2024 Doubles talk

Just watching a bit of Peers/Murray in Basel, who were up a break against Roger-Vasselin/ Gonzalez, but unable to retain their advantage. It is now 5-3 to R-V/G in the 1st, looking businesslike.
Mektic/Koolhof through, aiming for their 5th title this year. Good job. They'll probably face R-V/G.

Hope Venus/Skupski lift the trophy tomorrow in Vienna.

Edit: Well, Peers / Murray showed me, and R-V/G the door! Excellent performance to out play the number 2 seeds, and win it. Can they get past Mektic/ Koolhof too?

Purcell/Thompson become the 4th team to officially punch their ticket to Turin, as additional long shot hopefuls were eliminated during the last 500 week.

The last 4 spots are still mathematically available, but it’s really that 8th and final spot that is still unclaimed.

The last masters event of the year in Paris will likely decide who takes it.

Peers/Murray unseeded, beat the number one seeds Mektic/Koolhof, in straights to win the title in Basel - having beaten the number 2 seeds in the sf yesterday. Man, a poke in the eye to my musings! Well done to them.
In Vienna, my picks fell too - with the home duo Erler/Miedler dominating the decider to beat Venus/Skupski.

Like these dudes playing together, good to see they'll be contesting the WTF.

Thompson greatly benefits from having Purcell as a partner. Will Purcell ever embrace the fact that he's a great dubs player?
Thompson is actually pretty solid, one of the few very good ad-court guys currently, but yes Purcell is the man.

JT has an American twist serving style that is very difficult to break in doubles. And his groundies are heavy, although his return goes awol for parts of matches.

I just looked at the draw: lammons/withrow currently sit at 9th. They have a tough first round vs. Nys/Zielinski. What's more intriguing is that if they make it out, then they play #7 krawietz/puetz, who are the only team that they have a chance to replace for the YEC. They are currently about 800 points back, which means they would have still have to win the tournament to have a chance.

It’s my understanding that Ebden/Bopanna and Heliovaara/Patten still have a bit of work to do to clinch, but maybe I’m wrong. Only one slam champ can get in on the automatic berth.

If anyone could make Eri Hozumi (5'6") look tall, it would be Shuko Aoyama (5'1"). Congrats on their entertaining Japan Open title win over Siegemund/Shibahara especially considering Shibahara was Aoyama's long time partner.

Really? Why? Have they played since the USO?

Not sure why you ran those stats since April. I think it would be more telling to run the stats for the hard court season after wimby.
I ran the stats since my horse in the race was born. :)

The most predictive aspect of the conditions isn’t the surface. It’s the humidity.

My boys aren’t one of the best teams in the sweaty summer conditions of the NA hard courts or the muggy Asian swing. But they’re one of the contenders as long as the weather is cooler and the air is drier. They are versatile across surfaces, but not across all temps and humidities.

Purcell/Thompson have been the most versatile team overall, with Pavic/Arévalo next best in that regard.

Turin has a touch of altitude at 800 feet, just enough to make it tougher on the teams that don’t come to net as much.

The intriguing Croatian pairing of Cilic/Dodig sail past Argies Gonzo/Molteni and will face Heliovaara/Patten in R16.

Cilic isn’t known for his doubles play, but he’s certainly an elite serving talent and so won’t be an easy out when paired with a 7-time doubles slam champ.

The towering tandem of El Giraffe / Zedraffe outduels the all-American pair of ex dubs numero unos Krajicek/Ram to advance to R16.

They will pose a tall order for Bopanna/Ebden.

With Gonzo/Molteni losing today, they are mathematically eliminated from the race to Turin.

4 spots available for 5 teams still alive. Lammons/Withrow are about to take the court against Nys/Zilinsky to keep their hopes alive.

Lammons/Withrow are 60% favorites in the odds, but I have this one as a pick’em in the indoor conditions, as Lammons/Withrow have pumped up their record on a diet of wins in sweatbox conditions where they have a physics edge.

I'm shocked that ram/Salisbury lost. They don't seem to playing at their usual level, lost a few TBs lately.

I expect lammons/withrow to get through this one, being up a set now. However, nys/Zielinski are solid, despite being in a recent slump.

I'm surprised the argentines lost today to a new pairing. They've been playing well.

Ram/Salisbury have been split since the Us open.

Heh, heh, intriguing indeed! And Cilic is playing singles too. They'll probably not get too far, but good stuff so far.

I'm interested to see how the 44 yr old Bopanna gets on with the 41 year old Melo (a favourite of mine).

Man, Ebden/Bopanna bringing it! 2nd set tb, up a set and 5-2. Can Zverev / Melo turn it around?

The answer is 'no'! With a significant point advantage, they took the match despite Bopanna losing his serves. Wonder how much further they can get.

When I crunched the stats for the top teams, I was surprised to see that Bo/Ebden have gone awol the past 6 months.

But sometimes all it takes is a reset in more favorable conditions for the team strengths to get back on the winning track. They are a legit threat to win the Turin title given the conditions.

I think melo's level has fallen way off from when he and kubot were #1. For being 6'7, his serve isn't effective.

I'm disappointed to see the singles players matched up against each other in the first round: bublik and partner vs. perricard/fils. The draw should put the singles players vs the dubs teams in the first round.

The Giraffe is listed as 6’8”, which means he’s probably even taller.

Yah man, Melo's better days seem behind him. He looked slow.

Bublik / Khachanov and Fils / Mpetshi-Perricard cancelled, with Murray/Peers playing the Frenchies who are up a set.
Man, Venus/Skupski demolished Salisbury/Rojer 61,60! Roger-Vasselin / Gonzales through in a better contested match. I enjoy the 'real' dubs players beating the singles player pairings. They play Thompson / Purcell next - JT got through in his singles too, yesterday.

I saw that scoreline. That almost never happens in dubs. I wonder if Salisbury or Rojer was injured. I'm going to have to queue that up on tennistv to find out what happened.

The French kids squeaked by, understandably, given the giant's serve.

It seems the conditions reward high sw players. Cilic and Skup are 360+.

but Purcell/Thompson are annoyingly hard to kill.
You said it, man - they clinched the decider! Thompson having a good day having won his singles match against Mannarino on home soil. He's through to the qf's in both categories.

Skupski / Venus take out the number 1 seeds - in a well contested straight sets win. Good job by them.
Fils / Mpetshi-Perricard likely to have withdrawn due to Fils also playing the singles today, but he lost - lose/lose outcome for him. Pleased to see Glasspool / Pavlacek through. Cilic / Dodig couldn't do it but gave but put up a strong fight - still have the urge!

Some interesting qf matches beckon!

I watched most of the tiebreaks plus the Salisbury/Rojer match (they weren't injured). TBs had a lot of mini breaks changing hands. Super tight matches, one lucky return here or there decided the match. Must be nerve racking for the players. I don't have a horse in this race, so I'm enjoying all of it. Can't wait to see the new match ups for next year.

Patten, Purcell, and Thompson all played pretty sloppy matches this round for their standards, making tomorrow’s QF rematch of the Wimbledon final to handicap. I have it as pick’em. Vegas has Purcell/Thompson as 56% favorites.

Wacthing Bopanna/Ebden and Koolhoff/Mektic. The Dutch are up a set via a well fought tb, 13-15, so a closely contested match. Going with serve in the 2nd. Not sure what Bop was complaining to umpire about at the beginning of the set, but liked the umpire's (Louis Boucharinc) demeanour/reply.

Man, the scheduling is daft. Thompson plays an evening singles match and then an evening doubles.

I’m nervous about the late start. Sometimes the conditions are different at night when it can get really cool dry.

Purcell/Thompson are the highest seed remaining at #4 and they’ve only played 1 match. That said, Koolhof/Mektic have been a lot better than Ebden/Bopanna over the last several months, so today’s match wasn’t actually an upset.

Skup has been a wrecking ball this tourney so far, with the conditions suiting his unconventional heavyweight style. He’s up next against Galloway, who’s been rejuvenated by the switch back to deuce. Both players can be shaky on serve. Expecting one or both to be broken this match.

Odds for H/P vs P/T have shifted from 56% to 61% in last few hours. I don’t like this, because when the odds move, it usually means the courtsider sharps are seeing something new from watching the practices in the conditions.

Heh, heh, man-your instincts were right, H/P put up a tight decider after losing the 2nd comprehensively, but P/T took it by the skin of their teeth! Good contest, pleased they got through, especially as JTlost the singles match. They play Glasspool / Pavlasek in the sf.

I also watched Venus/Skupski earlier, who had a much more routine win, looking solid. They'll play Koolhof / Mektic in the sf.

Wow, Koolhof/mektic had a relatively easy time (1 and 2 breaks) w Skupski/Venus, who were playing well. I really enjoy watching Koolhof. I'm sad to see him retire.

On the other half of the draw, I watched the first set tiebreak and some of the second set of the heliovaara/Patten and Purcell/Thompson match. Purcell is really impressive. His serve doesn't look big, but opponents really seem to struggle w it. One downside (other than declaring he hates dubs), is his negative attitude whenever his team loses a point (evident nearly every point).

Watched the first sf too, and Koolhof / Metic were impressive, stifling Venus / Skupski in the 1st and remaining focused in the 2nd. Disappointed that V/S couldn't make it a better contest.
Yah man, Purcell is a character- you'd have to be to wear those shorts! Lool! I have a spot for JT, his laid back demeanour and often looks as though he's enjoying it out there. Hope they get through.
