Watch out for Saville (Gavrilova if you remember her) vs Iga. She has a way about her that I hate betting against, her power can be actually dominant at stretches and she competes hard. She won’t win but there’s a test in this match.

Swiatek needs to be in the mindset that it's a guaranteed 2 hour+ match. Saville's not the type you can just hammer off court quickly.

I think as long as Venus is a huge draw she is gonna get wildcards. Same as Andy and Stan. Us tennis fans love our washed up former champs. I am honestly curious if she could train herself into better shape or is this as good as it gets for now. She has that auto immune syndrome that probably is still tough to deal with.

I want to know what’s going on with Danielle Collins. Tennis dot com did a little profile on her and it sounds like she’s just playing when she wants, so I wonder if she’s on a slow exit. She is also someone with health issues.

Saville is getting very down on herself. All she does though is scamper around getting the ball back with agile defensive lunges. You need a bit more than that against the top players though. It would probably work against Danielle Collins.

Very unsatisfying/frustrating to watch Wang play at her current career state. :(
She has the talent but doesn't know how to use it!

Kalinskaya Cirstea is a good looking match. The tennis isn't bad either.

Edit: Cirstea takes it, Kalinskaya heading home.

Decent from Swiatek but certainly not frightening.

Absolutely wide open for me. Could be any one of Swiatek / Sabalenka / Rybakina / Pegula / Gauff. Those five - tight as a duck's arse right now. No clear favourite.

Muchova, Bencic, Azarenka, Vondrousova possible dark horses.

Andy and Stan at 39 and 43 at this point don't need them - unless they decide to play tournaments after the cut-off entry date. But yeah, if they were to be ranked 100+, then I can see it. I'm not super anti-WC for Venus. They're truly "wildcards" and they don't have to go to an up and comer or a local player. I simply don't think it's the best use of a WC when she can barely move. For smaller tournaments who are trying to attract crowds, I get it. But the USO WC could have gone to someone with a fighting chance. Again, I'm not irate that she got one, but it was such a blase performance.

What did Saville do well to get seven games off Iga? Given Iga's ability to run through people, that's impressive in a second round match.

Saville was speedy Gonzales. Felt like every point was just Swiatek running her from one corner to the other but somehow Saville scrambled everything back and a few times Swiatek missed a few weird ones stood well inside the baseline.

Yeah, Andy and Stan are still quite competitive, so it's not a great comparison. That said, as I mentioned earlier, if you watched Venus during the grass court season she certainly looked like she could still play a match or two at this level, and a WC didn't seem crazy.

Also, at the US Open, she will always create a buzz and sell a lot of tickets. Not that ticket sales are ever lacking, but she brings in those non-tennis people that make the USO an "event" in NY... which is actually really annoying for the real tennis fans around here.

For the 5th straight slam, Pegula for some reason has entered all 3 disciplines at the slams. She has entered the mixed doubles partnering with Krajicek as the top seeds.

The duo were the top seeds at Wimbledon but withdrew prior to the tournament.
They were the top seeds at the French Open but lost 1R.
They were the 2nd seeds at the Aus Open but lost 1R
They were the 5th seeds at the US Open last year but lost 2R.

I really don't know why she does it and risks burning herself out. For someone who is the top seed in ladies doubles, top seed in mixed doubles and 3rd seed in singles, she's never won any slam yet.
How do the rankings work that she’s still a top seed in mixed? I cant imagine she plays 3 disciplines all year round, including the smaller tournaments.

now Vika goes down not feeling well................ to zhu lin ? who is that ? for real ? is there virus on the rise ???? we must test everyone

Iga is not good this year.
compared to Iga of 2022 - maybe true. Compared to the rest of the players - she is still pretty good. As in - second in the WTA Race, with a very, very healthy lead over the 3rd player.

Plus Iga has:
The most wins in 2023
the best winning % in 2023
and that by playing the most matches.

so still pretty good.

oh, I see what you mean. She did not win by 6:0 or 6:1 score. Yap, she is done then

Mixed doubles ranking goes by the male and female players respective doubles ranking. So she's the #2 women's doubles player in the world and she partners with Krajicek who is the #1 in men's doubles so that makes them the top seeds with a "total ranking" of #3. The best possible being a ranking of #2.

Even though she's ranked #2, if she partnered with some guy ranked outside the top 150, she wouldn't be seeded as their total "ranking" would then be #152. Kinda like how Gauff is unseeded in the mixed because she's playing with Sock.

Really enjoy watching Jen Brady. She has great strokes and really hits out on the ball. Plus you gotta like a chick who wears Flex Seal on her shirt.

Really nice to have Jen Brady back - which is a little odd to say because it's not like she had an enormously long phase at the top or I had watched a ton of Jen Brady matches before she was injured. I mainly know her from her AO run and a few other matches I caught, but that's it. Still, it's great to have her and her free swinging game back. Maximum use of poly. Lol. She reminds me of a right-handed Patty Schnyder - if you remember her from the 90s/2000s.

Jenn is great. Before she went out to her injuries, which was before the surge of IS, AS, ER, she possessed the most potent FH at that time. NO was reigning Queen then, but Jenn’s FB was superior. And who can forget the Osaka’s speech where she asked Jen her name…. Jenn actually rolled her eyes as NO spoke.

Happy she’s back. Hope she can stay healthy.

Not a hater. I like Linette. Like her to win this match v Brady. Question. How can s/b #24 in the world w/ a 2023 record coming into Open of 20-17?

She made the Aus Open SF this year which gives a whole heaps of points (780).

I'd dare guess that Garcia probably would be similar with her win/loss record this year and she was a top 10 seed.

Jen Brady gets past Linette in 3.

I know I say it a lot, but damn what could have been 2 years ago at this tournament. Brady was the 11th seed, Aus Open finalist and USO SFist the previous year and had an easy 1R against a qualifier named..... Raducanu.

Jen withdraws from the tournament replaced by a lucky loser and the rest is history.

Wozniacki does look good in that bodysuit, but honestly Andreescu looked 10x better wearing it in Miami.

Jenn is great. Before she went out to her injuries...

I like Brady too, but I didn't like the way she ditched that coach who essentially turned her career around.

Is there anyone else here who views 'Penko as I do?
To me she is truly unique on the WTA tour.

First you've got the obvious:
The 'chubbiness', the disbelief whenever she loses a point she thought she should have won, her frequent complaints etc..
You've got her amazing game with great serving, powerful ground strokes, excellent touch, tremendous overall confidence.
A certain 'je ne sais quoi' charisma.

When you put the whole package together you seem to get a "sum is greater than the parts" player.
I don't see this with any other WTA player. :)

To me she's just very different.

U and me
I'm a huge fan
Seen her a lot at IW last few years
1. lot less chubby and cuter than she appears on tv
2. she's not really complaining, just venting after misses
3. Hits a super clean ball
4. the neck tilt open mouth thing on the serve is must see stuff

She's got spunk. Her matches are always enjoyable. She gives 110%. I'm a fan.

Is there a WTA rule that mothers who are trying to make a comeback on the tour must wear skin-tight catsuits? Just curious. At last Wozniacki wears it a lot better than Serena.
