Watched the womens final on replay today.
Great match.
Very entertaining.
If you've not watched it, I can highly recommend it.
Even if you know the result.

What a way to end it all!

so they broke up (announced) a week before Olympic. Talk about commitment surpass personal stuff!
Yeah, sorry. I hadn't read that they had broken up, but maybe they are back together now?

Well done to Errani / Paolini. I can't say I'm a particularly big fan of Errani, but still that's a wonderful achievement, to add an Olympic gold medal (for me definitely the biggest title in doubles tennis ahead of any of the majors) to her successes in all 4 majors, the Italian Open which of course is very important for her etc.

I'm even more delighted for Paolini though, on the back of the summer she has had.
Yes, I'm extremely happy for Paolini!

Yes, I'm extremely happy for Paolini!
Me too. I just watched the match. It's crazy how little she comes into net. I know modern doubles often has players staying back more. But she often even doesn't come in off of strong shots where her and Errani would more often than not be getting a fairly weak reply. Regardless, fantastic job. What a year. Happy for Errani too. What a career capper - though she might be around for a while in doubles.

lol, how much Navarro paid you to lie here? but I guess it doesn't really matter since we can't hear anything, the nice girl Navorro was actually congratulating Zheng.
Ok, I'm not sure where you are from, and/or what your native language is, but that isn't what we call "making a scene." That was making a comment to Zheng at net, which was likely something negative due to the head shaking, but that's it. She didn't draw it out, continue talking to her after the handshake, or anything that would actually warrant "making a scene."

Apparently Vekic in her Croatian interview referenced Zheng's stalling when serving due to crowd movement/noise. She then went on to say that there are "controversial stories" about Zheng but didn't go into them... What is it with these players and making tongue in cheek references about others? Bring the tea or keep it to yourself.
Um, that's not "tongue in check." Anyway, she said what she felt she needed to say. Apparently Zheng is rubbing quite a few players the wrong way, and now they are speaking out on it. I don't think there is anything wrong with that, and I think most fans like to know what goes on behind the scenes. It helps make the sport more interesting, and we can certainly use some rivalries on the women's side.

Sounds like jealous petty women saying petty things about Zheng's recent success.
Yeah, no. Neither Vekic nor Navarro are known for being bad sports, complaining, or saying things like this about other players. If both of them said something, I think there must be something to it.

I think it's totally unfair to invite uninformed criticism toward Zheng and to try and create this atmosphere around her that she portrays a false appearance to the cameras and acts totally differently in private. I do wonder how much of it is cultural differences and the fact Zheng is young and highly motivated/believes in herself in a way maybe opponents are envious of.
What is unfair? If those players saw something, they saw something. And, again, based on her on court behavior and demeanor, it's not hard to believe.

As for cultural differences, she has been traveling the world for quite a while now, and she has been since a relatively young age, so she has had plenty of time to open her eyes to other ways of doing things.

Empty whimper (exactly what are their accusations?) by two sore losers are discussed in bunch of messages and a poster that at times had some common sense is now declaring his culture is better than all the others and you are a "skunk" even if there is a doubt you are not strictly acting by it norms??? I save my time from attacking from various angles open... you know, actually knowing something about other cultures and then checking the mirror would probably help a lot! :)

Please no more of that BS. The best player won and some people are not happy about it, but that's how it always is.

if you are not sure, then you should keep your big mouth shut, and frankly where I am from or you are form and what my native language is or yours have no place in the discussion. If you are implying certain nationality or certain language give you an upper hand, then you are a nasty racist, you should be ashamed of yourself. And one more thing, speak for yourself only, you don't speak for other people, so stop using "we", use "I" instead.

It's not BS, it's racial microaggressions turning into attack. Since Zheng is from a different culture and she speaks a different language, so the "issues" are obviously coming from her side not from other people, even though we don't know at all about what those "issues" are. If you don't believe me, just check certain posts in this thread, they already made up their minds, it's her culture and language that caused the "issues" here, she is the one to blame! And for those people, you can bet they always assume the black people are the aggressors, that's just how they view "other" people, Asians are culturally different and Blacks are violence prone.

Wow, this has taken a turn for the... interesting. Perhaps I need to clarify a few things...

Whoa, what? When and where did I declare that "my culture" (whatever that may mean or be) is better than all the others? If anything, I have done the exact opposite (or did you miss the part where I criticized the Americans complaining about a lack of cold drinking water?)

And I'm not totally sure why we are talking about cultures at all. This is an individual player, in an individual sport. If Zheng has some issues, it's mostly on her. Someone else mentioned it might have something to do with her background, but that seems completely unfounded, as there are a few players from the same country/region that are very well liked.

As for her win, I couldn't care less. The Olympics is a strange event, and the roll of the dice came up in her favor this time. Monica Puig won an Olympic gold, ffs, which tells you everything you need to know about it.

Wow, telling me to keep my "big mouth shut" when you are completely confused about what is even being said? That's not a great approach.

But yes, this is an English language forum, so that is the default language we all chose to communicate in. A pretty simple concept, no? And in the English language, the expression "making a scene" has a pretty clear meaning. A meaning that you either failed to understand, or which you decided to apply in a completely inappropriate situation. Why you did that is anyone's guess at this point, but I was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt that this might not be your native language, hence the understandable mistake. I've posted on forums in a language that was not my own, and there is always a learning process when it comes to common expressions in casual exchanges. If I made a mistake like that, I wouldn't mind in the slightest someone pointing it out and correcting it. I'd actually appreciate it.

So no, there is no nationality or language that "gives you the upper hand." I have no idea where you got that from. I'm simply pointing out the undeniable fact that this is forum that principally uses the English language. To claim that pointing that out is somehow "racist" is hilarious. There is only one person in here that needs to be ashamed of themself.

And doubling down here is as pathetic as it is hilarious. A jerk is a jerk, no matter where they are from, and no matter what language they speak. And you know what? The world is full of jerks. If Zheng is a jerk, it's because of who she is as a person, not the flag next to her name or the language she speaks.

None of those players criticized her for her background or anything even remotely close. Doing things like holding up play is about tennis. The international sport of tennis. Poor sportsmanship is poor sportsmanship, no matter where you are from. Nobody in here mentioned her culture but YOU, so stop with the nonsense. Then bringing race and certain distinctly American racial issues into this is just beyond ridiculous...
