2024 Doubles talk

@travlerajm Do you know what happened to Heliovaara/Patten? Saw that they withdrew in the second set.

Gille/Vliegen had a tough rd 1 draw vs Sinner/Draper and lost 8-10 in the match TB.

On the women's side, Leyla Fernandez and her younger sister beat #5 seeds Stefani/Schuurs in straights 2 & 4. Impressive.

They managed this point a few points later, then retired.

Ouch, which one caused them to stop? Looks like Heliovaara had it worse.

Ram/Salisbury saved 4 consecutive match points and beat Nys/Zielinski 11-9. Now they move on to play granollers/zeballos in the final.

New #1 dabrowski/routliffe play krawczyk/dolehide in the women's final.

Ram/Salisbury have been the dominant team to beat in the high-humidity summer hardcourt season.

The muggy conditions and stable footing seem to enable Joe to out-athlete his opponents.

They will go for their 4th consecutive US Open championship in a couple weeks.

Well, they repeated last year by being runner ups again this year in Montreal. I don't see how they can keep bailing themselves out at the USO. Last year, they went on a ~20-1 to close out the year and win the YEC. If they can't 4-peat the USO, I can see them splitting. Maybe Ram plays w/ Kracijek and Salisbury plays w/ Skupski?

Glad to see Krawczyk/Dolehide get the win in women's.

Matt Ebden is just wasting his doubles talents playing with 44 year old Bopanna.

The recent Olympic Gold Medallist with John Peers who has won men's doubles slams with Max Purcell and also Rohan Bopanna lost in his first match with Bopanna as the 2nd seeds in both Canada and now Cincy.

Both times he was in play to return to the #1 ranking.

Needs to ditch that pairing and perhaps try full time with Peers or look elsewhere. Rohan's lack of movement is really letting him down.

They lost to a pair of singles guys in cincy first round last year by similar scoreline. Then they made the us open final. Bopanna will be fine when they drop another 500 feet elevation. Bopanna is a sea level hardcourt guy.

This has to be the funniest thing I’ve seen in a while. The reason 44 year old Bopanna is struggling is because of some tiny elevation? He’s not playing in Mexico City or Bogotá that’s like 7,500 feet above sea level. It was Montreal with literally like barely a couple hundred feet of elevation lol.

Dude is closer to 60 than he is to most of the top young players on tour. Think that might be the issue. His movement and his fitness is dreadful.

And yet Bopanna/Ebden are #4 in the race, and the second favorite in the odds to win the us open. And Bopanna was World #1 earlier in the year.

Not bad for a geezer.

They won the Aus Open and Miami which was such a great feat and I was so proud. But even if you look at their overall partnership together, they made quite a few SF’s and finals and never converted.

Since the Miami title the only good result was the French SF. Everything else has been early losses. And as we’ve just seen at the Olympics, it’s not Ebden that is the one letting the team down. He’s winning Olympic Gold and crushing it while Bopanna…. I’ll leave it there.

Not trying to downplay Bopanna @travlerajm. He’s been an incredible player for decades but I think his time has now come. Ebden being able to win an Olympic Gold with Peers (who he hasn’t played too much with) just shows he can win big tournaments with others and should do that for his remaining years (Ebden isn’t young either, either 36 or 37?).

If I was to place a bet on a first round loss at the US Open for Bopanna/Ebden or a bet on them winning the title I think I know which bet I’d place it on unfortunately. Even if the odds have them as second favourite.

I watched the tiebreak in their last match: They were fine until ebden doubled faulted. Bopanna tried to stay even w him and double faulted on match point. I'd say they're both to blame for their recent losses. Let's wait on splitting them up until after the US open and ATP finals to see how they do.

I agree that peers is a good partner for whoever teams up w him next year. There will be a lot of shuffling.

And I'll bet they make it to the 2nd round.

Michelson/McDonald got extremely lucky and held off 2 match points for Ram/Salisbury, who served for the match. Michelson flubbed a return, Salisbury passed on a high sitter volley, and it dropped in. Then, Ram blew an overhead on Michelson/McDonald's match point. I'm impressed at Michelson's ability to hang w/ these experienced players at such a young age. I'm trying not to show my bias b/c he's from a local club.

Michelson/McDonald just beat the #1 seeds in the first set tiebreak, again w/ some luck (Granollers blew a sitter volley on set point). Currently at the end of the second set on a rain delay.

#1 dabrowski/Salisbury are out.

Back from the pickleball courts, Donald Young is through, thanks to Taylor Townsend.

Salisbury/Ram are going to lose some serious points, being the 3-time defending champs. Doubtful they'll be able to do it for a fourth. They're not Federer.

Will they split for next year? Kracijek, who already lost w Rojer, is waiting for a partner.

No shame in losing to the defending champs.

Expecting more chalk today to finish out R32.

Ram/Salisbury vs Glasspool/Hijikata could get interesting.
I thought so, too, but no.

Today's mixed dubs had some good match ups:
Donald Young/Townsend won again?! (took out Nys/Kichenok)
Bopanna/Sutjiadi vs. Peers/Siniakova looked like a tight one.

Townsend/Siniakova got a walkover. I think they're going to be the team to beat in women's. I like Ebden/Krecjikova in mixed, and I think Granollers/Zeballos might finally get the monkey off their back.

Granollers/Zeballos are indeed the best team statistically thru the first 2 rounds, based on dominance +/-.

They are +37 (receiver points won minus serve points lost).

What is the format in doubles wrt ads and deciding set? I thought I saw they're playing ads and a full 3rd set in women's doubles. Then I saw no-ads and 10pt tiebreak in mixed. Is the no-ads and 3rd set 10pt tiebreak only for mixed?

Bopanna is the oldest and highest ranked doubles player at 44.4yo and #6. Still in men's doubles R16 and QF mixed. His mixed doubles today was quite fun to watch. Still an amazing player, effortless.

On Monday mixed doubles match, Bopanna will be playing against Ebden, his men's doubles partner.

Stats thru first two rounds for the Top 8 seeded teams ranked by +/-, all still alive:

  1. Granollers/Zeballos +37
  2. Ram/Salisbury +36
  3. Bolleli/Vavassori +24
  4. Skupski/Venus +24
  5. Heliovaara/Patten +22
  6. Bopanna/Ebden +18
  7. Arévalo/Pavic +14
  8. Purcell/Thompson +12

Chalk continuing to hold up, for the most part for the top seeded teams, with only #2 Ebden/Bopanna going down so far, in a mild upset.

Still feels like it will take a Herculean performance to dethrone 3-time defending champs Ram/Salisbury in these conditions.

Some big matches on tap today as we enter the business end of the tourney.

My boys are Vegas underdogs today against the pair of ex World #1s.

Well, ram/Salisbury are out in straights. Nobody but Fed can 4peat.

Your boys are also out in straights.

My pick for mixed (ebden/krejcikova) is out at the hands of his regular dubs partner.

I'm hoping Townsend/Siniakova win women's. Other than that, I don't have any other teams I'm rooting for. And I'm rooting against ostapenko perennially.

Ram/ Salisbury were my picks too. Sorry to see the defending champs go out. Watching my other duo, Skupski/Venus now. Dudes should focus.

Edit: Yah man, they won. Play Arevalo/Pavic in the qf.

Donald Young (yeah, Donald Young) and Taylor Townsend are in the semis of mixed (which they've actually done before years ago). Third win in a row. Townsend missed a lot down the stretch, but they managed to get it done. Young is playing about as well as you could expect him to having not played on tour for three years. Heliovaara missed some sitters down the stretch; didn't play well overall. Danilina was better.

Pickleball is good dubs skillz training.

I listened to a podcast w Neil Skupski. It's amazing how much the LTA supports British players w coaching/scouting. He said that they have files on most players, and he can look up videos on opponents, read about where they favor serves, etc.

Louis cayer is almost always in the stands when Brits are playing dubs.
... and then we have the USTA with their unwavering support of Taylor Townsend - then (2012) a No. 1 junior player in the world when she was 'sidelined' (in the word of New York Times) by USTA. She has been quite successful lately with her doubles.

Lammons/Withrow looking undeniable here thus far, Koolhov/Mektic steadier in the early 2nd set. Thompson / Purcell down the top seeds, nice from these dudes.

Edit: Kool/Mek fought back, made a match of it. Hope Venus/Skupski get through.
