Speaking of Coco Gauff...

Well we are back to square one or ground zero for Gauff.
This is where she won her first and only slam almost a year ago defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the final.

It was a very weird match indeed. The score was 2-6, 6-3, 6-2
The Winners/U.E's tell pretty much the whole tale of that final.
Winners: Gauff: 13 Sab: 25
U.E.'s: Gauff: 19 Sab: 46

Sabalenka was dictating play most of the match.
By play, I mean the outcome of the points.
When Sabalenka was on, she was hitting almost twice as many winners as Gauff.
When Sabalenka was off, she was hitting more than twice as many unforced errors as Gauff (gifting points to her).

Qualies start in a couple of days.

Here's a link to the draw and the poll is now above (as promised).
Don't forget to let us know if you have someone in mind if you chose 'Other'.

As always, pre-tournament, tournament and post-tournament news, information, gossip and comments are all welcome. :)

Prize Money.
OMG, just playing the first round ensures you a paycheck of $100K. Not bad for a day's work. :)

There’s an entire week of tennis to come before the US Open with a 500 in Monterrey and 250 in Cleveland…. You’ve just ignored that and gone straight to the US Open….

And not even a poll?

I think I might do a thread for the US Open with a poll that’s a lot closer to the date instead of using this as our thread.

I wait with the poll because we don't know for sure who will be playing at the moment.

The older sister Fruhvirtova fell to Kiki in 3 sets in an error-ridden match (from both sides). The match winners/UE was at 43/44 and 32/27 for Kiki and Linda, respectively. Won't go far in main draw with that type of stats.

Whatever happened to the Fruhvirtova sisters and their meteoric rise? Of course they're only 19 and 17 - so plenty of time. But, after seeing Andreeva and her strokes and overall game, I think Andreeva has a higher potential. The sisters are still playing some Junior-like game at times with moonballs that give Juniors troubles, but not at the Pro level.

I didn't see the Fruity1 match but I'm not surprised by the result.
I also had higher hopes for the sisters but they haven't really been delivering so far.
Of the two I think Fruity2 (Brenda) has a much higher potential.

As far as comparing them to Mirra is concerned, I don't think they will be able to catch up to her.
And Mirra's level will surely continue to shoot up in the coming years as she matures more.

Probably going to qualifying tomorrow. Not too many women's players that I'm super interested in seeing, although I might try to check out Ruse, Stefanini and Lys.

Yeah, Fruhvirtova is a bit of an enigma. Both of them are, I guess, but the better one looks pretty solid at times, and just lost at other times. I don't think she has top player potential, like Andreeva, but could be a regular in the top 50.

Is waste Raducanu even playing? you apparently need a PHD to find out from the US OPen website
If you google the event, you can see the draw right on the results page.

Raducanu plays Kenin in the first round. She could very well win, at which point the British press will go INSANE proclaiming how amazing she is for beating a two time grand slam champion (never mind that Kenin has been a disaster lately).

They'll destroy her just as badly if she loses. The press are awful in our country. I do think she'll get past Kenin though.

Gauff.. another nice draw. I suppose she needs it at the moment.

A few of the other seeds have pulled some real stinkers. Osaka/Ostapenko and Zheng/Anisimova are just brutal ties. Sabalenka will probably hope Zheng comes through.

Dart and Boulter have decent draws.

Thanks, did not google, Kenin will probably beat her and then lose next round

Does Zheng still have that hitch in her service motion, that is almost like Errani

Seriously, does Gauff have some shrine to the draw gods where she prays every night? It's really becoming a joke...

Meanwhile, Osaka gets yet another brutal draw.

Wow, Jessika Ponchet, who I saw playing extremely poorly a few weeks ago at the ITF Ladies Open in Figueira da Foz, has just qualified for the main draw beating Mandlik.
Things can really change in a heartbeat in this sport.
Interestingly, Mladenovic and Fruhvirtova met once again - they had met in the semis at the aforementioned tournament - and the result was pretty much the same. Fruhvirtova really shouldn't be losing to Mladenovic at this point in her career, but oh well.

My ability to give her (or this situation, rather) the benefit of the doubt is decreasing with every passing Slam. I guess we all have to accept she plays with a handicap, even though this is tennis and not golf.

Not the biggest fan of Swiatek but drawing R3 Pavlyuchenkova / R4 Mirra Andreeva / QF Pegula and then Rybakina and Sabalenka is truly brutal. Don’t see Iga making the final with that draw
slower conditions will help her...Pavs is completely hit or miss...Andreeva is a future #1 but not there yet...Jess hasn't had much if any success against her...Rybakina is a walking illness...could easily see another Sabs-Iga final...would favor Sabs there

Battle of the walking wounded in qualifying. Both Eala and Ruse have called the trainer and are slugging it out in a 3rd set

Yeah, statistically speaking it's getting so unlikely at this point, that it makes you wonder.

And looking at the graphic posted earlier, it's just ridiculous that the #1 seed could face the #6 in the QF, and the #2 face the #7, while the #3 faces the #8 (meaning the #3 seed has an QF matchup than the #1 and #2). This shouldn't be. I know there needs to be some variation, so the same players aren't constantly facing one another, but negating the advantage of being the #1 seed? Really?

Thanks. I guess I was thinking about Kenin making two slam finals, rather than winning them.

Even as the person that appreciates her the very least on this forum, I agree her Slam-draws have been "very demanding" and not exactly lucky in 2024.
But still... either my anti-player nr1 or nr 2 is immediately out - I'm not complaining!:D

About 15 minutes ago I was watching 3rd round qualification match between E-G. Ruse and A. Eala. Even though Eala from Phillippines was junior star (even had nr1 spot for quite short time) I hadn't much seen her before. She is ok, but the filipino-fans are not. I was already rooting for Ruse as she is a player that can challenge even the very high-ranked players on good day, seems kind of cool personality and is easy on the eyes (despite her recent tomboy-look) but Eala's fans made me hardcore-Ruse-fan in that match. So extremely glad that Ruse finally won and I hope Eala doesn't ever win a WTA match because her supporters are such stinkers.

This is very true. Her supporters were very annoying. Literally yelling loudly and continuously as long as there's no point in play - occasionally while Ruse was about to serve. It was so loud that I almost stopped watching or was tempted to mute. Ended up lowering the volume and continued watching just to see Ruse win and she did. Hooray!

Ruse has interesting game. Hits everything very hard, and very early. Rarely backs up more than a few steps behind baseline.

did you hope Eala doesn't win any WTA match ever tho?

Didn't think that far, but probably will stop watching her future matches if each will be like today's.

The hooligans supporters went too far. Ruse even talked to one of them by the fence. Ruse mental toughness yesterday was commendable.
But is that Eala's fault, should she say something to her supporters? I am glad she lost though

Of course it's not her fault - but I'll save my eardrums; and that's just a slight exaggeration. The match was really not watchable for me. Regardless of who's playing I will stop watching such matches. She seems to enjoy such support - good for her. They were cheering on UE, faults, etc. Very unruly fans.

Well, if a player asks his/her fans to be quiet, they will usually oblige.

Some interesting R1 matches ahead.

Osaka - Ostapenko
Andreescu - Paolini
Raducanu - Kenin
Zheng vs Anisimova

I can definitely see Anisimova taking out Zheng given AA's recent form and Zheng's lack of matches on hard courts.

Kenin is 6-16 this year and 1-6 in her last 7 matches, so Raducanu 'should' be winning that one, but she hasn't played in 3 weeks so it'll probably be closer than it should.

Paolini should beat Andreescu, who's been in terrible form lately, but Andreescu is capable of surprising. I just don't see it.

I hope fans watching the Osaka and Penko match love watching 3 shot rallies.

Section 4 of the draw is loaded with names, especially players who've done well at the US Open before:

#10 Ostapenko
Osaka
Muchova
#23 Fernandez
#30 Putintseva
Noskova
Pliskova
Andreescu
#5 Paolini

In that one section alone you've got:
3 former slam champs including the 2018 & 2020 USO champ Osaka and 2019 USO champ Andreescu. Along with 2017 RG champ Ostapenko.
4 former slam runner ups - Fernandez (2021 USO), Pliskova (2016 USO) and then Muchova (2023 RG) and Paolini (2024 RG & Wimbledon).

We've got Putintseva a former USO QFist and Noskova who just won a 500 in the lead up to this USO.

Nice to see Qiang Wang in a draw. Crazy to think it's been 5 years since she made the QF's here.

Got thrashed by Serena there but then turned it around at the next slam and took Serena out in the 3R of the 2020 Aus Open.
