2024 Doubles talk

Damn and blast, man! My 2 picks both shown the door in the sf's. Both in straights too. Still, at least Thompson/Purcell qualified for the WTF.

Koolhof/Mektic are my pick for the title (I like them), which is probably the kiss of death but you never know!

Conditions in the air in Paris are unusually dry, which turned the draw upside down.

I’m crossing my fingers hoping order is restored in Turin. Based on last year’s chalky results, that’s a good bet.

Heh, heh, if by that you mean our respective favourites should do well, then, yah man!

It seems my pick for the title was the kiss of life - really pleased to see Koolhof/Mektic prevail in a well contested encounter. Glasspool/Pavlasek were dominant earlier in the match and up to the 6th game in the 2nd set, up a break point in the 7th but could not convert. Got broken in a superb 8th game by K/M who then held to love to clinch the 2nd. They went on to win the decider comfortably. Entertaining match-well done to K/M, but G/P had a good run too.

Who do you want to see win?

The Mike Bryan group is stacked with teams who've historically been really good indoor teams. I wouldn't be surprised if any of those 4 teams wins the whole thing.

Trying to set aside my bias, the 4 best players in the world right now for the conditions, are probably Pavic, Koolhof, Purcell, and Patten. I'd say those guys' teams are the 4 favorites, but 3 of them are in the same group, with the 4th member of the group the team that made the final last year. Gonna be tough just to escape the RR in that group.

Top preference is Granollers/Zeballos. Then Koolhof/Mektic. I’d like to see Koolhof retire with another big title. He’s been killing it.
Just realized that Granollers has reached at least the semi in slams 15! times. And yet still slamless.

He’s actually been a semi-reaching machine the last several years. He does have 1 atp finals title.

They should've won wimby 2 years ago, but the chair ump blew a call at a critical point. She claimed zeballos reached over the net on a routine put away. They tried to challenge, but couldn't. 2 point switch, I think they ended up getting broken, instead of holding.

I just watched the Paris final today. Koolio was easily the best player on the court.

Yep, Koolhof ending it with another big title would be welcome, and if it can be said in a competitive context, seems appropriate. Still, would like to see my dude Thompson lifting the trophy .........

Man, Tennis TV didn't show the Belgrade dubs final, silly twits. Dodig/Mansouri (ID is another veteran at 39) took the 1st, and Peers/Murray fought to take the 2nd to a tb, would have liked to see it. They took the tb 7-5, and the decider 11-9 to clinch it.

I always thought Koolhof was a great player, punching above his weight, when I saw him w Skupski. Bummed to hear that they were splitting up, after a great year last year. Then I read that he was retiring and used to play w mektic 4 years ago.

Not sure why tennis tv only shows dubs if it’s 500 or above.

Making it a family event tomorrow with the doubles RR being shown on Tennis Channel. Will be the first time I’ve had a chance to watch my guy on live tv.

Will be watching with my dad tomorrow morning 9am Seattle time. My dad is almost 84. He loaned me some money 2 years ago to help me launch my pro racquet customization biz, and following my first client’s match scores each day from ITF to challengers to atp main tour to slam contention has given my dad something fun to keep getting out of bed for.

Nice, man - watching with your dad. Enjoyed your description of his support for you / enjoyment it gives him. Hope you both enjoyed the 1st dubs match....

I'm pleased to see my boys through, and with an excellent performance. Close 1st set but they took the bull by the horns in the 2nd and won by breaking their opponents. This is a good summary:

A 23:11 receiver points won ratio with 14:4 second set is a one-sided beatdown not as close as the score. I already considered your boys the favorites for the title, and this makes me double down on that opinion.

Enjoy the stats. Yah man, dudes looked settled in their debut at the finals, hope it continues but there's a long way to go ....

Watched the 2nd set of Patten/Heliovaara (also their debut) and Granollers/Zeballos - P/H served well and payed with conviction, getting an early break in the 3rd game. I agree with the comms - an assured performance.

G/Z play T/P on Tuesday, and P/H, K/M.

In the rematch of Wimby semi, I expect #5 P/T repeat the feat and get by #2 G/Z in straights.

Expected result with Bolelli / Vavasoori getting through, but Kraweitz / Putz gave Pavic / Arevalo short shrift! The number 1 seeds beaten in straights.

Gooooooo! Thompson/Purcell tomorrow.

Gooooooo! Thompson/Purcell tomorrow.

They swapped the matchups for Mike Bryan group round 2. P/T will take on my boys in a rematch of the Wimbledon final.

I can see why they did the schedule swap. If they hadn’t, there would be a significant risk of ending up with 2 teams at 2-0 and two teams at 0-2, rendering the third round meaningless with respect to advancement.

I would not be surprised if the loser of tomorrow’s match between the two most recent slam champs gets a chance at revenge a few days later in the final. This is the best doubles rivalry of 2024.

The first two matches of the Bob Bryan group were lop-sided affairs.

Bolelli/Vavassori laid down a whipping of Bopanna/Ebden winning receiver points in 22:5 ratio!

This signals that the Italians may be force to be reckoned with, especially with the home crowd behind them.

Purcell being in top doesn't surprise me. His serve is surprisingly effective. He gets many free points.

Bopanna being near the bottom is surprising. He has a big serve. That's his main strength.

On highlights it looked like Bopanna’s 2nd serve was sitting up short and juicy.

I just watched some of the Pavic match. I have a lot of respect for his game, but man that dodgy fh volley is a liability in the indoor conditions. He was hemorrhaging service points today.

Bopanna has unfortunately dropped immensely which isn't surprising as he's now 44. Even when he was doing very well with Ebden with a slam, Masters and each getting to #1, he was the weaker link. Retirement will be on the cards soon for him. His movement is subpar and even I was surprised to see how well they did as a pairing. But 2025 needs to be fresh and it's time for Rohan to bow out and Ebden to look elsewhere.

This one felt like a heavyweight bout.

Purcell was the best player on the court in the early going. But my guys held on and pulled off the first set steal. A rare implosion on serve by Purcell, and a mild apparent ankle injury, then Patten returning the favor. Next was JT’s turn. Heliovaara was the clear weak link in the first set, but he got stronger late and ironically he was the only guy who finished the contest without being broken.

Hope Max is ok.

Match +/- stats:
Patten +4
Heliovaara +2
Purcell -1
Thompson -5

I will selfishly be rooting for G/Z today. If Granollers/Zeballos can win at least 1 set today, it would guarantee Patten/Heliovaara a berth in the semi’s.

H/P have just become the first team to clinch a berth in the semifinal. :)

If G/Z go on to win today, K/M would become the first team to be eliminated, and it would lock in H/P as the top seed out of the MB group.

Yah man - nice for your boys. Mind you, I felt a tad miffed that they got the better of my boys today - ya! Boo! :)

G/M looking more incisive, K/M more subdued. Fight! I say - fight!

Heh, heh, K/M did it! By the skin of their teeth! Not my favourites here but pleased for them. Nothing against them, but never warmed to Z/G.
I believe K/M are still in play to snag the top seed from the group (with a win and a G/Z win over P/T).

P/T still in good position to advance if they can take care of business tomorrow against G/Z.

G/Z still alive but need a win and help from H/P.

Koolhof/Mektic were probably the most accomplished indoor team in 2024, and they demonstrated today that if you don’t stick a fork in them in straights, you will likely regret it.

I believe they still need an assist from G/Z over P/T to advance, but if they do advance, they will be dangerous.

Woeful by Bopanna/Ebden.

I don’t know why Rohan won’t let the ball bounce first before hitting a shot. Several times he could have hit a winner had the ball bounced and he evaluated where to hit cross court, instead he would take it on the fly and either send it long or out or straight to the opponent. After giving the break back in the first set it looked very much over. Hope Ebden splits from him in 2025 cause this is just hard to watch as a pairing. Be happy they accomplished what they did but know when to call it.

It's clear that they're not going to stay together, after Bopanna played w Dodig and Ebden w Salisbury in one of the indoor tournaments in Asia (Shanghai?). Then, they paired back up in Paris, most likely bc they almost lost their spot in turin.

Bopanna looks like he’s pushing 60 with his “doubles body”, and Ebden has lost some of the agility that used to be a strength.

I’ve been charting +/- every match these atp finals to get an idea of who the best players are in the conditions, and I had Ebden at -6 and Bopanna at -1 today. Arévalo at +8 and Pavic at -1. Arévalo never looks like the cleanest technique player, but he was the best player on the court today, with no issues on his serve and picking up the slack in returns in the second set when Pavic faded.

This result flips Ebden into the basement of my +/- rankings for the tourney.
