Just saw that Diallo slipped past Nardi in the end.

Some nice 5 setters so far this year

Edit: just saw he plays Khach next. Diallo lost both of their matches last year, but their Almaty final was super fun

Pretty wild seeing Med struggle against the 418th ranked newcomer from Thailand. On the verge of being down 1-2.

Is it just me or was this draw rough for SDL?
Definitely. I know many have loaded up on Popyrin who yes is now a Masters champ and playing in front of a home crowd but Moutet can be dangerous.

Same for Musetti going against his countryman Arnaldi and they're locked in a tiebreaker right now.

Tiafoe, Kecmanovic and Tien barely scraped through for those of us who picked them.

Two more MP gone, but on the GMP serve. Monf hasn't faced BP this match it seems so he should serve it out if GMP holds here, unless he gets frustrated ...

Medvedev losing to a guy ranked 400th pretty much signifies that it’s over. He is 30 years old soon, and he’s not the Big 3. He can’t avert Father Time.

Also, full credit to Monfils' wife Elina Svitolina, former #3 and current #28 who won her 1R singles match yesterday and will play her 2R match tomorrow.

She was courtside for the full 3 hour 50 minute match, right in the sun.

Their child is home with her parents in Europe. That's love and dedication.

This Samrej kid is feeding it to Medvedev in what is quite a fun game to watch.

DJ Sammy Rej appears to like a drop shot. Not all of them are working but he’s certainly got the octopus under the grill.

Medvedev smashed the net camera into smithereens in set 3.

The last time an upset even remotely close to this Medvedev match (possibly) happening was the 2002 Australian Open when #4 Kafelnikov lost to #234 Alex Kim.

This is far worse though because Samrej is ranked #418.

(this was given thanks to Channel 9 commentators)

Also, Medvedev loves a 5 setter at the Aus Open lets be real.

From 2020-2024 he's played 8 of them. 4 of those were last year alone.

Ouch.

Medvedev breaks and he tries to get the crowd to roar for him but instead of roars he gets some boos instead.

Aussie crowd more supportive of the Thai wildcard at this point than the #5 seed.

Medvedev breaks and half heartedly waves for the crowd to hype him up. Also I think he's just called for the trainer too? Umpire just phoned it in

Yup. Just like In the Djokovic match, trainer called for cramping. Just shows the difference between the top players and lower ranks. Can't handle the high level in Australian heat for 5 setters. Medvedev probably got this now.

Yes, Medvedev with his foot in the door. Goody.

Can someone please explain to me how a 418 in the world with no matches played at all can get a WC to the AO main draw while everyone else has to go through qualifiying??

After that explain how Caty McNally ( #540) got into the main draw.
