Zverev wins 6-4 6-4 6-4.

Just the one break in each set for Zverev. Not exactly dominant against a player he should’ve easily beaten. Not exactly the confident match he needed. But could‘ve been worse.

As long as he is not dropping sets early, he is fine. His aim right now is to get to the second week with minimum exertion. Peaking is for second week.

Exactly. The big plus for me is there seems to be no sign of that potential injury scare that was being reported pre-tournament. He looked like he was moving and hitting well and as usual the problem was his focus in the BP chances but that's just Zverev being Zverev.

Yes, that is most important thing for him, that he is actually healthy enough to compete. Looks fine, and he will work his way into the tournament.

No ice between these two champs...
But is Sinner really 1.92?

Might be the angle

It should be added that Nishikori is such a titan in 5-set matches that he has never lost a match from a 2-0 lead in sets! Not even the Big 3 or many other ATG tennis players can boast of this!
Yup, he also probably has the record for pulling out injured in the next round. Let's hope he is healthy and can keep competing. I watched the first set, told my wife Nishikori would win in 5, and turned to another match.

Zverev did what he has to do, win it in 3 sets without prolonging it, which considering his history is never a given for him.
Let's remember that last year here in Melbourne he risked going out both with the unknown Klein and with Norrie, both matches that he won in the fifth set in the super tiebreak.
In particular with the Slovenian he was one step away from the abyss in the fourth set.

So this first match of his in the first round must be evaluated positively.
He must take advantage of the weaker quarter of the draw reaching the possible semifinal without wasting extra energy.

Just read that Nishikori was match points down in the third set on the way to a straight set loss before mounting an epic 5-set comeback win. Wow!
Yeah i watched the match from the second set onward and he was a match point down twice in the third set on his serve at 4-5, and he saved both match points and held serve. Then after 12 break point chances he got the break of serve at 5-5 in that third set and never looked back. Looked like Thiago Monteiro might have been struggling physically or just checked out mentally because late in the fourth set he stopped running for shots and basically gave that set away.
It was a great win for Kei and I’m sure a crushing loss for Monteiro.

At least he didn’t get sucked into a 4+ hour, 5 set match like he often does in early rounds of majors. :-D
I still don’t think he’ll win this event but he survived and advanced in straight sets.

Yeah but in last night’s case, he was 2 sets to none down. ;)
Surprisingly, Kei’s record in 5 set matches is 29-8. I still remember his loss to Federer at the AO in 2017 when Federer beat Nish, Wawa and Nadal in 5 sets to win the title. Felt like if he had beaten Fed in that match, he might have made a run to the title that year.

Kei "5th set" Nishikori does it again.
Tied with Egg in the Open Era for best Bo5 win percentage. But Egg has played many more Bo5 so I’d give Egg the edge in being the weakest active player in terms of falling behind in a Bo5 match.

Lol at Tsitsipas now down 2 sets. Ends the 2nd with an awful game.

I've never been able to figure Tsitsipas out. He's a guy who looks good playing tennis but at the same time looks checked out and like he can't get off the court fast enough. He got broken down 4-3 and then just completely mailed in the last game.

Tsitsipas is becoming irrelevant.
Yeah, Michelsen isn't someone I think will go far here. I guess we'll see if Tsitsipas can right the ship. I don't think it'll be at this tournament. I never really understood why he was winning, so none of this surprises me. Well, the kid still has to get to 3. We'll see if a little choking helps Tsitsipas.

Everyone watching the great train wreck that's Tsitsipas. Meanwhile Tiafoe up two sets to love and looking fit in his new Lululemon kit.

I hope Art made his reservations already so he has a good flight home. It’s a long flight.
Made all the more longer by having to chase the Earth's rotation.

Edit: actually I think got that wrong. He'll be flying East, so he'll gain time.

I would be very surprised if Tsitsipas is still a professional tennis player at 30.
I have rarely seen a high-level athlete so disinterested in his profession.
As long as the results had more or less maintained certain expectations, he could have held up, but now that he seems to have been in a tunnel for 2 years now, I don't see him continuing to drag himself along like this for much longer.

Mensik really looking good after Basilashvili gave him a good contest in the middle couple of sets.

The Greek world number 11, who claimed his only win at the Monte Carlo Masters, has also ended his collaboration with his father Apostolos as his coach.

"I'm looking at kind of reinventing myself," said Tsitsipas,"

this is new stepanoe
