Danielle Collins is such a cheat. Took MTO just before Aiava was serving for the second set.

Lost all my respect to Collins. Yuck.

6 former slam champs remain (Sabalenka, Gauff, Osaka, Rybakina, Raducanu and Swiatek).

An additional 7 slam runner ups remain (Pavlyuchenkova, Fernandez, Pegula, Keys, Collins, Paolini, Jabeur).

Also a former Olympic gold medalist Bencic in 2021, silver medalist from 2024 Vekic and bronze medalist in 2021 Svitolina.

Thanks Aussie Darcy

#1 Sabalenka v Tauson = meh, ez win for Sabs
#23 Frech v #14 Andreeva = Interesting close seed battle + young star Andreeva
#12 Shnaider v #18 Vekic = Interesting close seed battle
#27 Pavlyuchenkova v Siegemund = meh

#3 Gauff v #30 Fernandez = Interesting battle of youngsters USO champ vs. Finalist
Osaka v Bencic = battle of moms / GS Champ vs. Olympic gold
#11 Badosa v #17 Kostyuk = close seeds + battle of the babes
Danilovic v #7 Pegula = meh + beautiful danilovic <3

#6 Rybakina v #32 Yastremska = battle of the eastern European tall blonde seeded players
#19 Keys v #10 Collins = battle of the 2nd tier americans
#15 Haddad Maia v Kudermetova = meh
#28 Svitolina v #4 Paolini = battle of the feisty lil women

#8 Navarro v Jabeur = battle of current/former top 10ers + can Jabeur find old form?
#24 Putintseva v #9 Kasatkina = seeded battle (but boring)
Lys v Cristian = Battle of the low ranked babes + LL story
Raducanu v #2 Swiatek = GS Champs + can raducanu make another run

Like others have said, the 3rd round for the women look great. So many interesting match ups. Currently I find WTA first week way more interesting than ATP. But then second week typically switches and ATP second week is way more compelling than WTA second week.

I'd love to watch these if they're at a reasonable EST time (they won't be).

Gauff v Fernandez, it's time for a deep LF run
Osaka v Bencic, battle of the moms, I like both their journeys
Badosa v Kostyuk, hoping Kostyuk can at least match her QF run from last year
Svitolina v Paolini, comeback vs. late bloomer

Lots of other decent matches too, but these are must-watch for me.

Looking forward to the Osaka v Bencic match.

Clearly young Jack Draper has more class than Collins in dealing with a hostile home crowd.

She is a fierce competitor and battled with some illness (endometriosis, arthritis). But I always lose respect to players who take MTO before the opponent serves for the set or the match.

Indeed, she is a fierce competitor. Regarding the MTO before the closing of a set or match, the tennis PTB cannot really pass some rule against it outright, as no one is in a position to tell a player how they feel or when they need help. If a player habitually calls for MTOs, then the individual case needs to be reviewed.

Of interest:

#1 Sabalenka v Tauson = meh, ez win for Sabs

I hope so.

#23 Frech v #14 Andreeva = Interesting close seed battle + young star Andreeva

Difficult to call this one.

#12 Shnaider v #18 Vekic = Interesting close seed battle

Agreed.

#27 Pavlyuchenkova v Siegemund = meh

Agreed.

#3 Gauff v #30 Fernandez = Interesting battle of youngsters USO champ vs. Finalist

This should be one to pay close attention to.

Osaka v Bencic = battle of moms / GS Champ vs. Olympic gold

IF Osaka is on an upswing with her game, this should be a win for her without too much struggle.

#6 Rybakina v #32 Yastremska = battle of the eastern European tall blonde seeded players

In theory, Rybakina should come through..as long as she does not have recent personal issues on her mind.

#19 Keys v #10 Collins = battle of the 2nd tier americans

Collins may have a shot.

#8 Navarro v Jabeur = battle of current/former top 10ers + can Jabeur find old form?

Rooting for Jabeur.

Raducanu v #2 Swiatek = GS Champs + can raducanu make another run

I would love to see Raducanu send Swiatek running from the AO in defeat. Potential match of the event material.

Currently I find WTA first week way more interesting than ATP.

Undoubtedly.

That Collins post match interview and how she acted shortly after the win is going to make big headlines.
Wow, I just watched the replay. I've never seen anything that animated before.

I don't really like Collins, but at first I actually liked her reaction to winning the match. Blowing the kisses, and even the "kiss my backside" thing were actually pretty funny, and not too much for me.

But then her post match interview was just really pathetic. Talking about money she will earn, and taking a fancy vacation by using the money paid by the crowd? That is just PAINFULLY tone deaf and classless. She is trash.

I didn’t watch but anyone who craps on the Aussie crowd has my respect. The French still take the worst crowd award but the Aussies are close seconds.
Aussies are amazing people. Everywhere you go in the world, people usually love them, and they were amazing allies to the Americans in WW2 in the pacific theater.

Clearly young Jack Draper has more class than Collins in dealing with a hostile home crowd.
Also check out Moutet beating Jarry last year in Chile, with one of the most hostile crowds I've ever seen in the sport.

gets her off Tennis Channel here in the States
Not sure which match it was, but she was a courtside commentator on one of the ESPN+ feeds, which was annoying.

She says nothing that is even remotely interesting, and she also manages to come off as arrogant and snobby in the process. Really just a lose-lose, and somebody we don't need on the tennis scene.

didn't get ESPN+ for this tournament so don't have to run into her

I like Coco. Unfiltered. Some men just don't like strong women.

Just catching up with yesterday's matches...

I just watched the Cristian-Bronz highlights and they were absolutely hilarious!
Cristian was not too thrilled with Bronze's grunting (greatly delayed too).
So she started to grunt herself for a few games. :)
The grunts were obviously contrived, so outrageous were they.
On any Cristian shot where she had to give her full concentration of course the grunts were completely gone. :)
----------
I loved Collins' reaction to the crowd booing her after her victory!
Priceless. :)
----------
Somebody's obviously been coaching Maia on her grunts.
They're not nearly as obnoxious as before. :)

Is it me or Sabalenka is not that convincing compared to last year?
1R she was great, 2R definitely didn't look convincing but still managed to overturn that 2nd set deficit to win in straights.

This match, also definitely not convincing.

If Mirra wins her 3R (which i'm unsure of given how she looked in her 2R) then that 4R match could be very tight. Mirra did beat Sabs at the French Open QF last year, although Sabalenka handled her easily here in Brisbane 2 weeks back.
