lol, pretending not seeing it surely works for some. Anyway, I am not the one who brought this up, but if you support the non handshake, then you should also support boycotting Israel, remove its flag from all international events...

Zheng through to her first slam final. Was the only one to really trouble Iga in RG 22. So lets what she can do in the final. But of course there will be some nerves

I love how this idiot insists on not wanting to get into a political debate and then keeps posting political statements.
 
I went to bed at nearly 1:30 a.m. last night (New York time) when it was 2-2 in the third set of the Hsieh/Mertens vs. Hunter/Siniakova match. I finished watching it as soon as I got up this morning. What a match! It was super close with almost every game going to deuce in the third set. The 11-minute game with Hunter serving at 2-3 was incredible with great point after great point. That Mertens wide-angle cross-court winner on match point was stunning. Siniakova and especially Hunter fought tooth and nail, and the commentators said it was the doubles match of the tournament. It was certainly the best one I’ve seen so far.

No points given for mixed otherwise miss Desirae Krawczyk would be an absolute threat out there

Who says we don’t? There’s no woman in the top 200 that I know of from Israel so stripping a flag for players that don’t exist is just a complete non starter. Your suggestion is trying to take away from the serious situation at hand.
 
Desirae Krawczyk is not just a threat in mixed final but especially a treat. :love: Sorry Mark and other Hsieh-fans but I'm definitely rooting for Krawczyk/ Skupski taking the crown back to them. (In other words "To whom it belongs to" ;) )

About ladies semifinals one more comment: I hope this is the start of new coming of Yastremska. Yes she has been annoying brat and have done questionable actions during her matches etc. but the TALENT she possess no sane mind can deny.

So we are looking at another boring Blowout final in the final. Congratulations to Zhang for getting to the final but i can't see Sabalenka losing more than 6 games total. :eek:

Might be interesting on a political forum, but not here. The handshake is just not that big a deal and most players don't even live in the country they were born in. It's sports.
 
I think Zheng has reasonable odds against Sabalenka. She’s the underdog with nothing to lose. She might get overwhelmed by the occasion, of course, but if she keeps calm, with her defensive game, she can cause Sabalenka to make unforced errors. Let’s see. It’s going to be interesting.

Zhang didn't make it to the final, it was Zheng. :)

Did you see the Sab - Gauff match?
That was supposed to be a blowout too but turned into a close match!
While Sab is the favorite, Zheng still has a legit shot at it.

I ended up staying up for the whole thing. Was wired for an hour after.

Hsieh was off most of the match.....missing many easy volleys. Was painful. Mertens carried them to that first set comeback. But Hsieh really turned on the magic in the clutch moments of the third. There were about half a dozen absolutely stunning points.

Yes Sab definitely looks fitter and is probably at peak form (technique-wise).
But she still has work to do strategy-wise.

I didn't see her last match but did watch the highlights.
Although she did manage to win I was a bit disappointed with how she won.
The highlights showed her resorting to Gauff's return to loop-d-loop tennis. :(

Sure she did flatten out some power strokes when required but, she was lulled into
longer than necessary rallies that are right up Coco's alley.

Sab should be bossing Coco every single rally from the first ball struck,
the same way she did against her opponents in her previous matches this tournie.

And now for the key numbers:

2023 U.S. Open Sep. 9 6-2, 3-6, 2-6
Winners: Gauff: 13 Sab: 25
U.E.'s: Gauff: 19 Sab: 46

2024 A.O. Jan. 25 7-6, 6-4
Winners: Gauff: 22 Sab: 33
U.E.'s: Gauff: 20 Sab: 28

Sab continued to dominate in winners, but it was her ability
to cut down on her ridiculous number of U.E.'s (from U.S. Open)
that allowed her to take the match.

So overall I'm glad Sab won (she's on the right track against Coco)
but she still has some work to do before she can play her with total
confidence.
 
These two don't play each other very often (Sab-Gauff), maybe once or twice a year.
Surprisingly, Gauff currently leads their h2h 4-3.

It will be interesting to see how their rivalry develops over the next few years.
Both players are getting stronger.
 
Offense > defense, Coco's gotta get that forehand figured out, can't believe she misses so many routine FHs.

Agreed--both are getting stronger, have a great dynamic between them and are a growing rivalry women's tennis has not witnessed in some time.

Cute abbreviation cupcake. More along the lines that less than 16% voted for “Sab” and she looks locked for a grand slam.
 
Desirae is of course trying to get the career slam in mixed doubles. Had won the 2021 French Open, Wimbledon and US Open as well as the 2022 Wimbledon title. Had made the AO SF in 2021 and 2023 but never made the final til now.
 
It's a shame to have such poor attendance for a slam final of this caliber. :(

Guy sitting in the stands just gave new meaning to a 'tennis fan'.
He was wearing a cap with a fan at the front of it, blowing air down into his face. :)

Anybody know if all others in this match have Polish origins than Hsieh? Both Krawczyk and Skupski sound like Polish names to me.

My memory let me down then. I remembered she won AO, FO & Wimbledon, but guess not then... :unsure: (I guess FO was then won with Salisbury and after that she has been again with Skupski)
 
Really weak chair umpire in this final.

Didn't call Zielinski's clear screams a hindrance and then also hasn't called a time violation when Krawczyk went way past 0 on the shot clock.
 
Skupski has been the weaker one of this pairing and has cost it for Krawczyk with poor serving and double faults at the worst time.

They led 7-6 4-2, 2 games from the title but now it's in the 3rd set breaker and Hsieh/Zielinski lead 6-2 in that.
 
That is Hsieh's first mixed doubles title (I thought she had won one before?!) and her 7th slam overall.

She'll be in the ladies doubles final on Sunday with Mertens for her 8th slam.

And Zielinski's first slam too, he has Hsieh to thank for that!

seriously, I can sort of understand not being used to Hsieh's pace but the double faults are unforgiveable.
 
That was some comeback by Hsieh/Zielinki. Zielinki was pretty mediocre in the match tiebreaker, but Hsieh performed.
 
Judy Dalton of the Original 9 to hand out the trophies. So lovely to have her in the house today!

Wish more people were here having watched this match cause it was super fun!
