One does not retire immediately after flubbing set point in the tiebreaker. Had he stayed on and played 15 minutes in the second set and then retired there would be little to no jeering.

How the hell do you retire at the end of a tiebreaker? It's a terrible look.

There's no way he retires immediately if he had won that tiebreaker.
He looked like he was ready to retire a lot sooner than that. I feel like he was just playing out the set. If he won it maybe he might have pressed on, as he said in his presser apparently, but it doesn't change the fact that clearly he was done. It's just that winning the set perhaps gives you the push to give a little more.

I don't know. He might have played on. But considering his serving was the worst it has ever been, it would only be a matter of time before Zverev got the upper hand.
We do know. Because he said after the QF against Carlos had he lost that set he would’ve retired. But he won and he played on.

He’s not committed and he let the fans down. You know he wouldn’t have walked up and retired if he won that set against Zverev come on.

Not everyone is. I know many people who have saved up in life for one time to go to a slam SF. Imagine you’ve saved for years and that’s what you get.
Don't these ticket holders get 1 WTA match and 1 ATP match for their ticket?

In any case the crowd is not booing about the money. They are booing because of the sudden unexpected manner of retirement. Even if one is out of gas and retirement is the practical course of action, one waits until the second set to retire.

It is all about appearances.

No, I don't know. He was playing against Alcaraz while the muscle was still warm....since then, he didn't practice and the injury would have shown its true form. The first set serving was NOT going to get him over the finish line...he was lucky he was not broken multiple times in that first set. He was not going to just breeze through the next few sets, if anything, he would have been ground down even more...and then what? Limp into the final to face Sinner?

So disagree and we will leave it there.

At the time, he did not have details on the injury and tried to ride it out with painkillers and it worked.

Today he already knew what the injury was but gave it a try, and it only got worse throughout the set.

I realized he was getting worse as the set went on, but expected him to make more effort on the TB, but he kept moving as badly as before, if not worse.

Sad for Murray, he got out of there so quickly…

If Djokovic has lasted so long at the top, it is because he has always known how to have long-term management.
Even the desire not to get vaccinated is dictated by this desire in his head to safeguard his health in the long term.

If he made this decision to retire, it is because he was aware that he could have exponentially complicated his current situation without any profit, given that he would have had to come back from a disadvantage of about an hour and a half, and even in the remote hypothesis that he had managed to overturn the match, in what conditions would he have shown up in the final?
The game was clearly not worth the candle.

If by chance Djokovic were to win the 25th slam in 2025, remember that this retirement could have been the wisest choice of his entire career, whatever the disrespectful and rude Australian spectators present at the stadium say.

Not sure why, but it reminded of that Seinfeld episode where George is like “yeah I’m gonna get my car repaired at a dealership, why don’t i just flush my money down the toilet.”

The Sinner Shelton match will be a bloodbath.

This 1 set match might still be the best value for the money.

Djokovic admitted in his press conference that if he won the first set he would have continued with the match.

No wonder why the crowd booed.

Some people already gave a good explanation: if this was a final, he could have given everything and all with the injury, but the QF was already very tough winning with injury, and therefore he had to make a call not only for this match, this tournament, but also rest of the year... I guess he planned ahead already in his head... there is still RG, Wimbledon, USO... for the next 3 years at least.

:-D

This is Jim Jones cult level.

Sounds like fans have to be weary of ever buying tickets to a Djokovic match going forward in his career because if it doesn’t go his way he will just retire.

He just confirmed he would have continued playing today against Zverev if he won the first set. Similar to how he said he would have retired if he lost the 2nd set to Alcaraz. So if it doesn’t go his way he retires, if it does, he plays on. How many retirements will we get from him this year?

He is a tournament and paying fans worst nightmare as he will retire whenever he wants when he’s down a set or 2.

Novak knew even he somehow scrapped against zverev, he woould have zero chance against sinner in finals. So better to quit now.

But i think he should have just played kn casually another two sets, lose maybe 6-1 and 6-1 aka Alcaraz. That would be more respectful to the crowd

I don't understand the booing. Novak did his best despite sore thigh. He doesn't deserve that. For some reason, Australian crowds have gotten worse than before. They used to be the best.
Youth crime is worse than ever in Australia, teens and 20s are the worst people in Australia BY FAR!
And crowds are fairly young in tennis, so makes sense that the crowds are TRASH
That's why I've never dated anyone under 31 !!

Yes, agree, if he breaks a leg, it should not be a excuse, he should keep playing.

Same with Sacha against Rafa a few years ago, should have kept playing, even with a wheelchair.

Watching the first few games of the match now (replay) : Seems Sascha chose the perfect strategy : make this a very physical match and grind Novak down. No hightlight reel shots, just make him play an awful lot of balls. Team Carlos are you watching? Your player should have more cards up on his sleeve.

In whose favor?
A ticket for this one-set match is still better spent than a ticket for seeing Sinner straight-set Shelton in 3 sets...

And now Johnny Mac and all the skeptics look silly for doubting the serious injury...

And yet The Injured Djoker still came within a hair of taking the first set off your favourite world #2 Zed.

What does it tell us?

Sorry for the old man today... He has looked really good and I think he would have luftes the trophy if he was fit. But this is ageing… if his body holds up, he will reach the final stages of all the slams. Impressive.

Zed has looked strong. He’ll put himself in there.

I would love to see Sinner straight set Sinner. But I will settle for Ben pulling the upset.

That Chainz sucks? Or he starts slow, maybe. Whatever it tells us I’m sticking with Chainz to win the CYGS. You can stick with your fav frail Carrot. Some people think Carrot is vulnerable without his special massage cream.

I’m pleased your fav cheating Iga lost to Maddy.

We tried not to get our hopes up and get emotionally invested for fear of a big letdown. Nevertheless this loss was extremely painful. .

A precious opportunity for #25 and breaking the GOAT Margaret Court's to stand all alone on the mountain.

Such a hard punch to the gut.

These may very well be our final days on this forum.

i can’t tell you how to feel but keep in mind that your fav Egg seemed in good spirits during his presser and also seemed very motivated to continue. No one has a crystal ball. Egg is a great champion and has surprised the tennis world many times. He could win W — it would not be crazy. Of course I hope he never wins another match.:giggle: And you also have your new fav Carrot. I’m sure those WADA thugs will be cut down to size by CAS and The Snooze will have many titles ahead of him. He will probably give Ben a beatdown in short order which should pick up your spirits.

Also, the Court record is a fake pre-open era record. She should not be considered in the same breath as Egg. She lost to ederly Bobby Riggs when she was #1. :giggle: Additionally, Egg plays on the men’s tour.

You must not leave us. :(

Retha! sorry! By the way, who is Jim Jones, family of Tony Jones or Tom Jones?
I guess you aren’t familiar with the Jonestown Massacre. Shocking stuff, but very worth learning the history of insane cults can be.

I think they used Flavor-Aid instead of name brand Kool-Aid, despite the expression that formed, drinking the Kool-Aid.

Indeed a major disappointment handed to us by an aging tennis actor. Gifting the victory to the Zedrot and to express his support for him thereafter is beyond bad taste. Djokovic ought to retire now if he wants to end his career with some dignity.

The problem is that father time is catching up to Novak. It happened to Federer and Nadal and now Djokovic is realizing the same thing.
He got hurt last year with a torn meniscus that forced him to withdraw from RG and got beaten routinely at Wimbledon by Alcaraz. Now he comes here and has another injury that forces him to retire in the semis. You can never count him out, but it does seem as if it’s going to be hard for his body to hold out for best of five matches over a 2-week span. It feels like the stars would have align in order for him to win another major at this point.

Also his sunk ranking is causing him to play more bigger matches early in the tournaments, increasing the chance of injury. The stars really have to align indeed

I’m still in shock. I really thought Djoker had this tourney and that cost me a lot of money. His play was phenomenal coming into this match. He shredded a pair of seeded players in straights, then had a routine win vs Carlos in 4 solid sets.

I will credit Zverev for making Djoker play all of those extra balls. He was solid today. He took Djoker’s injured leg out with that grinding 81 minute first set.
Honestly, if you wagered a large sum of money on a 37.5 year old to win the AO, then you kind of deserve that for making a silly bet. Even if he was healthy, i had my doubts that he could beat Alcaraz, Zverev and Sinner.

Lmao Djokovic said he would have played on babe? Clearly not a broken leg?

Novak literally said he’d have played on if he won the set! That’s cringe and a spit in the face to the fans don’t you think?

Why didn't he take an MTO to try and get the leg worked on?

He was moving fine before the injury.

Cause the media have seen this enough now and how vocal Mcenroe is this time?

I’d much prefer what Djokovic did today retiring early than when Nadal kept going against fritz at Wimbledon 2022. When your body is fighting you and telling you to stop it best to listen to it.

My theory is that he and Zverev know each other very well, and he must have known that he was not going to beat Zverev on this day, so he retired to save his body.
