Players make errors and quality can still be good with errors - but the ratio in this match is just awful. 50/50 winners/unforced errors is a good baseline for good play overall - even slightly less. I've only followed scores so I can't attest to the quality of this match, but the stats are pretty bad. I guess if the unforced errors come after a fairly long point, and UE is from a player out of position and reaching to get the ball - that's less of a poor quality UE than simply missing a rally ball or midcourt sitter.
Both players are striking well in the rallies but can’t hit a winner. No great game play, no dropshot attempt, no angles or change of play, just hitting it back waiting for the other to go for something which they inevitably miss. It’s not great.

Absolutely clutch from Gauff. 6-0 at the change of ends in the breaker. Zheng pulling the trigger unnecessarily it seems.

Coco Gauff is the 2024 WTA Finals champ.

Defeats Zheng 3-6 6-4 7-6.

Huge payday for the American after a mixed year. Finished the match strong with a good comeback as Zheng capitulated with way too many unforced errors.

Zheng got nervous, and understandably so.

Congrats to Coco for a great tourney. She deserved to win. And she fixed her service yips just in time.

Final stats:

Gauff:
21 winners and 50 unforced errors

Zheng:
21 winners and 61 unforced errors

I truly can’t think of a women’s match where I’ve seen over 110 unforced errors and just 42 winners but hey that’s been this tournament.

This match just shows why that so-called 'unforced error' stat in tennis makes no sense. These ladies played a great match, they are both excellent athletes that can get balls back in play, and they just forced each other to go for more and more. Which resulted in errors. But to call them 'unforced' is ridiculous.

credit to Coco, she's such a fighter and in the end just too cool and consistent for Zheng...Zheng has got to learn to be better with her decision making under pressure...awful shot selection, and execution

Awesome result for Gauff winning Beijing and Riyadh YEC. I think she would likely have won Wuhan had she not thrown in 20+ DFs. Hopefully she can carry this form through to the AO swing.

I’m hoping for a juicy Aus Open with a competitive Coco, Zheng and Sabalenka and hopefully Swiatek and Rybakina too.

But knowing our luck it’ll be chaotic and not in a good way.

cut throat queen didn't even mention Coco name but said 'Champion'

and then stand with hand on her hips.
At one point I didn't think she was going to mention the champion at all. I think people are reading into these exchanges too much, she congratulated the champion and that's enough, you don't need to say something sentimental if you're not well acquainted with the person. Zheng is certainly somewhat cold and distant but I don't see an issue with that and many many people saw nothing wrong with Sharapova's demeanor.

I remember high ue's on the 2001 Capriati Clijsters RG final and turns out I was right - 143 total unforced errors(79 by Capriati, 64 by Clijsters).

averages to 3.47 ue's per game today, 3.67 in '01

2001 Miami Final, Venus d Capriati also had crazy stats - 124 combined ue's and only 42 winners (71 ue's for Venus, 53 for Capriati. Capriati only had 7 winners, Venus had 35)
4.13 ue's per game.

I'm sure there were more than a few Sharapova or Li Na matches that had over 100 ue's, those 2 could put up some crazy numbers.

also remembered this thread - at 2023 Dubai Gauff d Keys 62, 75. 82 combined ue's with only 14 winners.

It’s sad/annoying the Olympics doesn’t award points because Zheng should be higher than #7 in the rankings. With the title here today she’ll go up to #4 just 190 points behind #3 Coco but she deserves to be the #3 as the Gold medallist.
She is already the World #1 according to UTR.

Well.....that was definitely an exciting finals....regardless of the stats. Zheng was definitely salty at the end, but, I cut her some slack just because of how close the match was and how quickly afterwards she had to address the crowd. She needed a little more time to calm down to digest what just happened.
