WTA H2H: 3-2 for Gauff

This is the second participation in the Grand Slam finals for both female tennis players, Coco lost her first final at RG 2021 against Swiatek, while Aryna succeeded in this year's AO final against Rybakina.

Going with Aryna in two rather close sets. Coco is playing really well but if I am being honest I was massively disappointed by both Ostapenko and Muchova against her, with their offensive play they should have caused more trouble to Coco than grandma Wozniacki and Mertens. I expect something much better from Sabalenka.

As always in women's tennis, any bizarre thing can happen but..... Sabalenka will fight thru the crowd and win in 3. Coco was gifted this final by Muchova so this will be a fight.

This will go 3 up and down sets. Periods of great shot making followed by periods of choking, by both players. Coco will start out a wall of defense, waiting for Sabalenka to spray errors. Will become more aggressive as needed. I'll take Coco in 3.

A toss up; both are capable of winning, and losing; and I mean losing, not getting beat. Head to head ball bashing, I give Sabalenka the edge, CoCo using variety to keep her out of rhythm gives her the edge. Both only had to best a 13 seed and a 10 seed to get to the final.

If Sabalenka wasn't so mentally fragile at times she could really dominate ladies game as she has all the weapons to do so. However, at times she suddenly and inexplicably just loses the plot completely.

This is why i admire likes of Evert, Navratilova, Graf, S Williams so much, because it takes real mental fortitude to keep winning over and over again year in and out

I want Coco to win, but I feel Aryna will take it in the end. Everything is going in her favor these past two weeks.
I love Saba and want her to win, but she did just about everything she could to lose last night.

She was spraying errors left and right with one dimensional smash tennis.

I hope she plays a lot better or I don’t think she’s going to win.

I picked Coco to win this tourney. She's on fire with Brad Gilbert as her coach. Even though Sabalenka is slightly favored, I'm sticking with Gauff.

The last I checked, Gauff was +110 and Sabalenka was -130. Those are fairly even odds. This is in stark contrast to Djoker vs Shelton, where Shelton is +800 and Djoker is -1600.

Honest question - does Sabalenka have anything in her game but serving and baseline power right now?

Like - does she have any net or volley game to speak ? She had some decent slice stuff last night, but otherwise her drop shot/lob/volley and even overhead game last night looked pretty awful.

Aryna and Elena are my faves of the ladies, but Saba’s game seems vulnerable to anyone solid who has all court tools.

Seems like Gauff is doing a bit better right now in that regard.

I can imagine this going the distance, with Sabalenka either becoming too mentally tight & error-prone to lose the first set, or it happens in the second, but the third will see her playing dominating, lights out tennis to win the title.

I've changed my mind twice already as to who will win. That's how tight it is.

I can't think of a tighter final ever tbh. Try and think of one. It's hard.

I’m with you 100% Dòm. Can’t believe Osty and my Muchova. Saby showed guts s last night. Saby in 3

Agree to all, but I see Aryna in 3.

Coco winning would be the highlight of the entire event for me. Not a Sabalenka fan. If she wins uhg.
And the men’s final doesn’t excite because although I like Novak I’d like to see him pushed. Carlos would have been incredible.
And then now all we have is Danil .. and I’m sorry. I know he can beat Novak. But I don’t care if he does. He’s probably my least favorite ATP player. So good for both of them.

The story coming out of this with Coco winning would be a true delight.

My heart wants Coco to win, getting her first slam win here would be an awesome stepping stone to a potentially great career but this is a huge ask, Sabalenka has looked in mighty good form and my head thinks she'll take it in 3.

Final just doesn’t work for my time zone so I will probably miss it :( but I am cheering for Sabalenka to take out her 2nd slam for her career and the year.

But I won’t be upset if it’s the wonderful Gauff who prevails!

Hopefully I can see part of it, but I’m here with you all in spirit!

Apparently there could be some rain today. If the roof is closed I think it will advantage Sabalenka's serve.

Gauff doesn't have a bad serve herself!

After initially tipping Sabalenka, I've swung towards Gauff today. This run to the final just has a feeling of destiny about it - not dissimilar to Raducanu a couple of years ago.

I keep looking at the h2h too. With the exception of the most recent encounter, Gauff plays Sabalenka very well.

But....ahhhh I dunno. It's difficult. I'm certainly not betting on this one. At least not from the start. I might have a punt on whoever loses the first set. This is definitely not a match dependant on who wins the first set. Both could come from behind in theory.

Sabs in straights.
Coco will be ‘only 19’ afterwards.

The post mortem from the commentators will be annoying as hell, regardless of whether you wanted her to win or not..

(Take a sip for each one you hear)

"We have to remember, she's still only 19"

"She might not have won, but the crowd have certainly fallen in love with her this fortnight. Listen to those cheers!"

"It's not a matter of if Coco wins a major, but when" (this one probably from Evett)

"It might not be the trophy she wanted, but she'll surely get the other one too one day".

"They wanted a hero to follow after Serena, and now they've got one".

"Possibly the long gruelling summer has finally caught up to her. She's a won a lot of matches on these American hard courts. I definitely feel fatigue has been a factor tonight".

"What a loser's speech! Such a mature head on young shoulders".

"Just doesn't seem to have been able to play with as much freedom tonight"

"She won more games than she did in her first major final. That's a big positive to take away".

"Anybody but Sabalenka in such scintillating form, and you have to think it would have been Gauff's night".

"Lots of great players have started off by losing multiple major finals and then gone on to win loads. Lendle for instance".

I feel it will go the distance. My heart is with Coco but my head is undecided, LOL. I also believe Coco has a much better all around game. She is not as prone to high numbers of errors the way Aryna is. I also feel that Aryna is very suspect mentally. In her match against Maddy she literally threw her racquet at her coach! (was also shocked that Maddy lost). So, it's obvious the crowd will be cheering on Coco and that might get on Aryna's nerves. Coco is also a much better player mentally than Maddy who's always had issues with nerves.
