Sakkari and her coach's strategy meeting before each tournament

Wow, just tuned in to watch a little bit of Sakkari's match. Almost looked like she's just getting back to tour after a long time away. Overhitting shots by a mile, etc. A real off day for her. She's done. 4 and 4.

Mas sacks the Sak! Good win for Mas, first top 10 win of her career.
She's a bit of a late bloomer though. She needs to build her confidence because she's got game. :)

Masarova is jacked as **** no surprise. When Sakkari can’t completely outmuscle her opponent it’s a struggle for her these days

Interesting ... Masarova was born in Basel and represented Switzerland from 2013-2017, then switch to represent Spain from 2018- onward. FO Junior (2016). Up-and-coming late bloomer. Let's see.

Poor Fruity1! At the moment she is like trying to fight Challenger2 tank with a pea gun!
Danimal has taken some 14 points in a row.

We should get a British win this evening. Miazaghi might have never won a grand slam match before but she's up against someome ranked 1022 playing under a protected ranking: since coming back she's played 9 lost 9 and perhaps only in NY for the cheque.

Could you please explain what you meant when you said:
"Masarova is jacked as **** no surprise"

I don't understand that and I'm sure others don't as well.
jacked just means muscular, strong, physically imposing - which is also Sakkari's main source of strength at the moment

Collins is just too much power/speed for Linda. Overpowered for much of the match so far. A lot of tactics that normally works in the ITF tourney just doesn't work against many of the WTA players - such as the moonballing strategy. Danni had no problems with those balls and even hitting winners off them. Continuous pressure from Dani's power making Linda constantly on the defensive.

Dani leading 3-0. 5-0

Yeah I was just going to post about this. I tuned in just for a few games now.
Collins is currently a bad matchup for Fruity1.
As you say, just too much power.

Fruity1 has a pleasing, all-round game, but just lacks the power to keep up with an in-form Collins.
I suspect Giorgi would give Fruity1 similar problems now.

But I am holding out hope for Fruity1 because I like her game.
If she can somehow manage to increase her power (training/technique etc.)
she might be able to one day give trouble to these big-hitting babes.

Danimal-Fruity1 6-2, 6-0. That was even more brutal than expected. Danimal with surprisingly few UEs.
Linda just can't handle the most powerful players of WTA - has very poor record against them. She needs more power, harder second serve and maybe some improvement of her defensive skills as well.

If it just means muscular I'm OK with that.
But to be honest, if I look at these two women, and someone asks me to point out the muscular one,
I wouldn't say "Which one?" I'd point to Sak 10 times out of 10.

The interesting thing that I didn't know until during the post-match interview was that Collins lost to Linda just earlier this year in Dubai. What has changed? Dani gave a lot of credit to her coach - Jared Jacobs. Don't know since when.

Is it just me noticing, seems like Dani has toned down her on-court grunts, confrontations, etc - and just calmly play and more focused. When she's on, she's a very dangerous player to play against. Just have 2 speeds: hit hard and harder. Plays the same whether she's down or winning at 5-0.

Sloane will always be a favorite of mine, no matter what. Pure willpower gets her through that 2nd set vs. Haddad Maia. Really entertaining contest going on ESPN at the moment, great match.

I've too have noticed she's mellowing a bit with the histrionics. She has a go for broke style. I like her.

What happened to Kudermetova? She had an excellent year until recently...
What a strange view. She has been all over the place the whole year and the most inconsistent of the top 10(-20)players along with Kasatkina.

Kostyuk granted Rybakina a handshake after getting beaten by her!?? How come? Rybakina is a Russian so theoretically one of the people attacking her country, Sabalenka is not from a country that is attacking her country and has clearly pointed out that she is definitely not supporting that attack but she don't get her handshake?

Despite being Russian, Rybakina plays for Khazakhstan. Sabalenka plays for Belarus, which has not directly attacked Ukraine but aids Russia against Ukraine by allowing Russia to stage attacks from Belarussian soil. Anyway, Rybakina's 6-2, 6-1 win was nice although the match was a bit closer than the score indicated.

The match was of a very decent quality. Rybakina was not pressing, and her 1st serves were at a decent % so if she keeps the level up, she’s going to do well.

Yeah something is off. I saw the score while driving back.

Random thought I had...Players who are typically in slumps like this often can the coach, but I think she's married to her coach? Her game is good enough where she should get back on track eventually, but it was something I thought about.

Dang. 2 of my faves out. Kudermetova & Sakkari. Kudes not as surprising. She looked discombobulated last time I saw her on TV last week. Her serve, which used to be pretty good ...

With Kudermetova it might just be poor form, niggles, long season, whatever.

A bit different with Sakkari and Fruhvirtova. Both at different stages of their career but both have hit an absolute mental wall. Lot of thinking to do in the autumn.

Strycova/Vondrousova a very fun pairing in the doubles.

Vondrousova the Wimbledon champ in singles while Strycova was the doubles champ (along with Hsieh).
Kind of surprised Hsieh and Strycova aren't teaming up here since they won Wimbledon together and have a long history. Instead Hsieh's going with her Roland Garros-winning partner, Wang Xinyu. Hsieh/Wang are in Gauff/Pegula's quarter of the draw. Strycova/Vondrousova could meet Krejcikova/Siniakova in the second round.

(First set notes)
See that's the problem with players like Tomlj.
They so often just play with so low margins, often hitting the ball long.
They don't use their heads. :(

Well I tuned out for the second set and was pleasantly surprised to see she came back.

If she just makes slight adjustments to her game she should be able to beat Udvardy types in her sleep.

She needs to have more patience in her games.
Keep the rally going without trying to kill it. Then when the opportunity comes, go for it!

She's put on a couple of pounds which is way cool. :)

I hope she wins this match!

Funny/strange reaction from Toml after she won.
Disbelief!
She sat down, kept shaking her head (side to side) and asking her team: "How, how?"

Crazy. What is she playing for if she reacts like that after winning?
She should be expecting to win!

^^ Your hope came reality.

I don't understand that older Udvardy (that has a very kind of naughty first name in my language! :D ) , for once she was given the chance to win - usually she plays so poorly throughout the match that opponent doesn't have to do much to beat her. But even though I've read she is psychology student, she totally freezes in the big points?!?

Thanks for Udvardy trivia. :)
This was the first time I've watched her play.
Happy for Toml. :)

She'll likely get squashed like a bug though next round against Ryba.

^ You are welcome! :) She has a younger sister Luca(!??) that was somewhat a junior prodigy (great run in girls Wimby but not so great on other GSs) last year. And has now started pro career but playing in the two smallest ITF-categories so far.
I'm a kind of Ajla-hater/fan depending on many things and even days! Today maybe more of the former...

"Panna" in my language, Finnish, is a verb that means "to put" or "to lay" but also "to screw" & "to f*ck"! )
