2024-2025 NHL Season

Another season tis upon us in hockey land. And it’s been a fun one to start out with.

I wonder who wins the cup this year. I think the Rangers will do it this time. They’re kinda like Florida has been for the past few years, just too good to not eventually win one. Either them or Edmonton.

Any discussion for the season post down below!

For what has been a miserable last few years and a tragic off-season, things have been looking ok in CBJ land. 4-3-1 to kick off the season, statistically best first line in the league, finally goaltending starting to show up, and tonight they pumped Edmonton 6-1.

I hope we have a good season. Maybe sneak into the playoffs, who knows. But it’s been fun lately. All the pieces are there for us to be really good in a few years. #TrustTheProcess

Things are looking fun this year. Playoff races in both East and West are interesting.

Lots of mediocrity in the East, seems there’s at least one WC spot up for grabs. Ottawa is occupying it now but they could drop out once their results start slipping. Pittsburgh, Columbus, Philadelphia, and Montreal are the ones by my count who, if they could go on a winning run and push themselves past .500, could take away that spot. All of them are .500 but none of them can pull themselves more than a game or two above. Islanders and Rangers are both spiraling badly, they’re not fully out of it but trending in the wrong direction. Rangers disaster and Islanders probably gonna start a rebuild soon. Detroit and Buffalo are most likely out of it by now. Disasters for both who were supposed to take the next step this year. 14 years in Buffalo. When does it end?

Not as tight in the West, less teams fighting for the spot. Calgary beat Vancouver just now so they’ve overtaken them for the WC2 spot. Dallas in the WC1 spot is surprising, I expected more. But they also have games in hand. Along with Vancouver, St Louis is chasing them down. They’ve gotten better since hiring Montgomery, but still need to string together a big win streak. Utah has games in hand and is winning enough to stay relevant. Seattle and Anaheim are most likely too far away despite not fully being out of it. Nashville, Chicago, and San Jose are all nowhere near it. An absolute disaster for Nashville and kinda disappointing for Chicago who I’m sure was expecting a little better. San Jose is just happy to be playing NHL-level this year.

I’ve actually watched WAY less Stars this season because of the app. Always had Bally, so could watch them & whatever else was on at the same time. Now I only bother if there’s no other football.

They certainly haven’t been impressive, but last two are much better.

Honestly, it is hard to get through the season as an Oilers fan. Coming that close and knowing you have a long and unlikely road of reaching the cup again and actually winning it is daunting.

I just am ready for the playoffs, but I think the Oilers are actually not as good as last year and see a first or second round loss.

But I do like Celebrini and watching him in the west is fun. Will be much better than Bedard. Stars seem lost without Seguin and Vegas seems back at the top.

To be honest, I am just ready for some international play and am excited for the 4 nations cup. Canada gonna smoke everyone. Mcdavid to Crosby, back to Mackinnon, to Makar...

Not worried about the Stars yet. Think they know how to pace themselves. Regular season and seedlings means very little.
Stars are too good to not be contending. In the long run they should be fine. I trust them over most teams in the west in a playoff run. The tough cookies will be Vegas, Colorado and Edmonton. They’ll definitely beat Minny, Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver…

It’s definitely difficult to do it. Edmonton’s roster is still a bit incomplete imo. Goaltending is a big problem. It’s honestly shocking to me they got through to Game 7 of the SCF without a reliable goaltender.

Bally/FanDuel or whatever it is sucks. Utter nonsense. CBJ broadcast their game tonight OTA. Very thankful for that.

Yeah good goaltending would really nake the Oilers a contender. But that will never happen lol

Once LA plays their game tomorrow it will be official that every team is halfway through with their season.

The East is entertaining. Top 3 in each division is probably set. Toronto, Florida, and Tampa (iffy but they have games in hand). Washington, New Jersey, Carolina.

Everything else is completely up for grabs. WC1 is Boston with 47pts in 45GP. WC2 is Columbus with 46pts in 43GP. Boston got a muuuuuuuuch needed win last night vs Florida. Columbus on a 4 game win streak which is pushing them above the line.

Ottawa 45pts in 42GP is next. Then you have Detroit and Montreal 44pts in 42GP. Both are on pretty big runs to pull themselves back into the picture. Detroit is coming off a coaching change from Lalonde to McLellan which is definitely helping, 7 game win streak. Then Pittsburgh with 44pts in 45GP. They are slipping since the New Year. NY Rangers 42pts in 42GP… they have looked better in recent weeks, they’re trying to get themselves back in…. As are the NY Islanders with 41pts in 42GP, 3 game win streak. Philadelphia is desperately clinging on after a huge win vs Anaheim but… 41pts in 43GP, not impossible but going to be hard. Then Buffalo… lowly Buffalo. 37pts in 43GP. To their credit they look better lately but that 13 game losing streak pretty much ended their season. Not sure if they have a Detroit-style turnaround in them.

Not as cutthroat in the West because the good teams are actually good and occupy the playoff spots. Top 4 in Central is set. Winnipeg, Minnesota, Dallas, Colorado. Top 3 in Pacific is also set. Vegas, Edmonton, LA. Last WC spot probably coming down to either Vancouver (48pts in 42GP) or Calgary (47pts in 41GP). The rest…. Ehhhh. St. Louis is too inconsistent. 44pts in 44GP. Utah 43pts in 42GP also inconsistent but pretty young. Anaheim also young, 41pts in 43GP. Not mathematically impossible but they probably won’t make it. Seattle has been a disaster lately, 39pts in 44GP, that’s probably it. Nashville, San Jose, and Chicago have all been out for months now.

Not sure who makes it out of the East. I hope Columbus because I’d love to go to some playoff games this year. But the road record is a major problem as is the defense and goaltending. Boston in general may be running out of their magic. Lots of teams have games in hand on them. Detroit, Montreal, and Ottawa reaaaaaally wanna take the next step. Rangers need to get back in, that roster is designed to win divisions not fight for wildcard spots. Islanders prob need to as well to delay a 10 year rebuild. They have the worst prospect pool in the league so it’ll be a while before they’re good again. Philly is in the rebuild now but Torts prob doesn’t wanna miss again like last year. Buffalo is just pain.

Vancouver needs it more than Calgary in the West. They have issues with Pettey and JT Miller which seems to be inching towards a trade. Vancouver can’t let the window go, Calgary is just chilling. They were supposed to be bad this year. St. Louis and Seattle might be bothered about missing. Anaheim and Utah won’t care that much. Chicago might be upset they aren’t a little better this year, San Jose is just happy to be here. Nashville… well we’re past the point of anger and disappointment. Seasons over let’s hope next year we can try again.

The Capitals are my biggest surprise, and they could be dangerous in the playoffs if Ovechkin gets hot.

Best stories/Surprises are Caps, Jackets in East. In West I’d say Minny and maybe Calgary. All of them are overperforming their expectations. Washington was just supposed to be mediocre .500 for Ovi’s last few years to get him the record. They said nope we wanna win a cup.

There’s so many disappointments this year. Bruins, Sabres, Rangers, Islanders, Preds, Blackhawks, Kraken, Canucks… should all be doing better than what they are. Maybe even Dallas. Some like Islanders and Blackhawks aren’t that good anyways just playing below expectation. Preds Sabres and Rangers all disasters.

Dallas just ripped off 7 dubs in a row before finally losing on a back to back. They are fine. They know how to pace themselves over the long grind of a season.

I did not see the Rangers implosion coming.

Right now I think many teams like the stars, Oilers, Vegas, Colorado, and a bunch others are just ready to get in and then turn it on.

Trade deadline will loom large for many. Oilers have to hit on defense if they want another go.

Itll be interesting to see who buys/sells. Lots of teams in the East could be either/or right now. I do know, Waddell said if we are in the hunt by the time the TDL is around, we won’t be selling. They already extended ZAR for another year.

Yeah I am hoping the teams in the east with be traders as no one in the West will trade with us.

Dallas 6 pts behind the best team in the West with 2 in hand. The Jets typically start to falter in the back half of the season. Feeling good about things as they stand. Want to peak in April/May/June. Seeding and home ice is honestly irrelevant. Will come down to matchups. Probably going to get Dallas-Vegas part 4 at some point.

Stars depth and youthful talent will keep them relevant for years. Biggest thing to shore up is the powerplay. Their depth will pay off in the business end of the season. Some teams already starting to look knackered.

Ovechkin is 20 goals away from passing Gretzky’s record. I think he’s getting it this year, and if he doesn’t he’ll be like 5 off going into the final year of his contract.

I hope after he passes him he’ll keep going and get to 900.

And full credit to the Capitals, they could’ve went into a rebuild by now and farmed up draft picks but they kept the team together and even retooled it brilliantly to try and be competitive. Now they have a chance to win the cup.

According to TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston, the Avalanche will be receiving forwards Martin Necas and Jack Drury from Carolina, along with a second- and fourth-round draft pick as part of the blockbuster deal that also involves the Chicago Blackhawks.

Rantanen, who is slated to be an unrestricted free agent this coming summer, has 25 goals and 64 points in 49 games with the Avalanche this year. The 28-year-old forward has gone over 100 points each of the last two campaigns.

The addition of the veteran bolsters an already-strong forward group for the Hurricanes, who rank second in the Metropolitan Division at 30-16-3 through 49 games. Carolina ranks fifth in the NHL with 165 goals scored entering play on Friday.

LeBrun also reported that Blackhawks forward Taylor Hall is involved in the trade, with multiple reports indicating the veteran is also going to the Hurricanes.

Maybe they think he himself doesn't want to sign. I am sure the Avalanche wanted to re-sign him
Yeah But odd they wouldn't still sign him with the cap going up huge.

He is worth 13 million
GM said he didn’t want to be cap-tied to 3 players (Mackinnon, Makar, Rantanen) and called it a “business decision”.

Rantanen said contract talks were progressing and he was willing to sign on a “discount”.

We don’t know what they consider a discount. He has the same agent as Draisaitl who just signed 14m for 8 years.

This is a huge deal for Carolina, there were talks of them slowing it down this past summer. Bringing in Rantanen shows they’ve gone all in. It’ll be interesting to see if he signs in Carolina in the summer or if he’ll go elsewhere.

Owen Power is also reportedly on the block. He was a first overall pick, there’s gonna be plenty of good teams sniffing around that.

But he is no Drai. I think he will get 13 million from Carolina with the cap going up. Maybe he asked for 14? I guess you dont want to end up like the Leafs.
Leafs are a good example of what not to do. They cap tied themselves to 4 guys and have spots all over the roster that need fixing that they can’t. Since like 2016 they got out of the first round once then promptly lost in the second round. Every other year they lost in the first round.

He isn’t Drai but we don’t know what he considers a “discount”, maybe he thinks he’s close to his level and see’s 13 as a bargain.

Canucks are in big trouble.

There were always rumors and whispers that Pettersson and Miller didn’t get along. It was becoming apparent that they weren’t the bestest of friends but didn’t know how deep the feud went.

Rutherford came out and said not only are they at odds, but it’s beyond fixable.

Said something about they tried professional counseling, it’d get better but then it’d just deteriorate again and back to square one.

He also said there’s a rift in the locker room in general. Probably team JT vs team Pettey. “Not sure if trading them can fix it.”

He doesn’t wanna start over with a complete rebuild but if they were to, then Quinn Hughes would be first on the block. But wants to avoid it.

I moan about being a CBJ fan but 50 years in the NHL and the Canucks have never won a Cup. They’ve made a few SCF’s. But it’s mostly been a tire fire. They had good teams in the 80’s and 90’s that got torn to shreds after not winning anything. They had the Sedin twins era, huge Luongo acquisition, ended in a Game 7 loss in 2011 and the city being burned down. They had Horvat and rumor was when he was traded last year, he had issues with Miller. Miller also had problems in other teams, I’d say he’s the real trouble maker in the room. It’s tough to trade a guy who’s so good.

Canucks have a strong team that’s underperformed for years. They showed what they could do last year and instead of rolling this year they’ve gone back to off-ice problems. Seems like most people don’t know how to fix it. One thing, Rutherford blabbing to the media won’t do anything. I think he hopes it’ll p1ss off the room and they’ll all target him as the enemy and play hard on the ice to prove him wrong. Maybe in the 80’s and 90’s it’d work. In 2025 I think players are more petty and they’ll see it as wow our president is a moron. Why am I here again?

I wonder where they go from here.
