G.O.A.T.
The draw is out. Time to get out your popcorn and enjoy the matches. :)
If you've chosen 'Other' please let us know who you think she will be.
I've just listed the top seeds.

This thread is open to both singles and doubles discussion.

I'm watching Canada's latest 'sensation', 18-yr. old Marina Stakusic.
At the very least she'll be able to tell her grand kids she took a set off Parks at the Montreal Open qualies in 2023.
At best she still may be able to pull off this upset. :)
She hits her return of serves low and Parks has been netting quite a few of them.

These two players have obviously gone to the same school of tennis..
The Silent Tennis Academy ™.
Absolutely NO sound from either one during play!
It's glorious. :)

The tennis firsts continue on rolling in for me.
I had never seen a TV/livestream tennis broadcast where they 'feature' the tennis fans (first six rows) in the viewing screen
until now. :(
The fans take up more than 1/4 of the viewing real estate, I kid you not!
Montreal qualies.
Here's a screenshot.

Poll has been extended until tomorrow afternoon.
However, I learned that in doing so, the existing votes get wiped.
So if you had already voted, please vote again. :)

Major story of this tournament is the comeback from retirement for Caroline Wozniacki.

3.5 years since her last match at the 2020 Australian Open. In that time she has welcomed two wonderful children. The second of which was born less than 10 months ago!

She has a winnable 1R opening against Aussie qualifier Kim Birrell.

The tournament has 6 former champs in it and it's not the top players. Halep the major omission as the defending champ from 2022 along with being the champ in 2018 and 2016.

2021 champ - Giorgi
2019 champ - Andreescu
2017 champ - Svitolina
2015 champ - Bencic
2012 champ - Kvitova
2010 champ - Wozniacki

Petra the only top 10 player to have won the title before.

Our 2 most recent champs in the draw Giorgi and Andreescu actually face eachother R1!

And Camila had to win a 3-setter in qualies today.

Dani’s final qualie scoreline over Bektas was rather nuts.

7-5, 6-7(12), 7-5

All that in only 2:26.

Vekic is really playing lousy at the moment. Just lost the 1st set tie-break.
She better get her act together quickly or she'll just have her doubles match to look forward to. :(

What a pathetic ending of the match for Keys!
Looking almost as old as Venus. :(
Needed what, 9 match points to finish it off?

Boulter rolled up Marino in her home country.

Noskova obviously isn't gonna make it back from Prague for her match tomorrow.

Boulter rolled up Marino in her home country.

I can't help wondering if this is her first win in the main draw of a W1000 but not sure. Now up to world number 58 after that win.

She's played Gauff once before and beaten her, albeit 2 and a half years ago. I don't remember it. Wasn't a very high profile tournament.

Nothing more exciting than watching Venus be SO happy and joyful out on the tennis court.
Yes she does put out those "so happy and grateful to be here now" vibes each time she takes to the court now. :(

Which got me thinking yesterday...
What's the deal, why is she sticking around?
I've come up with my own theory.
It has nothing to do with winning any more matches. She knows that and we all know that.

Did you know that Venus was the third highest-paid female athlete of 2021, according to Forbes?
She had:
On-The-Field Earnings: $0.3 million
Off-The-Field Earnings: $11 million

And she was the sixth highest-paid female athlete of 2022, according to Forbes.
She had:
On-The-Field Earnings: $0.1 million
Off-The-Field Earnings: $12 million

You read that right. Not just the 3rd and 6th highest paid tennis player, but all female athletes!
If she stops playing her endorsement earnings would take a big hit.

Another factor I believe is her aim to set the record for oldest playing pro tennis player.
We have Rosewall and McEnroe at 46 when they each retired.
And we have K. Date at 46 when she retired.
Venus is now 43, so be prepared to see her stick around for at least another three or four years. :(

I think Vee just likes to play tennis and likes the lifestyle, just like Andy Murray. If she can win a few matches here and there I bet she’ll stick around.

Potato makes a valiant effort at a comeback down 2-5 in the 1st set.
Took the lead briefly in the tiebreak at 2-1. But it was all in vain.
Losing the tiebreak 4-7. :(

Rybakina has to be one of the unluckiest top players in the women's game.
Every time I take a look to see who she's playing, especially in first rounds, it's almost always the in-form player of the moment or someone making a comeback and who's suddenly playing lights out tennis (Jennifer Brady).

Good looking match alert: Kostyuk v. Zheng :)

Edit: tennis wise not so much. Zheng serving for the first set at 5-2

Until usually signifies a change in English.
It continued to go just fine right until the final shot of the match! :)
Well done Woz on your first pro match in over three years!
I wasn't really making an effort there, I know. But Woz was. Looked pretty solid but I don't think she'll get past the next round.

What is up with the hitch on the toss ball arm (left arm) during the service motion by QZ. Just weird af. I’ve noticed it a while, and it keeps creeping me out.

Anybody who's been following the WTA recently should notice that the caliber of players in the draw,
especially after the first round, is exceptionally high!
It's getting to be difficult to pick a match to watch. :)

Did anybody catch that?
Members of the crowd started to shout mid-point "Uh-wayyyy......."
imitating Sherif's wails!

She wails predominantly after her shot has crossed the net.

I wish they would keep it up.
We all know imitation is the greatest form of flattery. :)

Top quality stuff from both players.
It's tough for me to pick a fave.
I'm just hoping the better player wins,
that's all.
(Bibi vs. GG)
GG up a break now, 4-2.
