Happy for the Chinese but i'm sad cause it feels like it should be my Aussies Perez/Ebden who had 2 match points in that QF against them :(

Kudos to both teams, Siniakova/Machac would have to be the favourites having gotten through all 3 of their matches in straights while the Chinese have gone to a super breaker in all 3 of their matches. Also, Siniakova with a lot of experience, has won gold in ladies doubles before and also won 9 doubles slams.
Siniakova is also playing with her fiance for some extra incentive.

This will remain Iga's best-ever chance at a gold medal. She will probably never sniff the gold in the future.
You act like Swiatek can't play on anything but clay, but she's won the U.S. Open and six 1000s on hard. That's more hard-court 1000 titles than Sabalenka, Rybakina, and Gauff have combined.

Canadians Gabriela Dabrowski/Felix Auger Aliassime win the Mixed Doubles Bronze.
That's how you bounce back from a singles loss to get your compatriot the medal they deserve! Great result for FAA and Dabrowski. FAA now has a shot at a 2nd Bronze in the singles vs Musetti. At least if he doesn't win he's going home with a medal nonetheless!

I know these Olympics don't mean much to the average TTW'er.
But the reactions of many of the players have been simply priceless
after winning their matches.

Take for example Vekic's win yesterday over Schmedly.
Despite a routine victory for Donna she broke out into sheer joy
and exhilaration.
I don't think I had ever seen her smile so broadly before. :)

still the best chance tho. No Rybakina, Sabalenka, all her nemesis lose early and (maybe because of expectations, she said so herself) she lost for the first time to Zheng.

4 years is a long time, if it's slow HC like IW in LA she has good chance baring injury free and the youngsters do not evolve to crazy level.

If Vekic can somehow win Gold that would be just... stunning. A real career milestone.
And when you're in the Olympic village watching everyone celebrate their medals - there must so much inspiration to join them. Especially, since every country pretty much is assigned their own building. So the celebrations in your own little bubble with your team-mates. Wow.
I really want this for Donna.
That said... for a Chinese athlete there is nothing more important than an Olympic Gold. If Zheng wins it could be not just life-changing for her but propel the sport in a way that Li Na could only take so far.
I love the Olympics. I never understood why tennis folks were so non-chalant about it. And then you realize.. No prize money (Like pretty much all the other sports at the Olympics) - I'm not sure they even get points. You realize just how privelaged athletes that play in sports with guaranteed prize money outside of sponsorships.
The top 100 players are probably making more money on prize money alone that most of the delegation combined.

I observed the safest choice in Polls is Others, which no one picked this time. :)
Winning pick if vekic gets gold, although more likely that zhenh wins.

It is so weird seing Vekic wearing tank top kit
Why? The weathers too hot for her usual long sleeve covered up shirt. This Olympic outfit looks great, pic below.

Having beaten 1ga, zheng will be hard to stop. She wins this one.
Regardless, Donna vekic should get a gold for rocking that great dress.

Most matches have a "vibe" that may or may not be borne out by statistical analysis afterward. E.g., "He served his opponent off the court," or "She took control at the net." This is based on what you see as you watch, especially in the key games of sets and on the big points. Today, the vibe is Vekic spraying the ball nervously. Actually sort of unpleasant to watch.

Vekic had no serve today. She can't win without it.
Zheng with some gamesmanship in the match. Donna got annoyed. Is there something to the Navarro story?

There are many games and phases in a match and what I described is exactly what was happening at the time.
Saying that someone, who hit 10 more winners in a match, was just hoping for opponents errors is hilarious no matter how you slice it.

Ridiculously defensive and pointless. You take it as though I'm insulting Zheng when I'm merely commenting on tactics she used during a phase of a match.

Why Vekic looked so nervous and her breathing labored? I don't watch her a lot but she seems so damn nervous there, is she always like this?

yeah I saw that too, Zheng was waiting for Vekic to implode in the service game

Apparently Vekic in her Croatian interview referenced Zheng's stalling when serving due to crowd movement/noise. She then went on to say that there are "controversial stories" about Zheng but didn't go into them... What is it with these players and making tongue in cheek references about others? Bring the tea or keep it to yourself.

Sounds like jealous petty women saying petty things about Zheng's recent success.

I think it's totally unfair to invite uninformed criticism toward Zheng and to try and create this atmosphere around her that she portrays a false appearance to the cameras and acts totally differently in private. I do wonder how much of it is cultural differences and the fact Zheng is young and highly motivated/believes in herself in a way maybe opponents are envious of.

That's how you know Zheng has made it and frankly it's not even new in tennis, remember the criticism against Henin, Sharapova, Serena Williams... and recently Swiatek, when you can't beat them on the court, all you left is to throw shades off the court.

Looks like Noskova had a few tears, it's disappointing for her but really they didn't have any chance, the Spanish girls were just too good today.

Noskova was a stand in for Vondrousova. The Czech team did well coming together to form this unexpectedly team. They also got further than Siniakova and Krejcikova which I wouldn't have predicted. Really hope Paolini (and Errani) win the Gold as Paolini deserves a big W after 2x major singles RU finishes this year.

Zheng won her Gold medal in a convincing manner. Vekic has no one to blame--in this case--other than herself.

With that Olympic Gold, it means Sara Errani completes the Career Golden Slam for in the doubles.

Some career!

2013 and 2014 Australian Open champ
2012 French Open champ
2014 Wimbledon champ
2012 US Open champ
2024 Olympic champ

She's just the 7th woman to accomplish it in women's doubles. Joins Shriver, Fernandez, Serena, Venus, Krejcikova and Siniakova.

Errani was the captain here with the tactical strategy, while Paolini held the fort on the baseline. When both were playing back, their opponents were attacking Errani. What a dynamic pairing this Italian duo. Errani is everywhere on the court, her timing on poaching is spot on.

Errani, with all her limitations (serves, pancake overhead), executed everything perfectly. Even on her returns, where she lacked Paolini's power, she returned hard-to-attack/poach deep and high balls - often causing troubles for the inexperienced Andreeva.

That one game with Shnaider's DF might have caused the pair this match.

This was a spectacular Olympic Women's Doubles Final to watch - so was the Men's Singles final, IMO.

Well done to Errani / Paolini. I can't say I'm a particularly big fan of Errani, but still that's a wonderful achievement, to add an Olympic gold medal (for me definitely the biggest title in doubles tennis ahead of any of the majors) to her successes in all 4 majors, the Italian Open which of course is very important for her etc.

I'm even more delighted for Paolini though, on the back of the summer she has had.
