Another week another WTA 1000. Last one before the final slam of 2024.

Draw has a lot more players than last weeks Canadian Open.

Seeds are:
Swiatek, Gauff, Sabalenka, Rybakina, Paolini, Pegula, Zheng, Ostapenko, Kasatkina, Samsonova, Navarro, Kalinskaya, Azarenka, Kostyuk, Vekic and Haddad Maia.

Wildcards have gone to Andreescu, Wozniacki, Dolehide and Stearns.

Protected Rankings from Badosa, Tomljanovic and Zhang. Special Exempt for Anisimova who's into the Canadian Open final.

Qualies still underway.

Quite a few withdrawals, Vondrousova, Sakkari, Krejcikova, Keys, Jabeur, Collins, Garcia etc.

Osaka loses in the qualies to 20yo Ashlyn Krueger (82) 3-6 6-2 3-6. Not great for her confidence. In Naomi's defense, Krueger beat Leylah Fernandez in Toronto, so she seems to be doing well. Time's running out for Naomi's form to make an appearance this season!

I remember Osaka losing in the last 16 of this to Teichman in 2021. Even back then, she was very inconsistent; she just seemed to raise her game for the slams (the hard court ones, at any rate).

Great win for Dart today to make the main draw. Won 10 of the last 11 games against Avanesyan.

Osaka loses in the qualies to 20yo Ashlyn Krueger (82) 3-6 6-2 3-6. Not great for her confidence. In Naomi's defense, Krueger beat Leylah Fernandez in Toronto, so she seems to be doing well. Time's running out for Naomi's form to make an appearance this season!

Damn that's still a bad loss, and in qualies too. I'm not sure if some of these top players returning just have no appetite for qualies but if you don't get a WC it's just what you have to do to make main draw.
In Osaka's case, I'm not sure how Wozniacki gets a WC when Osaka has 4 majors, 2 being the USO and this is the USO swing. Andreescu also won the USO... I think Wozniacki should have been placed in qualies here (unless I'm missing something of course) but also she's probably going to retire again in the next year anyway.

Townsend just beat Volynets pretty handily, and she had a pretty good run last week. Is she finally putting things together?

In Osaka's case, I'm not sure how Wozniacki gets a WC when Osaka has 4 majors, 2 being the USO and this is the USO swing.

I don't know the story, but I suspect she applied pretty late because she was playing Toronto. Might have been a last minute request.

Hmm, interesting question. If I were to guess, because her ranking (#90) is not as high as Woz's (#84). The other two Americans because it's in Cincinnati. Andreescu, probably using her Protected Ranking (around 64?). As for PR, apparently the rule says that it can be used to enter 2 Grand Slam max.

Krueger the winner. She's good. Vekic and some other Euros (that don't live in FLA) have a tough time in the heat of summer in the USA. Vekic had a long MTO for dizziness.

Avanesyan saved 7 break points in her last service game. Andreescu has so much variety, but she pulls the trigger too early too often and just has too many unforced errors. She really needs more patience.

I paid $5 to sleep on the floor of their motel room. with cement floors. My partner slept in the bed of his el camino. First time playing on Har-tru.

Oh yes, she's staying at the wonderful Marriott Cincinnati Northeast. Beautiful view of I-71 and the Kings Auto Mall. Pretty convenient to the tennis center though.
