Fruity Jr getting started vs Bogdan.

Very odd coverage. Only one camera? In game 2 we’re looking at Bogdan only, Brenda not on camera. And the score is not even shown. Pretty low-rent! :-D

I think the one camera operator took a bathroom break, because now he even allows Bogdan to leave the frame. I wonder if there is supposed to be an.. editor? producer? that selects the camera view and he fell asleep?

Oh, camera guy woke up, now points camera at scoreboard during the point. This is riveting.

Hotmama (someone said that earlier today and it stuck with me) was hanging in with Krejcikova until just now. Though Krej hasn't looked like a world beater so if she loses her serve here I wouldn't be surprised.

Cornet is being Cornet-ed. I can see her losing 1 and 1, or coming back and making it a match/winning. Oh, Cornet, never change. For some reason, I thought she was retiring last year.

The full court camera is fixed. There's no cameraman. It must have crapped out.

Parry tied with Wang. Tough, but great shots from both sides.
That's where I am not yet sure about Parry - the tough end of matches.
She needs to buckle up. Wang is taller and athletic, returns hard now -- what's made the change.

Parry scores a great victory against the better ranked of the Wangs, Xinyu,
in a match which was between her great shots and a very solid game of a powerfully built 6-feet-tall player. It will register in Parry's mind as a map to follow. Great victory, as the stands were occupied mainly by Chinese spectators, who wanted very much a victory against a more artistic player than they have. Not this time.

Next for Diane is Rakhimova, not easy, close to Parry in all the stats, but never a world JR champion, which Parry was once, in 2019, beating Gauff then. Rakhimova was only #20 once. FYI, Wang Xinyu was #2. Being bigger, Wang has progressed quicker than Parry in the WTA.

That was an unlucky draw for Samsonova. You want to play someone easier than that to get your toes warm. It might not benefit Sabalenka - looking ahead - because I think she has a poor record against Anisimova.

Still not one grand slam quarter final for Samsonova at the age of 25, despite 4 titles (inc 2 at 500 level) + 2 W1000 runners up. It feels like she's beaten or at least tormented every elite player on tour in one off matches.

The stadium is full on Leylah, poor Sara. Also Leylah energiser bunny is not as annoying as it looks on TV.
I'd be very keen to see good runs from LAF and Mandy Mova. Both have promised so much over the years.
AA's win over Samsonova isn't a huge shock. She plays well as the underdog and Samsonova is in a real slump whereas AA is rejuvenated. Really glad AA and Osaka are back in the mix, they should be real thorns in the side of Swiatek, Gauff, Sabalenka and Rybakina this season.

Wow, last years junior Aus Open and French Open champ, Alina Korneeva takes out Sorribes Tormo to make the 2R on debut.

Born in 2007, the kid is only 16.
SST is a tough player to put away, so this is impressive for a 16yo. Great to see the WTA's 'next gen' making waves today.

Unfortunately for Linette she's out at the 1R stage after a run to the SF last year. She will drop right down the rankings due to this. Other than a few occasions, she generally lost R1 or R2 of WTA events last year.

My fingers are crossed for Krejcikova to work her way into this tournament. I really don't think we have seen Krejcikova in form enough since her 2021 RG win. She's had a few flashes in the pan but a run of form is long overdue. I am surprised to see her playing doubles with Siegemund though. I expected her and Siniakova to focus more on singles this year. It is bizarre that they've broken up their team in an Olympic year also.

My player to watch, Wozniacki through after Linette retired.

Linette was a surprise SFist in Melbourne last year so her ranking will plummet from #24 to well into the 50's or even lower.

Burrage was spraying UEs all over the place.

I was always less optimistic about her establishing herself in the top 100 than Boulter - her complete collapse against Rinaldo Persson (ranked nearly 300 places lower than her) in the BJK Cup last November, was painful stuff. Her career has been de-railed by a series of ankle injury problems (and surgeries) though.

I think Burrage peaked last year with the Nottingham final. I think she'll be a bit like Dart; a bit of time in the top 100 and then back to the more comfortable zone of 100-150. She actually has a bit more game than Dart IMO, but is also more fragile and prone to collapses.

Considering that ranking got her seeded pretty highly especially in 250s she really didn't capitalise on it unfortunately.

I'm intrigued to see what Wozniacki can do. She took an L to Svitolina, and otherwise didn't play any more tour level matches pre-AO.

It really depends on how much they can challenge her mental drawbacks. She's a relative novice to the WTA tour so she has a lot of experience to gain. The Brits benefit during the grass swing as often they've played on grass growing up whereas a lot of other players haven't. Having said that, the media pressure is pretty mental so if you can cope with the pressure (if you feel it as pressure) at home then I'm not sure why you feel it so much when you play the other majors. Maybe there's a case of imposter syndrome going on (Keothavong alluded to this pre-tournament) but I'd imagine this has been addressed time and time again on tour so there must be practical steps (which they'll no doubt be aware of) that can be taken to move forward. Again though I think playing tour events will be a huge part of that as the level really is that much higher. Korpatsch has kind of been in her position the past few years but her results have started to improve as of late. She's nothing spectacular but clearly persistence can pay off.

I also agree that Burrage has more upside than Dart, but is more frail mentally.

I think she has only won 4 tour level main draw matches outside the UK during her career, 3 of them last year against Raina in Warsaw and Cluj (the Warsaw match was messy stuff) and at the US Open. Korpatsch beat her twice during back end of last year as well, including a match at Cluj when Burrage was leading 5-1 in the final setbreak.

Dart is my least favourite British female player by far, as she comes across as such a petulant brat to me.

The Parry-Xinyu match sounded interesting to me on paper. Both players definitely have potential IMO - Parry ended last year with a run of defeats after a SF run in Lausanne, but had won a couple of matches at Auckland at the start of this year. The fact that she has a one handed backhand also increases my interest in her progress.

I believe that Xinyu has had some wrist troubles recently, and it seems that she doesn't have the same confidence with her forehand, that she had last year when she was making nice progress.

Not a word about Saba vs. Seidel? I watched the second set and the outcome was very much as I anticipated - so happy that Seidel could get her in the scoreboard at about the last possible moment. Until the very last game Aryna did less UEs that I would have expected and Seidel served MUCH BETTER than in her 3rd qualification match, which had often much slower 1st serve speeds and Dementieva/Ivanovic-like tossing of ball to wherever.

Sabalenka showed her nicer side by giving Seidel a game at the end of the match. The 18 year old German was obviously overwhelmed on her first ever grand slam match playing world no.2.

That poor lass looked close to tears near the end of that. She can probably play better than that. Just couldn't get a game early enough and it ran away from her. Certainly wouldn't have been used to the weight of shot.

she was crying either 0-40 or 15-40 at 0-4 2nd set (Saba serve). I think Saba definitely affected.
