Random observation ...

The Fruhvirtova sisters in with 2 WCs.

Eala, the ex-junior player with 1 GS singles and two doubles titles won her 1st round match. She's inching up to the top-150 at #169 career high. Still looking for that breakthrough in the WTA-level tournament, she's been mostly competing at ITF W60 and lower. I first saw her in Amazon Prime Video documentary on Nadal academy. Apparently still training there since 12. I'm guessing, clay should be one of her favorite surfaces. What's her prospect?

^ The other is already defeated (and the other down a break in the second after losing the 1st) and I must say I hate this kind of tournaments in which they are still far from end of the qualies but the 1st round is already running!?? (And thus I missed an easy pick in SDL! ;) )

Whenever I'm following the scores for this at work I always end up picturing every single match being played inside The Magic Box, even though that's obviously not happening.

And just like that, the fruities are out. At least they were competitive matches.

Saville/Gavrilova also out, losing to Cristian in three sets.

Is it just me that doesn't see what all the fuss is about with the Fruhvirtova Sisters?

From their matches today, both possess average-decent movement around the court. Although, they're both quite heavy-footed. They have solid enough groundstrokes off both wings but struggle to generate any meaningful pace to consistently move their opponents around. They don't have good enough serves to get themselves out of trouble either. They're decent at the net but nothing more.

If anything, Linda's game looks like it's regressed from when she first came onto the tour in 2022. She used to have a very good backhand that she could regularly lean into and generate power on, now it looks neutered.

Brenda's still only 16, about to turn 17 shortly so has time to develop. In fact, both do, but I'm not seeing any X-Factor in either of them. Certainly nothing like the sort Gauff generated at the same age.

They seem like solid defensive baseline grinders, but nothing more.

I must admit, I haven't seen a lot of Brenda. One time when she was about 14 losing to Stephens (no shame in that), and maybe when she lost to Sabalenka possibly (again, no shame in that). I don't think I've seen her play a match she was expected to compete in yet, if you see what I mean.

Linda looked really exciting when she won that title in India and had the Miami run. Since then, very flat. Seen her a few times and mostly concur with you, No Kwan.

Early days though. Plenty of time for them to keep finding more in their games. Tbh, I haven't noticed Andreeva much recently either. I think a lot of players have a little explosion where they announce themselves, then struggle for 2 or 3 years whilst they finish their growing and iron out what they need to do to take that next step.

Did you see the amount of fans there? Maybe 5 at the start sitting in the sun end.

Sofia got crushed by Schmiedlova.
Didn't watch the match. Not surprising, not a household name and has a long way to go to make it on the WTA tour.

Disappointed but not surprised that somehow Gauff yet again gets an easy draw.

Swiatek not so great with Azarenka or Svitolina (who beat her at Wimbledon) in the 4R.

Sabalenka very tricky with either Krejcikova or the in winning form Danielle Collins 4R.

Rybakina has a Stuttgart final rematch looming 3R against Kostyuk and then 4R either Alexandrova or Kalinskaya (who actually beat Elena here in Madrid last year).

Meanwhile Gauff gets Yastremska 3R and either the completely out of form Samsonova or inconsistent mess Madison Keys 4R.

haven't watched any matches yet but wondering if they have those fine looking ball girls they had had a bunch of years ago. I recall male players complained they had hard time keeping eyes on the right balls :)

so, there obviously were more champs on those courts then.

her draw is alright. Could get Anisimova who we know is capable of beating any player. Not to mention Keys and Samsonova could suddenly be in form out of nowhere as it is their style. Or she would get Naomi who we know will have a more emotional stake if those two play.

Same weight of the draw with Swiatek I think, especially since Azarenka is her pigeon and Svitolina is bad at Madrid (Rome is another story). I would say Sabalenka has the toughest out of those four.

God, Raducanu truly is the worst slam champion the womens side has ever seen.

Pennetta, Sloane, Kenin would all run ropes around this joke of a player.

That's a shocker of a result. Sounds like she didn't turn up at all for this one.

I thought Dart might get the 2nd set against Bucsa but even that seems to be going by the wayside.

Raducanu once again given a wildcard and an easy draw to gently ease herself into the tournament whilst moving up the rankings and she can't even get past the first hurdle.
I'm sure they'll keep giving her wildcards until she has a result though, because she's pretty and deserves it more than the others, I guess.

Truly don’t think she’ll ever win another career title at this rate, absolute fluke.
I'm really starting to feel the same way. At times she can dig up her good game but as she has so much issues with her physical health and if not with that then the mental ones, so I'm having very hard time to believe for once all the pointers show to same right direction.

How dare you. Stop trying to tear women down.
Someone has to hold the title of the worst slam champ :) and it’s clear it’s Raducanu. Or who do you think it is?

Feel free to defend that performance by Raducanu and tell me that I’m not allowed to criticise a woeful showing.

Some choke by Anisimova who won the first set 6-1.

She led 5-3 in the 3rd set. Served for the win at 5-4 and again at 6-5. Both times got broken and loses in the 3rd set tiebreaker.

Gauff seems to always get an easy draw. Annoying to me that with all the hand holding, she doesn’t have a stella record. Her game is defense and with her out-of-this-world physical talent, she gets to the 2nd week always. Here floor is higher than most, but her ceiling is lower than the elites. Stop getting these easy draw and we may get a more realistic level.

Incredibly she was supposed to play KaPlis, but instead got to play the 24yo world no. 82 Carlé, and she still lost in two sets. Ouch! I actually thought she was doing better lately, with some decent wins.

Looking at the score, are we sure she didn't tank the match? She is pretty fragile and did play more tennis than usual in the weeks prior.

She will win a 250 or 500, it's not that hard at that level and just last week she at least took Swiatek over 2 hours and thrashed Noskova so she's not totally useless. I didn't see this match so curious how good the Argentinian was as she was a qualified.
