People have said the same about Djokovic and Nadal. But the thing is, great defense is as important as great offense. If you can do both, you are going to be an ATG.

Gauff adjusted to Sabalenka incredibly well. Sabalenka did not. The better player won.

Those guys play offense though. Come on man. I believe Gauff just had 11 winners.

I am just anti-this crowd. Whoever this crowd is for, I’m against. No offense, Coco. Congrats.
So, are you saying you would support Med if the crowd supports Djokovic tomorrow?
yeah-excellent.gif

No, those guys play offense when it suits the situation. Djokovic and Nadal have played entire matches just pushing the ball and retrieving. They do what works. They find solutions. That's what Gauff did today. Sabalenka should have stopped trying to hit through Gauff at the start of the third set. She should have adjusted.

Gauff can play offense VERY well. You know this. She completely blew Ostapenko off the court.

Hard to think that Coco will struggle with that, given that she's been labeled as the next great American since coming on tour at 15. I'm just glad she managed to live up to some of the hype. It seems like it took her forever to get there - funny that she's just 19. Here's to hoping for more.

Can she win though on this type of style. I don’t see much offense. It seems like she pushes the ball. Would be nice to see her smack the ball around but doesn’t seem like her style.

Well, she didn't play like this is the obvious answer to that question. She was incredible against Keys in the second and particularly third sets. If you think Maddy ****ing Keys should have been here you must not have watched her attempt at a US Open final.

Watching Sabalenka against Madi, she was horrible. Especially that first set. She simply got out choked by Keys.

Let's complete the sweep Novak!
If Gauff gives her WWE intro for Novak onto the court tomorrow, he wins for sure!
An epic meltdown but there have been loads of one sided slam finals.

Anyone who has been watching tennis for a while and doesn't have an agenda should recognize that.

This match doesn't belong anywhere near that list
Yeah, Natasha Zvereva's 0-6, 0-6 loss in the 1988 French come to mind.

Seems like a cheap publicity stunt for the USTA to announce a matching 3 mill to refurbish legacy courts so that kids of different backgrounds can play tennis. So if coco lost they wouldn’t have done it?

And the announcer saying thank you Coco for that. The whole thing felt cringey. Even Coco looked like she was not sure what to say or do.

Dude some of those UEs where on sabs. Going for too much. It’s called UEs. Unforced!!!!!
She was going for too much because her usual power didn’t faze Coco and because Sab was not getting cream puff balls back that she could destroy.

That’s why I said just talking about UE and not why they happened are missing the point.

It is hard to know how much of that was a meltdown, and how much was just being badly overmatched. Probably a combination of both. It was one of those rare final matches you probably predicted someone to win a quite low number of games going in, even though definitely not a double bagel prediction.

It is hard to compare that to matches you have a player you think has a good chance to win going in.

It reminds me of an interview I saw where Djokovic said one of the players (outside of Nadal) that he hated playing the most was -- Gilles Simon. Of all people. Same reasons. The man gets to every ball. It didn't matter what you did. Offensive. Defensive. Flat. Loopy. He said that even your best tennis is only 50% chance to win the point. 40 ball rallies.

He said that even though he always felt confident he would win the match... there was going to be no easy points. You have to hit 10 winners on every point and you cannot make mistakes.

Again a lot of those UEs where on her. She wasn’t patient. So one dimensional. Curious to see how many slams Gauff can win by playing like this.

Hmm, when your opponent is making you win every point four times, you're going to start racking up the errors if you have no plan other than to blow her off the court.
Yeah I only saw the third set but in that one at least Sabalenka was mostly missing after reasonably extended rallies. She wasn’t missing every easy third ball forehand or something like that. And Gauff did a great job not just returning Aryna’s bombs but varying up the shape and placement of the ball she was hitting, forcing Sabalenka to hit the ball uncomfortably high or uncomfortably far inside the court, or what-have-you.

Not a sexy style and pretty boring. I don’t think Gauff can change her game. I think this is her. Curious to see how many slams she could win like this.

So does Gauff when she's not playing someone bashing every shot.

And she didn't just retrieve or she'd not have won all those points. Not how it works, sorry.

Dude she won more than her total points on sabalenka’s UEs!!! More than half. Plz. Go looo at her other matches well. That’s how she got to this point.

This reminds after Portugal won the euros some years back. A bunch of people saying she not win the match even if she wins the match. Whatever that means.

Of course. Just a bunch of clowns going on about unforced errors with no idea how and why those errors actually happened.

The person who hit the hardest line drive should always win in their minds.

She won her match but not with style but style doesn’t matter. Kudos to her even though I hate retrievers.

Not really but don’t depend on more than half of your points on the other player making an UE lol. I think sabalenka is so one dimensional she didn’t have a plan b

Ostapenko was garbage dude lol
This is what I am saying. It is not about Coco’s playing style. You are trying your best to not give her credit for whatever reason. You did this after Cincy. You thought it was a flash in the pan and felt you would be proven right at the USO. However now that she won here as well you are just throwing sht on the wall to see what will stick.

Let it go. She is a solid player. You don’t have to be a fan of that style to nitpick to not give her all the credit in the world. Continuing to do that unfortunately will come across as some sort of an agenda.

We can all cheer for the players we want to without trying to shortchange others when they win.
