Semi-Pro
Muchova has alcaraztitis

And you are in the in the surprising condition of the Crusader who absently pulled at his forelock some hours after a Saracen scimitar had, unconsciously to him, passed through his neck, as related by de Joinville.

it was a long game but Jpeg survives.

Some of you didn't appreciate the demure game of Pegula.
Demure? Pegula is a solid, tenacious player, but utterly bland. She can hit with some power, but there's nothing very exciting about it. She can put up strong defense as well, but it's pretty by-the-book. She won because she was better than Muchova on the big points in the second and third sets of this match. Muchova was highly entertaining to watch, but ultimately too un-clutch to move on. Too many slight miscues when the pressure was on.

yeah it's definition of demure.

she's not like other girls, not too passive, not too aggressive.

Funny how Pegula didn't like the poking of the interviewer with index finger. Interviewer shouldn't touch players other than giving a pat on the shoulder or back. US women have been consistently getting some good results at slams. I don't think Pegula can beat Sabalenka, but it's good to see Pegula in the final.

Sorry, but I find that term completely inapplicable to an athletic contest. It describes a social demeanor, not a playing style. And if you mean it as a compliment here, I'm not sure what element of Pegula's game you're attempting to compliment. I've stated my opinion above. Her playing is effective, but undistinguished.

It looked like she had taken pain meds before the match. Once those wore off, so did she. She gave a very valient effort. She started high and had a downward line. Pegula started low and didn’t improve her game until second set.

Can't she take another pill during the match?

Haaaaaa, perfect. I couldn't have asked for more. It all makes sense now...

So great that a new generation has picked up on this word... and completely failed to understand its true meaning. Amazing.

No, I only mentioned Navratilova as an example of a classic player. Navarro's style is more like C Evert's, MJ Fernendez's or A Sanchez's.
Sorry, but the only thing old-school about Navarro's game was her outfit. Otherwise she just swings away and tries to hit everything as hard as possible, just like most other players. She has a two handed backhand, and rarely slices.

An American in a slam final. I don't believe it
It's not THAT rare on the women's side. We even had Kenin winning one fairly recently.

No matter her result in the final, Pegula will be #3 in the WTA rankings next Monday.
Ranked about Gauff, where she belongs. She is indeed the #1 American woman, and right now only Navarro looks capable of challenging that status.

It was also mentioned that she had a stomach issue from the previous day, so 2 matches in 2 consecutive days may have been too much. Hard to say. They did show her stretching her back on a change over. Maybe she’ll respond at her post match presser.

Relatively speaking. Of course, old style cannot survive in the current environment where women try to play like men.

Had she broken in 3rd game of second set, I doubt Pegula comes back from that. But she hit some unexpected errors over there.
She needs to work both on her fitness and her game. While it's a delight when it's working, it's a disaster when it's not working throwing tons of UE. She need. To make some changes so that she can develop a reliable game in which she can stay in rallies and thus win some points

Very sad for Muchova, who I really wanted to get there, but very happy for Jess, very smartly played match even if she really did just survive that match getting out of reach in the second set. The third game of the second really was something. When Muchova let it go her magic largely disappeared, but fair play to Jess for neutralizing it as much as anything else.

pegula said:
“She was playing unbelievably. I mean, she made me look like a beginner,” Pegula told Rennae Stubbs on court afterward. “I was about to burst into tears because it was so embarrassing.”

“She was destroying me.”

Muchova pushes a routine forehand wide, under no pressure, and the announcers are talking about Pegula's mental toughness? WTF? Are they even watching the match?
Oh they shamelessly support the American, even during the Navarro's match they were waxing her great game when she was being outplayed in the first set

Was it actually Pegs stepping up or Muchova coming down?
Both. Pegula played like trash that first set. But either way, Muchova was winning that first set anyway. She was red-hot. Her level of play from that first set was not sustainable across a whole match. That was some of the best tennis I’ve ever seen. It came back in patches in the 3rd set, which was extremely entertaining.

That said, I find Muchova’s game by far the most entertaining in the WTA. She’s Federer 2.0. She has a slice back hand and she knows when to charge the net. She also is great at the overhead smash from anywhere on the court, including back-peddling to the back 1/3 of the court, then blasting a laser overhead whike extended. Her game is exquisite. It’s a shame that she’s had so many injuries.

But. I was rooting for compatriot Pegula. I had to. I’ve been to the USO twice and I love it. The crowd goes nuts. It’s fun. And they might make it very tough for Sabalenka tomorrow. Sabalenka unraveled last year when the crowd backed Coco. We will see if she unravels again. If not, then she will raise the trophy.

Agree on everything including the crowd maybe able to make her pull it off in the final. This is her best opportunity, hopefully she can lay it all on the court and get one. If she doesn't, she will fall into the company of other players who could have won it but did not like Berdych's ex, Lisicki, Anderson and others.
That behind the back lob winner in her previous game is something I had never seen. Definitely she needs to win one GS at the least.

Pegula is likeable. When asked about playing Sabalenka she seemed to be thinking ‘well fvck, it won’t be easy’ but then she backed herself and said she’s ready. A no nonsense gal. Nice forehand too!

Sabalenka looking to join Osaka as the only other active woman to win an Aus Open and US Open.

Active being the key word as obviously players like Serena and Kerber did it.

Non-live viewers often can't gauge very well how heavy her shots are. This was mentioned by one of the commentators. I didn't pay attention to this, and started to pay attention. It's mostly flat, fast and deep. This part of her game is "underestimated" in the word of the commentator. Very true.

That kind of game may not lead to great results at present. She's nowhere nearly as energetic and forcing the point the way Navratilova and ASV were. Right now, Navarro is not impressive at all.

Pegula's post-game press conference:
“I did some media thing the other day, too, and they were like, ‘What’s the most annoying thing?’ It’s that people think I have a butler, that I get chauffeured around. I have a private limo, that I fly private everywhere.”
So, not true! She has 2 butlers and 2 private limos! :D

Congrats on the win and hard work. She could've probably taken an easier route like working in Dad's company, but she didn't - Pro tennis is not easy.

I find it somewhat hilarious to see her winning matches while always looking like she just woke up because of that sleepy eyes.

The current WTA environment features a lot of women trying to "play like men," in the sense that they are trying to hit big from the baseline. But the current WTA environment is also marked by wild inconsistency in performances (Ostapenko could lose first round, make a deep run, or go from goddess to scrub from one round to the next), and players completely losing their ability to play effectively this way in tight situations.

Muchova, Jabeur (when in form), and recently Barty, are all examples that the old style could not only survive, but thrive. Watch some of those old matches, and the best players could do what these modern players are doing, but do it consistently over time, and maintain it in tight spots.

Sure. Enjoy the garbage, I love to visit but couldn't possibly live there.
You couldn't live in NYC because you couldn't hack it. Dudes like you are a dime a dozen. You find excuses to hide from the reality...

I think people are forgetting that Muchova has hardly played this year, and hardly had any significant match prep before the tournament. Had she been fully match fit and match sharp, I think she maintains that level for longer and either puts the match away in the second set, or takes advantage of some of the opportunities she had again in the 3rd to turn it around.

Pegula is likeable. When asked about playing Sabalenka she seemed to be thinking ‘well fvck, it won’t be easy’ but then she backed herself and said she’s ready. A no nonsense gal. Nice forehand too!
Pegula isn't offensive, but I really don't see much that is likable about her. Her game is 'watching paint dry' boring and unimaginative. She shows no personality on court, and is barely any better off the court. Then, when you get a glimpse even deeper, like her portions of that show "Break Point," it only gets worse. Turns out she is the spoiled, out of touch girl that many suspected her to be.

Non-live viewers often can't gauge very well how heavy her shots are. This was mentioned by one of the commentators. I didn't pay attention to this, and started to pay attention. It's mostly flat, fast and deep. This part of her game is "underestimated" in the word of the commentator. Very true.
She hits pretty hard, but not nearly as hard as some other players. Take for example her matches against Giorgi (which I've seen quite a few of). When sharing the court with Camila, it is apparent how much harder the Italian hits the ball, but obviously Pegula is more consistent with her groundstrokes. This was usually enough for Pegula to force Giorgi into making an error first, and in recent years Pegula usually got the better of Giorgi unless Camila was 100% switched on, like she was when beating Pegula in the semis of the Canadian Open a few years ago.

Same will apply to this final. Either Sabalenka will keep it together long enough to finish the points off, or she will not. Pegula will really just be a passenger, with no chance of dictating or controlling play.

Well, people are making such a huge deal about her taking the subway one day, as if she was in some combat zone. It's the 7 train, ffs, and millions of people have no choice but to take those trains to work every day. It's not a thing. She shouldn't be commended for it.

As for the rest, we see how mental this sport is, right? Pegula had the very real advantage of being able to toil away in the lower ranks for years, without worrying about running out of resources or the fear of having to figure out another way to earn a living if tennis didn't work out. This is pretty huge if you see how influential mental stress is on player performance.
