Another WTA 1000 event.

All the players are back again, we are coming off an epic Indian Wells where Wimbledon champ Rybakina got her revenge from the Aus Open final by knocking off Sabalenka to win her maiden WTA 1000 title.

Seeded players are:
Swiatek, Sabalenka, Pegula, Jabeur, Garcia, Gauff, Sakkari, Kasatkina, Bencic, Rybakina, Kudermetova, Samsonova, Haddad Maia, Azarenka, Kvitova, Krejcikova, Pliskova, Alexandrova, Keys, Linette, Badosa, Vekic, Qinwen, Ostapenko, Trevisan, Shuai, Potapova, Kalinina, Martic, Collins, Bouzkova and Zhu.

Only 3 former champions in the draw:
Swiatek (2022)
Sloane (2018)

That's a shocker of a draw for Emma. Got to start signing up for some 250s and 500s after this.

Lots of potential repeats...

- Rybakina and Swiatek in the quarters
- Krejcikova and Sabalenka in the last 16
- Garcia and Cirstea in last 64
- Samsonova/Zheng potentially for about the 100th time

Probably some others I didn't even spot.

Just when I think I've seen it all, something new pops up.
The view on court right now for the Gracheva match is so high (far away) it looks like they
have the camera mounted on a helicopter. :)

mark Petchy (?) kind of tough on these gals (Fruhvirtova/Wang) saying not everyone is blessed with the fast twitch muscles to play tennis or something like that.

I voted for Belinda. I think she's due for a title this year before she fades away.

Embarrassing for Brenda Fruhvirtova (0-6 0-3 so far). Too soon for W1000.
Wang is no slouch!
I just watched part of the last game.
If it was any indication of Fruity2's ability I see a very bright future for her.
Very much in league with her older sister.
She came back to 5-6 in the 2nd and was a point away from a tie-break.
Excellent ball-striking.

To face Sakkari the next round !
But, but, but... she played so well for a handful of games against Swiatek. No easy draw for Emma means her fans can't pretend that beating Kovinic means something.

And Gauff with yet another friendly draw, going to face Marino.

Because Lindsay Davenport had any fast twitch muscle prowess? Strange comment...

Camila going with the Tennis Barbie look today, and pulling it off to perfection. She looks amazing, and she is playing great so far.

Yeah the other girl seemed gangly and was generally everywhere all at once (at least when I was watching). I don't think I've seen her before. Good to see Brenda make a late fight of it. Needs to get in the 250s.

Poor Claire Liu gets Swiatek in the last 64 of both Sunshine Double tournaments..

I'm probably late to the party but I've just discovered who has the longest................. delayed grunt in WTA: Mayar Sherif. Her ball is practically about the be hit by her opponent and then you hear Sherif's "AAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYEEEE" grunt.

Haley Baptiste's game is so interesting to me. It looks like she has such low intensity but I think maybe she just has big movements.

The feisty little Italian survives, just had to make it WAY more difficult first.
Camila came out firing and doing her thing, but to Kanepi's credit she managed to adjust and started hitting back with almost the same pace. I don't think it was a great matchup for Camila, but I'm glad she pulled through. Given her a little extra cash to spend while hanging out in Miami.

Agreed, but she seems to be constantly out of breath. Golubic doing the smart thing and serving fast.

In a first-round clash between two dangerous floaters at the Miami Open on Tuesday, Camila Giorgi held off Kaia Kanepi 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 7-6(4) in 3 hours and 32 minutes, tying for the longest WTA main-draw match of the 2023 season so far.

The length of that opening-round tussle matches the 3 hours and 32 minutes it took for Erika Andreeva to defeat Harriet Dart in the first round of the ATX Open in Austin last month.

It's a double shame that Siniakova had to retire while up a set.

She was due to face Swiatek in the 2R if she won. Swiatek is of course #1 in singles while Siniakova is #1 in doubles. Very rarely do we get the #1 player in doubles play the #1 in singles.

One of the last times (perhaps even the last time) the #1 doubles player faced the #1 singles player was Siniakova at the 2019 French Open against Osaka and Katerina actually won that 3R match. Would've been cool to see her play Iga. Ah well.

That's Xiyu Wang (the lefty), are you mistaking her with Xinyu Wang, the more consistent player? Xiyu Wang aka the lefty one is tall and powerful, but she is too erratic, a lot of times she can't find her range and hit the ball all over the place, watching her is more frustrating than fulfilling. Based on the scoreboard, she must have played really well yesterday. I believe she has recently hired Nigel Sears as her coach, hopefully Sears can help her, since she does have tons of potential and should have a much better result than her current state.

my favourite Wang. Love her lefty FH but yeah she hasn't yet found her consistency.

I don't follow the Wangs very closely, but what I saw of the match (briefly) this Wang was striking the ball very authoritatively.
Are they both tall? Because I saw more of an extended match with a tall Wang.

Always fun to watch a healthy Andreescu tee off, but the match itself has been incredibly boring.

Emma looks lost out there. Hopefully she has a better feel for the conditions by now and can reign in her groundstrokes a bit.
