It's good that he has de minaur

Fritz or musetti

Before final.

These are not the best players who crowd adores. Nole would get far better share than vs someone like an alcaraz.

Alcaraz is much more famous than them, so that's probably right. But I think you don't quite know how the English crowd works if you think that De Minaur, Fritz, and Musetti are unpopular players there. Anglophone players tend to be quite popular in the UK; thus, both De Minaur and Fritz are quite likely to have the support of quite a few people in the crowd. Musetti was runner-up at Queen's and he's a flair player/has a pretty game, and that, too, will endear people to him. (It's for similar reasons that Alcaraz is already so popular. Not that his game is "pretty," but he's definitely a flair player).

People who know Shapovalov said he was not prepared to make sacrifices in order to succeed. I suspect that is also the case with Rune. He was close to Sinner and Alcaraz a couple of years ago in terms tennis, but now he is no match to them. Only he himself can fix that, I think. The fact that he split with Boris Becker only after a short spell was an ominous sign. He probably doesn't listen to other people.

Is Spain in anglophone country. Alcaraz can't speak well in English.

Much better than Rafa when he was 21 but still.

I am glad that Novak won, but I am not sure this match was worth not sleeping a minute tonight (or better yet this morning). 6:30 AM here in Aus... At least Zverev vs Fritz had some fire in it..

Winning this so comfortably when the match up never featured a straight sets contest before and having only two dramatic games caused by his own mistakes and slips... I'll take that.

The fire is there again for sure. Form, lurking somewhere around the corner. The net plays were stunning for today.

Gooooooodnight tuuuuuuuurdballs.

Everyone scoffed when I said Djokovic would be back by Wimbledon. Yet here he is, showing no signs of his very recent "miniscus tear".

He wins this in three. Rune is too 2022.

Pour some sugar on me, honey.

Rune is suffering from the problem of expectations being too high. He had that great streak at the end of 2022 that has led some to think that he can develop at the rate of an Alcaraz, but that was never likely: Alcaraz is the second-best young player of the last 35 years or so by far. He's much closer to Nadal than whoever is third (Djokovic? Andriy Medvedev? Hewitt?) is to him. Rune would have had the chance to develop more slowly, as Sinner did until he was about the age Rune is now, and then take off, but expectations being too high has harmed him. He still could improve a fair bit in the next year or two, but he might have to go back to the drawing board in some ways.

Djokovic in the post match interview showing that being the GOAT does not mean he can’t be incredibly petty.

It’s the same thing where Ruud supporters shout his name and it’s mistaken for boos.

Djokovic claimed he was disrespected and saying they can’t touch him. His hunger for respect and validation clearly fuels him, but it’s so absurd for someone of his stature

No, but Australia and the USA are - hence my claim was that De Minaur and Fritz will get a fair amount of support just from being Anglophone. I've been to Wimbledon many times and I promise you that casual fans will often support a player for a reason like that.

Alcaraz's popularity I put down to him being a flair player and to him being a prodigy at a time when tennis hasn't had a prodigy in a long time - and at Wimbledon, especially, to him beating Djokovic last year.

I don't think every single failure in the past should make excuses of expectations.

Same excuse for Dimitrov
Same for Zverev
Same for Rune now.

absolutely pathetic performance by Rune...completely unprepared....had some belief in him left still but if I hear him once more stick his name in with Alcaraz and Sinner my head will explode

p.s. congrats Holger, you finally won a point with that brilliant drop shot strategy

Not sure about that, I think with Boris it had to do with two things: Boris isn't allowed to travel to the UK/US and Boris isn't 100% on top with his analysis except for mental support sourced from his own experiences, not sure he can bring much to the table in terms of coaching. That said, it was the worst development that Boris + Luthi have been dispatched while Mouratoglou was brought back. It all seems to go down now. Full circle

Not sure what new hissy fit the baby will do now.

Lol yesss

I actually think De Minaur may not be an easy match for Novak at this stage of his career. We'll see. Hope his knees hold up.

The worst part for Rune isn't even the already raw result of being straight-setted.

He never looked like he was gonna take control of the match, instantly went under and never consistently pressured Djokovic into making people think he could turn things around.

A couple Break Points here and there, that he failed to capitalize on, but never a lot of deeply competitive games in a row.

Indeed. You can assume the best or assume the worst. Calling out "Rune" (or "Ruud") has been par for the course at both players' matches for seasons, now, and their respective supporters usually stay quiet during serve and only cheer at relatively appropriate times.

For No.2 to choose to take offense and assume the worst – on the back of a straight-sets victory – is apallingly poor sportsmanship.

At RG, this season, he asked the chair to implement special measures that aren't allowed for just because the clay was slippery. Everyone was struggling and asking is fair but getting pissed when the chair rightly declines the request because the rules define the policy for sweeping the sand is also just poor sportsmanship.

I can't help but feel that every Novak match leaves me feeling I'd rather be watching other sportspeople on court. I was always something of a fan of his and felt he got an unfairly harsh treatment from many a crowd of yesteryear but, frankly, I now think I'll just enjoy watching tennis more when he's retired. I felt the same about the Williams sisters at the end.

I really wanna see Rune competing with Raz + Sinner going forward. But I lost my faith somehow.
If you want to eat with the best, you gotta bring it to the courts. And today was a dismal performance from start to finish. At least he brought up a fight against Zverev at RG, but today was just a lost cause.

Do you think it was mostly due to him not yet being comfortable on grass? I had a feeling that grass would really favor his game. But he didn't show anything promising today.

Wait what? Permanently?

Yes, Novak's draw this year is like the Wimbledon folks really needed him to make the final so they could make some money. The other half of the draw is going to come through bloody and tired, and Novak is going to make a final without having played anyone who can make him break a sweat. I guess we'll see if Demon is up for the challenge this time, but my money is on Novak to make the final from this half of the draw. I don't see anything that makes me think the three remaining guys on his side of the draw can hurt him, even if he's operating at 70%.
