Rune takes the first against Arnaldi. Not a good match for both of them.. a lot of balls dumped into the net, weird... it's almost like they are playing with wet balls.
Serve speeds are also unusually low.. but that could be just the radar setup.

They said the balls were heavier, I think. Med should be happy.

Nah, terrible return of serve on that wing. Most of the current NA lot have better ones, even - sorry - FAA.

Return of serve, I'll give you. Although not convinced FAA has a better one (on backhand side)

But he can control the rallies with it, which is impressive.

I love Paris in the fall! ......... always brings some surprises. Maybe Popyrin will have another deep run.
Interesting take - the younger players who have done well recently in the mix too. Draper through in straights/ Shelton needing 3 but prevails.
Watched Carlitos & Jarry, and despite the (almost) obligatory walkabout by the kid in the 1st set, he came through 7-5, avoiding a tb, comfortably taking the 2nd 6-1.
Tsitsipas through in straights as is De Minaur.
Ruud/Thompson playing a closely contested match in the 1st set.

Beating a pretty decent Jarry indoors on a court faster than Turin. Good signs.
Yah, man, well observed. Given how depleted Carlitos seemed tail end of the 2023 season, the signs are indeed good. Liked his post match interview with the ATP, in which he described the courts as playing very fast.

Tomorrow has some potentially well contested matches, including Bublik / Rune, Mpetshi - Pericard / Khachanov , Draper /Fritz, Cazaux / Shelton.

The 2024 Paris Masters is setting a significant record: the courts were the fastest in the last decade on the ATP circuit, confirming the feelings expressed by Carlos Alcaraz during training when he commented that "the courts are very, very fast".

The data provided by TennisTV confirms this: the Parisian tournament reached a CPI (Court Pace Index) of 45.5 points, exceeding the threshold of 45 points which marks the start of the fastest category. It is an unprecedented figure in the last ten years on the ATP circuit, where the previous record belonged to the 2016 Shanghai tournament with 44.4 points.

2024 marked a reversal of the trend compared to previous years. If previously slower playing conditions were favored to encourage baseline exchanges, this year there has been a general increase in speed in hard court tournaments. A significant example is Cincinnati, the second fastest tournament this year with a CPI of 42.5 points, which recorded an increase of 25% compared to the previous edition.

The explanation for this acceleration could lie in the characteristics of the balls. Since 2023, many tennis players have complained that most of the balls used on the tour are too slow, tend to swell during play and are difficult to control. As revealed in a private conversation with Punto de Break, the circuit tends to balance these factors to ensure the fluidity of the game.

With a CPI of 45.5 points, the conditions of the Paris Masters 2024 promise to be particular and could favor some players over others. It will be interesting to see who can take full advantage of this record speed.

We are seeing two things. Players who should have booked their place in Turin are falling like ninepins viz. Rublev, Rudd, Paul. Clearly the pressure got to them.
As a result Fritz have qualified without playing a match.
Players who were behind i.e below top 10 are playing really well. They have nothing to lose. Eg tsitpitas, rune, fils.

As for a winner, we should get a new winner finally unless kachanpv or rune magically wins it again

Currently, there are 8 players "competing" for the last 3 spots at ATP final including Draper, we may have to wait for Metz/Belgrade to find out.

Ruud is already listed in Metz. Rublev might jump in too. if the final decision is after Metz/belgrade final then do selected players have any time to fly to turin and then play their matches. Turin will start on Sunday only

Glad to see some fast courts and real variation. It was getting painful to watch everything become the same speed, Paris has been a breath of fresh air.

Looking forward to a lot of tiebreaks and quick points!

I'm not saying I don't like the surface, just that servebots bore me.

Been watching lots of Paris and I enjoy the quicker points and variety (I am a Alcaraz fan after all).

Yes, I'm not a big Alcaraz fan, so it's nice to see something different. GMP is ok so far, for a servebot.

Pretty much the bottom half of the top 10 - Ruud, Rublev, de Minaur...
I think De Minaur had a good year relative to his abilities, Dimitrov also but outside of those two and Zverev it's been a rough year for everybody in the top 10 outside of Sinnerazovic and even Djokovic had a rough year relative to his usual standard. Tennis is in a big time transition phase, somebody needs to step up outside of Sinneraz.

Yes, they need resets for different reasons. De Minaur appeared to be carrying an injury in his last tournament, although perhaps it wasn't too bad. Ruud and Rublev have kind of lost the plot.

Dimitrov is the exception.
