This year's two Grand Slam champs -- Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz -- are featured in Beijing. Can anyone stop them from clashing in the final?

Good field here, should be good. Hoping for entertaining matches.

Preview:

Jannik is the defending champion here, beating Daniil last year.

Zhou vs Kotov is quite a match ! Some great points at 4-4 but towards the final phase of the match too many errors from both, the looked exhausted

The Italian flavor Cobolli played super aggressive in the 3rd set TB to beat the mug Bublik

Bublik was clearly annoyed that Cobolli seemed to be bashing away and going for broke, with nearly everything going the Italian's way.

I don't like the guy, but if Cobolli could play like that all the time, he would be in the top 10.

Grigor and Struff withdrew at the last minute:

Results so far, all except Lehecka needed 3 sets to get through. Others through are Jannik/Griekspoor/Cobolli/Kotov/Mannarino

Mannarino reached his 300th match win, aged 36.

Just amazing how the draw starts opening from the very start.

Man, Giovanni has a formiddable serve and can hit well too. Should he develop confidence, a better return game and consistency, he'll be a daunting opponent. Carlitos played well, getting through in straights.

Others to advance included Medvedev/Musetti/Davidovich/Khachanov/Rublev/Bu/Bautusta/Safiullin

Cut down the double faults (easily by stopping bombing 2nd serves all the time) and he will go a long way.

The Perricard-Alcaraz match yesterday was incredibly entertaining. I think Perricard has a great future. I couldn't believe he is 6'8'', because he is very well proportioned and he moves with ease.

I think Perricard could be a definite threat soon. It will be interesting to see how he fares during the grass season too. He can hit the ball pretty flat, and his serve will do real damage there.

So far his best performance this year is on grass. His game on paper is even more tailor-made for grass than Alcaraz.

If he becomes a real threat then Alcaraz will be in deep trouble, because if Alcaraz loses ground in grass while Sinner keeps racking up AO/USO titles then Sinner will win their Slam race.

And you don't think Perricard will be a threat on hardcourt? It is hard to tell how things will go. To me, Alcaraz has a lot of tricks up his sleeve on grass, because it is a surface that rewards his all court game, and his net skills are unmatched among top players at the moment.

Perricard is definitely an interesting player to follow though.

I expect him to be a grass/indoor bunny in the near future. His outdoor hard performance so far this year is worse than his clay performance.

Safiullin played probably his best match of the season. Good win by Jannik, again.

And still won only 46% of the points. Some errors by Jannik but also some big points by Roman to save so many break points. A bad serve start, but fairly smooth surfing after that and now we have once again a big hitter in Jiri coming up...

His movement looks smooth but it's somewhat deceiving, guy is pretty slow.

Yah,man. Kid carries his height well, can move well. Hit some beauties against Carlitos. I've got my eye on him - be interesting to see his development.

There is a repetitive narrative on this board that Jannik will dominate on hard courts to the exclusion of all others. The dude is incredibly good, for sure, but you ask a good question - Giovanni and others ( I like what I see from Fonseca, for example) could excel on all surfaces. I doubt if upcoming players are going to wait for permission from the Big 3/ other tennis greats/Jannik/Carlitos / to excel on any surface. This is what makes it interesting for me - I look forward to a mix of great players, vying for the titles.

I like Safiullin's game/demeanour. Good job by him to get to this stage having got a slot after another player's withdrawal. Jannik's win was never in doubt, kid is another level.

Maybe. Personally, I think it's just that Sinner is a slow starter. He does what he did against Safiullin all the time, losing a loose first set and righting the ship to cruise to victory in the second and third.

You are absolutely right, I don't think the upcoming players are going to be inhibited against Alcaraz or Sinner. If anything, Alcaraz and Sinner have shown the way, that it is possible for young players to succeed, after the Big 3 domination era.

Sinner is extremely solid on hardcourts, that is for sure. The thing he has against Carlos (which is also part of the reason I don't find his game as exciting as Carlitos's) is that it is relatively simple and easier to reproduce on a consistent basis. His baseline game is extremely solid. If he can win with his meat and potatoes game like this, the advantage is that there are fewer pieces that can break in his game.

That seems like an anomaly though. Why do you figure that is the case, and do you think this might change in the future as he becomes more experienced?

His coach the last year has been a big dark skinned guy. I've seen this girl in his box for a few tournaments. Girlfriend perhaps. He's pretty private.
Yeah, difficult to guess. She was the only person in his box and she did seem to give him advice from time to time.

Not that odd if you saw the run Bu had last week. Besides, Moose can lose to anyone when it's not his day.
Very true, Musetti also coming off the final in Chengdu from Tuesday, might be a bit tired.

Also, never easy playing a Chinese player in China, they just find an extra gear. Look at Zhang Shuai!

I think mooses shots were lacking punch earlier. No bite on the slice. Playing better to get back to 4 all from being within a point or so of going down 2-5. But not convinced he can keep up the level.
