Is there a WTA rule that mothers who are trying to make a comeback on the tour must wear skin-tight catsuits? Just curious. At last Wozniacki wears it a lot better than Serena.
They are wrestling tights.

That Ostapenko-Avanesyan match was crazy. Ostapenko had a 6-3, 5-2 lead then lost 5 games in a row to lose the second set 5-7. She took a 5-2 lead again in the third, got 2 match points, and Avanesyan came back again to tie it up 5-5 before Ostapenko broke again to win it 7-5. Ostapenko won it despite 80 unforced errors.

Wozniacki really should be proud of herself. I don’t even care about the result, to work yourself back to this level of physical fitness and sharpness on court after giving birth is quite impressive. A lot more athletes are doing it these days and I know Court and others have done so, but it’s still incredibly difficult.

Absolutely.

Both her and Svitolina had the babies in October last year. Can't help but wonder if Woz saw how well Svitolina returned in May (won a title and made the French Open QF) and got inspired to come out of retirement. Mind you Wozniacki has had 2 kids since she left the sport in 2020.

What's funny is that Wozniacki is actually younger than Kvitova! Both born in 1990 but Petra a couple months older.

Sweet Caroline!

Let's go :D

Was always sad that she was one of the very few players I never got to watch live in person, but hopefully the Aussie summer next year I will get my chance!

Woz made it all the way to the final here in 2009 as the #9 seed but lost the slam to a new mum who had just come out of retirement and needed a wildcard to play the tournament - Kim Clijsters.

Here Woz is, 14 years later, new mum, just come out of retirement, needing a wildcard to play the tournament, looking to do the same? ;)

Her backhand looked disgusting fr

Tomljanovic withdraws and Rybakina moves into the 3rd round.
Players returning on a protected ranking with their first event back being a major is always risky. I'm not sure walkovers are actually good for Rybakina's rhythm.

Just watched the replay of Gauff vs Andreeva. The Gauff mixture of high IQ tennis with all-out aggression is going to be very, very hard to stop.

Andreeva likes to hit the BH inside out anyway, and probably thought (quite rightly) that it’s safer to go to Coco’s forehand. In response Gauff was cheating to that forehand side all day and teeing off on winners or hooking Andreeva off court with percentage cross court forehands.

You have to feel for Andreeva. I haven’t seen her play that much, but she really looked her age in that match, when normally she seems insanely solid and mature for a junior.

What’s the most effective way to go into Gauff’s backhand? It seems like you have to either go hard and get her to take a hand off the racquet stretching or avoid it altogether. Very hard to hit into that area and get anything even slightly neutral or favourable now.

In short: Ostapenko…

Is there anyone else here who views 'Penko as I do?

First you've got the obvious:
The 'chubbiness', the disbelief whenever she loses a point she thought she should have won, her frequent complaints etc..
You've got her amazing game with great serving, powerful ground strokes, excellent touch, tremendous overall confidence.
A certain 'je ne sais quoi' charisma.
When I first took notice of Ostapenko, I really liked her. If I'm being honest, it was mostly for her looks (I thinks she's super attractive), but her personality was fun as well.

Then, while she was really struggling, she started to turn me off. Personality is fine, but it was getting ridiculous with the complaining about line calls when she was obviously wrong. No other player behaves this way on either tour, save for Raducanu to some extent (when she actually plays).

Lately, though, I'm coming back around. The fun side of her personality is starting to come through again. As for your list, I wouldn't call her "chubby." She has a certain body type, and it's actually pretty amazing and hot when it isn't being covered with the awful clothes she picks out. And while her serve can be powerful, I wouldn't call it "great," since it isn't very consistent, nor would I say she has a particularly "excellent" touch, just pretty good (likely because she plays a lot of doubles).

Yes, much better than Serena (and Townsend), but still not at the level of Andreescu. No, Bianca didn't have a kid, but she wore that outfit and it was insanely good on her.

Kvitova is beyond boring. What a snooze fest .
Honestly, this match was beyond boring. Zero excitement or enthusiasm being generated. Another terrible show for the night session. And to think Kvitova was complaining about the general crowd noise... Maybe if the match was a little more interesting, people might have tried to pay attention.

High IQ tennis? Did you miss all of those random, tepid forehand slices that Gauff was throwing in? And no, they weren't tactical. They were 'too tired to get into position to hit a proper forehand,' or 'not confident to hit a proper forehand right now' shots. Plus, as I said about Alcaraz, hitting at drop shot when your opponent is really far behind the baseline or off-court isn't exactly some super genius, high IQ move. It's pretty simple and obvious.

As for Andreeva, she seems mature when things are going well and she is winning (and in her interviews), but as soon as the going gets tough and she falls behind, she looks very much like a junior player that needs to mature. A lot...

I'm not sure walkovers are actually good for Rybakina's rhythm.

Funnily enough I saw it the other way when I noticed the result. Rybakina has been the most niggly of the top contenders recently. She might not be up to 7 matches at the moment. Also, Tomljanovic is one of those players that can take anyone to three really tough sets even if she loses. I'd be happy enough to skip that one.

I know you weren't being serious, but Woz is no Clijsters. Woz is nowhere near the level of Swiatek or Sabalenka at the moment and has no chance to win it all.

Get in, Katie! What a win. She's having such a great year.

Top 50 debut after this tournament.
A second 3R at a major in a row. She will want to make this her first 4R. If she does, I'd have expected that to come at Wimbledon but this would be a nice surprise. Next up she has a home player in Stearns... Not sure who I fancy for that one as Stearns' momentum was cut short earlier this year with the parasite she acquired.

Sabalenka up 4-2 over Burrage right now but who knows if this will be straight sets or a three setter because my confidence in Sabalenka performing has fallen right off since Australia. She's had plenty of wins but seems to have reverted back to a more beatable version of herself again. Then again, this is the first hard court major since her AO win, so I certainly won't be writing her off.

No argument here. More women players should wear those.
I'm guessing wta players playing in those tights along with all the inner layers in the heat and humidity must be tough to play in. Add in a day time match in the sun and it's likely worse. At least their usual outfits, even though the layers are still there, have some venting and airflow. Yeah sounds tough in the heat regardless.

Kvitova continues to just show up, expecting her long deflated game to produce different results. Oh, well--it was good to see Wozniacki send Kvitova out of the USO.

No.
Kvitova didn't have the rally tolerance for wozs defense. She's either on with her game and has the match on her racquet, or as we see recently, hitting ufes and losing.

It's another great opportunity - for both of them. They're provisionally 49 and 50 on the computer. Stearns is playing at home of course. Tough to call.
