I'm somewhat surprised that Iga lost - mainly because the match was on clay - but not totally surprised. Zheng can bang and play at a high level.

Tell that to her mom. You'd probably consider her 2020 preparation as a danger to humanity as well.

Anyway, she's an obnoxious person, so even as a Pole I can't root for her. Just a shame that Zheng added that extra moonballing near the end. Lot of good, clean hitting, though it wasn't a pretty match.

I think it depends. I know that Hurkacz couldn't care less, but with Iga there's also the case of her father being a former olympian, so maybe some extra pressure from there? She's been hyped to the moon here and 90% of her "fanbase" knows sh*t about tennis. Tennis commentary in Poland is awful (they fired the only good commentator because she was very technical and a woman, so 2 things people here hate), so it's difficult for the audience to learn anything. They took it to the next level here.

As soon as Iga lost they started saying that it's alright, as she can still get the bronze. When the interviewer said that to her she straight up started crying (can't blame her).

Djokovic played his best team tennis in ATP Cup of all places and with him and Iga now it seems more like a schedule issue if anything (sample data is laughably small compared to other events).
Qrd? Something about not thanking her mom?

If you play doubles and/or enjoy watching some doubles, try to watch some of the Errani/Paolini matches. The duo usually put up a good show. Paolini hit some amazing winners from the baseline during rallies - sometimes whizzing near her partner's head, to hit unexpected cross court winners passing the opposing net players on the deuce side. Quite spectacular points to watch.

I stopped watching Iga/Zheng match when Iga was leading 3-0 in 2nd set, thinking that was it for Zheng. Iga is going to go to 3rd and win it because Zheng would start making errors. This is for sure one of Zheng's best win considering she has lost 6x before and it's against the #1 ranked player.

Come on, that you like Navarro shouldn´t affect your judgement to this extent.
Did she make the comment on court? As far as I know, she didn't. Making a scene would have been saying something like that on the court, to her face (sort of like Collins did), and then drawing attention to it.

So yes, whatever you think about her comments, they were after the fact and away from the spotlight, so it wasn't a "scene."

As for the comments, in my opinion they are confusing at best. Clearly something must have happened that made her say that, but we might never know what it is. I hardly think Navarro would just randomly bring it up for no reason. She isn't known to be a sore loser or anything like that, and I can see how Zheng can bother people.

Wow, massive upset in the doubles.

Defending champs and #2 seeds Krejcikova/Siniakova lose in straight sets to Andreeva/Shnaider.
This is really quite shocking. I thought it would be an easy win for them, since neither Andreeva nor Schnaider are doubles specialists, and Andreeva still seems to have some mental lapses under pressure.

Did you watch it?

Ha, I like trying that shot myself in doubles (hitting over/around my partner to surprise the other team), but I usually hit huge loops over my partners head so I don't risk hitting them, and of course that makes it way less effective.

Nah I was asleep, woke up expecting it to be an easy win for the Czech duo, very surprised.

I think Errani/Paolini would have to be the favourites for gold now. I really really like Paolini but can't stand Errani so i'm torn.

She cited stomach muscle problems stemming from all-over cramping due to no cold water being provided to the players in her last match.
I honestly don't understand the whole cold water thing, and I'm American! Water is water, and it still works to hydrate you no matter the temperature (so long as it isn't boiling or hot enough to burn your throat).

(I will say that one time I was playing soccer in Germany as a kid, on a super hot day, and couldn't wait to take a long drink from a fresh bottle of water at halftime... only to take a big gulp and realize it was carbonated! That threw me for a loop, but that's a little different...)

Me too. But it's a trend this QF round, with Bucsa/Sorribes beating specialists Kichenok sisters, and Muchova/Noskova beating Hsieh/Tsao - although you could say Hsieh's pairings with Mertens, Wang Xinyu (and in the past, Peng) are more authentically specialists.

This is the difference with weekend warrior tennis. In pro doubles, the net players will automatically duck/stay low when there's ball in the middle area of the baseline to give the baseline player wider field of angle to hit on both left and side corners. Discuss with your partner to stay low in that situation.

Vekic takes the first set 6-4.

Would be very happy to see Zheng v Donna in the Olympic final.

Also Swiatek should then be able to easily handle Schmiedlova in the Bronze medal match and land Poland their first Olympic medal in tennis.

Swiatek? If she was the person you were referring to, she's never appeared to be a bright star in the eyes of a large number of tennis fans, or those beyond the sport.
No, this is supposedly what Emma Navarro said to Zheng at the end of their match the other day. Since then she ended the career of one legend in an absolute epic, and then beat the queen on her court.

2024 has had some nice moments so far:

Arrival of Zheng in the top 10 and big results in AO final and Olympic final
Paolini's top 10 arrival and 2x GS finals
Donna finally getting her flowers with Wimbledon SF and now Olympic final

There are others but I am super happy with the above .

As for the final... Zheng seems to be more natural on clay (won Palermo the other week) but Donna is on a career hot streak and has experience. Zheng has experience of a GS final but she also seems prone to mental lapses, as can Donna though... Hopefully it's a good match.

Wow. I haven't watched a lot of Vekic' matches from start to finish. It's easier to do when they're only 65 mins long.. but my goodness she deserves a quick match after all the dramatic ones, eh?
She didn't just power through that match.. loved the moonballs to get back into points.. loved the drop shots.. and of course.. the forehand just was hitting every line. Good for you, DV!
At least will have a silver. Probably biggest result of her career. Olympic medals mean a big deal in Croatia.

Respect each and every professional tennis player. To be amongst the top in the world of your profession is something very few people are able to achieve and experience in life. There is nothing like an easy draw or an overrated ranking. Each match is a physical and mental challenge and huge task for both players to try and secure the victory. So many arm chair tennis experts in here making ridiculous statements about elite world class athletes.

Nicely said. She's been my favorite WTA player for quite a while. She's emotional but carries herself in an elegant way. Always a friendly smile and handshake, win or lose. She's also attractive in a mature way.

I think I mentioned it on the thread in the GPPD that Swiatek looked genuinely shocked and caught off guard when Collins said it to her.

Iga isn't charismatic, she's shy, she doesn't want to hurt people, to be targeted the way she was by Danielle was terrible, especially after it was Dani who was the rude one in the match was a surprise.

Anyway, full credit to Zheng for that match.

I watched both clips, unlike Zheng who immediately said something back and shrugged it off, Iga was totally in shock, she was stunned and speechless after Collins walked away. Even worse Collins later confronted her again in the locker room, this is no longer being salty, it's verbal abuse and bully!

Paris 2024 Mixed Doubles Final:

Siniakova/Machac v Wang/Zhang

Not expected.
Happy for the Chinese but i'm sad cause it feels like it should be my Aussies Perez/Ebden who had 2 match points in that QF against them :(

Kudos to both teams, Siniakova/Machac would have to be the favourites having gotten through all 3 of their matches in straights while the Chinese have gone to a super breaker in all 3 of their matches. Also, Siniakova with a lot of experience, has won gold in ladies doubles before and also won 9 doubles slams.

I personally prefer it when underdogs win the Olympics, as opposed to the big name favourites adding yet another big title to their already huge collections. Puig's cinderella run in 2016 beating Muguruza, Kvitova and Kerber is by far my favourite Olympic tennis memory on the women's side, including the fact that it was a nice achievement for her just to qualify for the tournament in the first place.

I don't particularly mind either way who wins this final.

Swiatek up 5-2 over Schmiedlova in the Bronze match.

Both players hitting a fair few errors but Iga doing much better.

I feel both deserve it. Zheng is likely going to become one of the top clay players going forward and she needs a big title to truly stamp her arrival. She made the AO final but she has not won a 1000 or anything notable. Defending Palermo is impressive in that it shows she can be consistent but it's not a big event.

Vekic is finally getting her flowers. She's always been dangerous but never seemed to be able to keep the momentum up until Wimbledon this year. She was unlucky not to make the final and who knows she may well have had the game to beat Krejcikova in that final, but a SF result was still fantastic. To make the final here on clay and guarantee a medal is amazing, and if she gets gold it will likely be the pinnacle of her career. Having said that, she hits a big ball and you never know with the USO and AO upcoming if it could shift her mentality and allow her to enter a new tier of self belief. It's common in women's tennis that some players hit their peak around the age of 30 after all the battle scars - they're so experienced and know what it takes to improve the next time.

Swiatek absolutely steamrolling. Great to see her rebound from the SF loss and the podium will look more consistent with her on it. Zheng has been one of the players you could believe beating Iga at RG at some point, so as surprising as it was it isn't a dreadful loss like it seems. She was pushed hard by Muchova last year and Osaka nearly beat her this year - Iga will likely win many more RGs but she is not as much of a lock in as Rafa was in the men's side of the RG draw.

Congratulations to Swiatek for her Bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

I do wonder whether her status as essentially the heavy favourite at every RG event will become harder for her to carry - to essentially be expected to straight sets everyone and win the title every year could become tricky and we all know some players start to overthink as they progress in their careers. Here playing the Olympics at RG having just won the French Open must have been a lot of pressure all around including from herself. It will be interesting to see how she does in LA. The next Olympics are so far off so much can happen injury wise in a career there's actually no given she will have an Olympics appearance beyond LA (not that that's a given for anyone).

I really hope she won gold someday. Even not from Women singles. Iconic win gold and slam in Ws.
