I couldn't find a thread about this - unless there is one and it's someone on ignore who started it. So here is one for this tournament that is happening this week.

Today's round of 32 matches:

Ruusuvuori vs Purcell

Djere vs Diaz Acosta

Fils vs Nakashima

Michelsen vs Ofner

Draper vs Griekspoor

Juan Cerundolo vs Hanfmann

Koepfer s Kirshceimer

Bonzi vs Korda

Lehecka vs Kreuger

Vukic vs Van Assche

Kumar vs van de Zandschulp

Coric vs Hikikata

Mmoh vs Giron

This tournament is a respite from the drama at the top of the rankings. These players are fun to watch and I enjoy these less stressful tournaments. Draper vs Griekspoor is the match of the day for me, I am rooting for Tallon. While Carlos gets ready for the U.S. Open this tournament allows me to enjoy some tennis without all of the stress.

Today's round of 32 matches:

Ruusuvuori vs Purcell

Koepfer s Kirshceimer

Bonzi vs Korda
It's Kirchheimer. I know only because he played for Northwestern University. I believe this is his first ever ATP level match even though he has been playing for like 10 years now. Which is sort of funny how things work: he lost in qualifying rounds, got in as a lucky loser replacing a seeded player so he is in the second round already. Does he get ATP points for advancing past first round?

This Fils-Nakashima match has been a good one. They are in a second set tiebreak - Fils won the first tiebreak 7-5. They are tied at 2-2 in the 2nd set tiebreak...

The story of the week is Omni Kumar - yeah that's right, Omni ***** Kumar: a tiny 5-foot-nothing futures player, ranked around 400 at the start of the week, who got in at the last second as a Lucky Loser, then proceeded to take out Rinderknech and Van de Zandschulp in straight sets to book a spot in Round 3. He must have a knack for players with unpronounceable last names...

A little Asian guy full of piercings and tattoos, Omni doesn't look like your average pro tennis player. But when you see him play... he looks even less like your average pro tennis player: loopy lefty forehands, an indescribable 1-and-a-half-hand backhand that's somewhere in between Borg and Santoro's forehand, tons of slices, weird angles, and a sneaky serve that is truly remarkable for someone who's barely taller than the net.

I got my first glimpse of him months ago on Winston Du's Youtube channel, and have been keeping an eye on his results since: a few deep runs in 15K futures in Tunisia, then surprisingly qualified for Los Cabos, but nothing that seemed to foreshadow this incredible run. Gets Cerundolo junior next...

Fucsovics vs Korda

Griekspoor vs Purcell

Baez vs Vukic

Gasquet vs Nakashima

Coric vs Mmoh

Rooting for Fucsovics, Griekspoor, Baez, Coric, Lehecka, J Cerundolo... the other two matches are toss-ups for me...

I thought I saw Kumar somewhere before and was thinking it was that Winston Du episode but was too lazy to go dig it up. Super cool to see him play on the tour and taking out very good players. Thanks for linking the video.

I am watching Korda vs Fucsovics - Korda won the first set in a close tiebreak 7-5; they are on serve in the second set. I am rooting for Fucsovics but Korda will probaby win...

LOL michael Moh,,, he was losing to Tristan Boyer just last week in SF challenger and now he's taking one of the world class player Coric to 3rd set.. Inconsistency of thsi dude is just something else..... :-D :-D

Two of the four quarterfinals have been decided: Gasquet vs Korda and Lehecka vs Purcell.

J Cerundolo will probably play Coric, who is leading in his match with Mmoh; Baez is through and will play the winner of the Djere vs Michelsen match.

Max Purcell is having a fantastic run of late and just an overall great 2023.

In Canada he qualified for the main draw and got a huge top 15 win over Felix before losing in a long 3 setter to Murray.
He backed that up by qualifying in Cincy and then beating Harris, got his first top 10 win by beating Ruud, then beat Wawrinka before pushing #1 Alcaraz to 3 sets.

Now in Winston-Salem he's into the QF with wins over Cecchinato, Kuznetsov and #2 seed and world #25 Griekspoor, Now faces #5 Lehecka.

He started the year ranked #204, he's now up to #43 in the live rankings.

Djere defeated Michelsen and will play Baez today.

I am rooting for Gasquet, Lehecka, Baez and then it's a toss-up for me as I really like the younger Cerundolo and Coric! :)

Disappointed that Korda won the third set decider tiebreak 8-6 ): I really thought Gasquet was going to win that tiebreak...

Now I am watching Lehecka vs Purcell, which is headed for a tiebreak in the first set....

Coric is more jacked and physically imposing in person than Fucsovics. Seen them both very up close now. People think Fucs is the most jacked ATP player because of photos, and maybe he is a bit more suited for Mr. Olympia, a bit more cut, but he looks thin in person like a pro cyclist or runner.

Coric though looks big. broad shouldered and explosive. He still looks thin, every tennis player looks thinner in person than on camera, but he has crazy quads, you can see every sinew and vein in his arms.

Huge serve too.

Why did Korda withdraw? Lehecka is into the final as a result of Korda's withdrawal.

I love Baez! Baez vs Coric will be great, I love both of them! I also love Lehecka, so I will be very happy with the winner of this tournament! (:

He rolled his ankle and went down hard late in the match, but kept playing.
Perhaps if there was any swelling he just didn't want to play on it before the US Open.

I was so disappointed when Lehecka had 3 match points against Andy Murray (and even some more later) and couldn't convert any of them and Murray wound up winning - it was the tournament in which Murray made it to the final and lost easily to Medvedev earlier this year. I was rooting so hard for Lehecka I nearly burst a vocal chord!!!! (;

I would be very happy with Lehecka, Baez or Coric winning this tournament!!!!! (: (: (: (:

3 hours and 13 minutes - third set tiebreak - seemed like Baez would win this easily hours ago.... this could go either way, they said this is the second longest 3 set match of the year...
