Right. I didn’t elaborate - Djokovic made it personal by mocking the celebration. Was there bad blood in the match before that?
Not as far as I could tell. Between Novak and the crowd, sure. Shelton was just doing his thing.

Came to my mind when that fat clown told Troicki during qualifiers that this is New York not Serbia. And then you see NYC with all its imbeciles showing their umatched first-serve-misses-clapping skills and the local kid whose ego got too big too soon.

But remember, Djokovic is a vile human being for putting them all in their place. You just can't comprehend TTWian minds lol.

Double-double of hard court Slam finals. Now bring on the 90s gen king or 00s gen king. The stunning geriatric has more missions to accomplish.

Why do you think that is?

Is it how arrogant Ben comes Shelton?

Novak never seems to disrespect opponents intentionally so I would think he wouldn’t take to then “phone hang up” or muscle flex during match play stuff?

I’m curious.
He was eyeballing Djoker, perhaps trying to intimidate the guy. This was inevitable

If Novak was doing those celebrations and someone did it back to him you’d have no problem.
One guy is a supposed mature champion, the other one is a kid who didn't need to be humbled more, the loss was enough.
Shelton deserved it. He's made one semi in his whole career and tried to act bad around a dude with 23 slams. Grow up and win something before you strut. I thought Djokovic was hilarious, one of his better moments.
Sometimes you sound like a 13yo.

Pathetically low level commentary even for TTW.

Although Shelton is straight too as I understand it (apparently in a relationship with Anna Hall - an up and coming heptathlete / World Championship silver medallist), he must be referring to something else here.

I don't think he was a villain, you could feel the genuine offense oozing out of him as he did it.

Lmao. Literally no one cheering for Djokovic the Clown
You're not everyone. But it must be really, really hard to root against Djokovic as hard as you do when he's reached the final of 9 of the last 10 majors he's played and won 6 of them with a possible 7 coming.

What’s the point? Novak puts an arrogant kid in his place but he’s the bad guy? This would be a literal nothingburger if this was the NBA. @Kralingen can confirm.

Keep on missing the point along with the rest of the Djokovic fans who think it's just fabulous and then wonder why a guy who should be drowning in adulation is barely tolerated by huge numbers of tennis fans.

Superb from Nole to do the pxxx take of Shelton's phone gesture. You can bet your bottom dollar that everyone moaning a out it on here would have thought it hilarious if Dani had done it, or if situation was reversed they would say, Novak needs to suck it up and not be so sensitive
Just haters being haters, nothing new and of course, the double standard is again on prominent display.

It's perfectly OK for an upstart (who has won nothing in his career) to do the hang up gesture on Tiafoe, but when a 23-time slam champion does it to a nobody, people get their undies in a twist. Maybe Shelton will learn to never do that stupid move again when he beats an opponent. Novak schooled him on court and also schooled him with the phone gesture.

Being honest, mocking the celebration was the most entertaining thing he did in the whole match, he tries to make up for his boring gamestyle going raw with his personality, but he lacks the needed charisma and usually he just ends up looking like an idiot

He's arrogant as hell. You can see where he gets that cocky disposition. His dad.

I don’t like smack talk taunting culture, so part of me was glad Novak did it.

But I hope it doesn’t just perseverate the behavior.

I don’t know.

I agree Rafa and Fed would never do that. They’d say something later like “yeah - not my style”. And make a face like “it’s lame”.

But maybe Shelton needs a big rebuff from someone of Novak’s stature.

Cause yeah - I hate that stuff.

Not that I like the shirt tear & rage scream either - but even that seems less like a taunt.

Can a non-fanboy give any insight on that mock celebration?
Don't root for any of the big 3. I think Nole very often talks about respect, and while Ben didn't do much in this match to be disrespectful, I guess Nole didn't really like seeing Ben do it in the previous rounds. It's a good response for me, if Ben doesn't find his own celebration disrespectful he has nothing to be upset about, if he does well, maybe its time for some introspection.

Both competitors in this match straddle the very likeable/very unlikable fence.
The difference being that one has the clout of being one of the best players of all time while the other hasn't done jack squat, one of them earned the right to be arrogant. Plus Shelton just seems like a brat in general. There's a way to be flamboyant like Tiafoe for example without coming across as a complete tool which this kid does but he's young so maybe he'll learn.

Hey, this kid Shelton was extremely disrespectful of Tiafoe... one does not make such gestures of celebration. Tipical cocky 20yo.
This was Nole's way of putting the little brat back in his place. 23-0 kind of score. Those that complain that Nole was bad to Ben, are those that let their kids ruin every body's day by doing whatever they want.

You never liked him anyway, so anything he does this just confirms your bias. Whatever.
Kid got put in his place for his arrogance.

I don't like his attitude precisely because of things like this. I always spoke well of his game dating way back to when I joined in 2010.

Keep on missing the point. People, a surprisingly large number of people given how good he is, don't like his attitude.

Apparently it's just a big mystery to Djokovic fans.

He doesn't come across as a complete tool because he's too young and immature.

That handshake was Nole's way of reminding young Ben who still the King. And when you come after the King, you better not miss. lol

You know how Djokovic is. Lol. Hard to hide what he's feeling.

Not saying you have to like it, but Ben was being arrogant the whole tournament. Kid needed a little humbling. He’s all bark and no bite.

I totally agree. I'm not even a Novak fan, but all these things are so inconsequential - Shelton's gestures, Novak's gestures. Who cares They're not killing anyone. It's sports. Shelton is not going to be scarred by Novak's "revenge" gesture.

That's some sheer nonsense. No one campaigned for Shelton to do it to Tiafoe but he's a green 20 year old kid who hadn't even won 2 matches in a row all year.

I don't expect mature champions to feel the need to mock some kid's silly celebration and go 'in your face'

It's precisely that attitude that your own hero would look down on even more harshly from a peer like Novak.
