For a quarterfinal match involving an American, a lot of empty seats
Nationality is not enough. You need star power, and there's relatively little here. Tiafoe has never won anything of import, and is not a media figure either. Dimitrov is a well-known veteran, but has never won a slam in all those years, so he has bit of a "failure to launch" scent. Kind of Gasquet-ish. "Wouldn't mind watching" yields smaller crowds than must-see.

Man. I've accepted this for years. Been watching Dimi for over 10 years now.

It's really insane how he can have almost all of the Federer aesthetic but has no real power or heaviness to his shots and just has to grind so much. His game has never really evolved or improved much than what he's been doing the last decade. The only difference is now. He's 33 and can't grind as much as he could a few years ago. Seeing him have to hit so many backhand slices because he just doesn't have Roger's quickness to dictate with inside out forehands or run around backhand is just brutal to watch as he's gotten older. It's painful just to see him backpeddle just to try to run around and hit an inside out forehand.

Always will support the guy but man.

Do you want to know how average your local hotshot 5.0 player is on a world class scale?

As diminished as Grigor is in this match, he'd still beat any 5.0 in the country 6-0, 6-0 playing like he is right now.

Grigor once lost a match in Acapulco to a guy that was having lower body cramps. The guy made a comeback and won. I know he is injured and it’s not cramps, but he has one set to himself. Stuff can happen.

It was a real chance for him to make a slam final. But this was never a real chance for him to win one.

That chance evaporated years ago.

There were other slams he came in with great form and great health, then did his usual first week upset to randomly ranked top 100 guy.

He's good now for one big win against a top player at a Masters event, but the days of hoping he could string together multiple top wins against top guys to win a slam have long been over.

Tiafoe 100% has star power, he's the definition of a crowd pleaser.

I never expected him to reach a Masters final again, but he did that this year.

I understand the things against him, but saying he had a chance to beat Tiafoe and Fritz wasn't exactly farfetched. He's still top 10 in the world for a reason.

I'm old enough to remember the Federer-Malisse Wimby 2012 match where the first set Roger was walking and just hitting swinging volleys from inside the baseline because he couldn't move. Got treated for the back and played a bit better after.

That was the match after his long 5 set comeback against Benneteau.
