Don´t understand, If the ball was out, why is it a question i Coco completed the swing or not. Why didn´t Coco get the point?
Vekic’ ball was in. Vekic couldn’t lose that point. The best that Coco could hope for was a replay of the point.

Coco hit the ball up after a correction was called. It all happened so fast … I think what actually happened was that Coco saw it as going out and was ready to challenge as soon as she swatted the ball up. And then she got the call she wanted to then have it corrected. The ball was called out then corrected in - in a millisecond.
It all happened so fast that if you weren’t watching it on tv with replay you had to think Coco was right.
But then Donna kinda got jeered. And she said out loud “it’s not my fault” (what happened with the call).
It’s one of those split second moments that’s hard on everyone. But apparently the umpire was right to do what he did. Just bad luck.

From my perspective, Coco was as close to being in the right/correct as you can be while also being wrong.

Kerber, Woz, Svitolina … they’re the last of that group of top tier players who won their matches mostly by being backboards/super defensive.
I think of Aga and Jankovic as well who made it to major finals by drawing errors from their opponents who were in that group.
Now, the WTA is a power struggle.
I wouldn’t put Swiatek in the category of super defensive like those other ladies. I think of her game as closer to what Justine did on clay while also taking a couple hard court majors.
Paolini packs quite a punch, too.

Thank you!
What has the outcome been if Vekic ball was out, the call been late and Coco hit the net (before the call). Should it been Cocos point then, or should it still been Vekic point because late call?

It's harsh but it's only one point, and the score finished 7-6 6-2. I don't think arguing with the umpire extensively is worth it. You're just draining your own emotional energy.

I've been looking for Navarro-Zheng highlights but they seem to have decided not to publish any.

Paris Olympics QF’s:

(1) Swiatek v (8) Collins
Kerber v (6) Zheng

(9) Krejcikova v Schmiedlova
(12) Kostyuk v (13) Vekic
What are your predictions? Seems like Zheng may be the only player capable of taking a set off Swiatek. Krejcikova has played too many long matches and is still in doubles(and has only played one match so far! very tight schedule these next few days)

Swiatek
Kerber
Krejcikova
Vekic

Zheng was lucky to get past Navarro while Angie has looked solid but I think that prediction may be more of a hope than reality.

Her choice of words was unfortunate - "I'm the only one this happens to, maybe someday I will be treated fairly etc." I can see where people on twitter will take that line of thought to...

Coco herself already took it there by mentioning Serena. Can't blame twitter people for this.

"I feel like I’m getting cheated on constantly in this game, it happens to me, it happened to Serena [Williams]"

Kerber breaks to start the match. Looking very good.

Funny how the weight comes off your shoulders when you announce you'll be retiring.
And all that after never being good on clay for whatever reason. If she continues like that, she might have a good chance for Bronze. I think Iga is untouchable though, and despite being German I like Iga more anyway.

It is funny Kerber was never good at the big clay tournaments like the French Open because she honestly was decent on clay. A 2x Stuttgart champion (one of the hardest 500 titles to win on tour), 4 clay titles in total. Twice a QFist at the French, 10 top 10 wins.

Schmiedlova takes the first set 6-4 over Krejcikova.

This is just bizarre to be honest. Anna Karolina peaking at the perfect time. Hasn't done much lately, won a 125k on clay in Parma in may and made a SF at a 250 in Palermo and that's about it. Ranked #67 in the world.

Now a set from possibly making the SF of the Olympic games with a 3/4 shot at an Olympic medal...

Before this tournament, Schmiedlova had only ever recorded one top 10 win in her career.

It was over Roberta Vinci, funnily enough at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

She's defeated #5 Paolini at the 2024 Olympics and now facing defeating the Wimbledon champ and #10 Krejcikova.

So we had unseeded Puig in Rio 2016 in the SF (went on to win gold)

We had unseeded Vondrousova in Tokyo 2020 in the SF (went on to win silver)

Now we have unseeded Schmiedlova in Paris 2024 in the SF. Let's see how she goes.

I miss the 2012 Olympics, they were just so stacked.

QF's were:
(1) Azarenka v (7) Kerber
(4) Serena v (8) Wozniacki
Clijsters v (3) Sharapova
(6) Kvitova v (14) Kirilenko

Azarenka was the AO champ.
Sharapova was the French champ.
Serena was the Wimbledon champ.
Kvitova was the WTA Finals champ.
Clijsters had won the AO the previous year.
Woz was #1 earlier that year.
Kerber was the USO & Wimbledon SFist
And then Kirilenko lol.

Gold to Serena
Silver to Sharapova
Bronze to Vika

No disrespect to Schmiedlova and maybe she'll have the Puig type run, but you'd have to think that the winner of this Kerber/Zheng match will likely be the bronze medallist.

Obviously a few things would have to happen but i'd rate Vekic or Kostyuk to defeat Schmiedlova in their SF thus sending Schmiedlova to the Bronze match. And i'm very much rating Swiatek (or Collins) to beat either Kerber or Zheng thus sending them to the Bronze match. And I think Kerber/Zheng are far better than Schmiedlova in that hypothetical.

Krejcikova was hopeless, i'm not going to give credit to Schmiedlova for playing lights out in that match because she didn't. Krejcikova was hideous.

Stats of that Krejcikova/Schmiedlova match:

Krejcikova:
Aces: 1
Double faults: 5
1st serve: 51%
Winners: 16
Unforced Errors: 32

Schmiedlova:
Aces: 3
Double faults: 0
1st serve: 64%
Winners: 16
Unforced Errors: 15

Decent by Schmiedlova don't get me wrong but those are just ugly, ugly stats by Krejcikova.

I take everything back. Zheng serving 40% first serves throughout the match. Nobody deserves to win serving like that. Zheng not a single on of 5 BPs saved..absolutely deserves the loss

Love Angie Kerber, this match was kind of there for the taking and would be a little heartbreaking to lose, but... The amount of moonballs she has tossed up in this match seems beyond anything I can remember from her, even as I acknowledge it has long been a trademark of hers.

If that's all you got left then retirement might be for the best. Zheng has done great to deal with it/give some back.

Very happy that Angie got some wins on the way out, but Qinwen deserved that. What a freakin' epic.

No one's watching Collins? Forced a third against Iga. Collins had been very quiet during points, not even a subtle celebration after a winner. That is until the last few points nearing 2nd set set-point when she started getting pumped up.

Everyone know that in the end swiatek will win gold
