There it is - 6-1; 6-2, and Iga Swiatek marches on taking out #8-seed Emma Navarro, who gave it an effort but was just overmatched.

Ladies SF's - Sabalenka/Badosa and Swiatek/Keys......some heavy hitting, a little shrieking and some grunting coming up.

Are we going to get the Sabalenka/Swiatek showdown? We shall see.

What an idiotic statement. Navarro is far better than decent. Siniakova, who is the #1 doubles player in the world, is also tough to play. And no, Badosa is not beating Sabalenka.
Navarro is better than decent? Yup, sure. She‘s just another version of Kasatkina.

Where’s the fun in watching a doping terminator destroy someone in the most boring fashion?
So you placed a bet on Emma, didn't you? Probably over/under on games and 12 games to 3 didn't cut it?

First, Iga was cleared of doping by two different agencies. Second, it was fun watching Swiatek's changes in her game. As per her new coach, she's hitting a lot more topspin on hard court and that's given her more control as she paints the lines. She's clearly the most in-form player in the tournament and is playing beautiful tennis.

Yeah had over 15.5 haha good guess. Not that bothered didn’t have a huge amount riding on, just painful to watch. I don’t find moonball defence beautiful to watch but fair enough.

WADA‘s head is a former Polish minister of sport. Do you seriously think they would have a trial against Iga? He obviously prioritises Polish national and economic interests. As of now Iga is an important part of Polish economy.

You act like that's an insult but Kasatkina has beaten Sabalenka twice and Navarro's beaten her once and beaten Gauff twice. So yeah, better than decent.

It‘s not an insult. Kasatkina is a brilliant, but somehow limited player. So is Navarro.

Do you even know anything about this case? Iga was taking legal melatonin, which was contaminated with trimetazidine, which is what she tested positive for. Unopened vials of Iga's melatonin were tested and shown to be contaminated and the pharmaceutical company LEK-AM admitted to it, saying "Trace amounts of contamination detected in the tested drug packages are significantly below the permissible standard."

This is an explanation her team and her PR agency came up with. But everybody is free to believe whatever they want to believe.

Congrats to Keys for a great match. She was killer at the net. At one point late, she was 22/24 from the net.

Keys was fantastic, and she cannot be counted out as a legitimate threat.

Swiatek is playing amazing. Credit goes to melatonin that is helping her sleep and wake up energised in the morning.

Good drugs will do that for you, and Swiatek knows all about that.

Doper catches a few lines and ends up breaking. Boring.

Yep.

Geez I just tuned in and it's already a 6-1 blowout. Can't she at least take her time for change?
I remember that thread someone made a few weeks ago about fancying a quickie and then it showed a history of insanely ahortyFederer matches. I kind of feel like Iga is doing the same with this tournament. She has yet to drop a set, and has been in full demolition mode.
I mean look at her 5 matches thus far:
R1 def Siniakova 6-3, 6-4 in 1 hr and 21 mins
R2 def Sramkova 6-0, 6-2 in 1 hour flat
R3 def Raducanu 6-1 6-0 in 1 hour and 10 mins
R4 def Lys 6-0, 6-1 in 59 minutes
QF def Navarro 6-1, 6-2 in 1 hour and 29 minutes

Lot of bakery products in there too

And don't forget, she delivered some bakery goods to Key in the past, 4 breadsticks and 1 delicious https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obwarzanek_krakowski#/media/File:Obwarzanek_mak.jpg

For this to work, the doping agency that penalized her for a month would have to be in on it too, but if that were the case, then why would they penalize her to begin with? For this to work, the pharmaceutical company would also have to be on it, but how does admitting to having a contaminated product help that company? No, you're just engaging in psychological denial and conspiracy theories with no basis in fact.

But the others didn't get Lys and Raducanu :-D I am sure Graf would have won with one hand tied behind her back, Seles too.
Graf's 1989 AO competition was actually weaker than Swiatek's current run. Graf started off by playing Kerry Anne Guse who had no ranking at all, so not even a top 1000 player. From there, Graf played #95, #113, #32, and #12 to reach the semis for an average rank of #63, not counting the unranked player. Swiatek has played #50, #49, #61, #128, and #8 for an average rank of #59 in the competition.

EDIT: Just checked Graf's run in 1988 and the average rank of her competition through the quarterfinals was an even far weaker #85.

Navarro will be the women's version of Ferrer. A 6-to-10 ranked player who gets the qtrs (maybe a semi) but her weapons are easily neutralized or handled by the real top 4 players. (Sabs, Iga, Rybakina). I've watched her in January and her FH consistently lands short in the box. Maybe the reason for her 3 set 50/50 matches.

I mean I think she has beaten all those players. I would have to check. But I know she has beaten some top players.

She's beaten CoCo & maybe Pegula. She gets pushed around too easy by Sabs and clearly by Iga and her first serve is a liability. Sabalenka just plays nervous in slam finals and overhits and makes a easy win a bit closer than what it should be; like Carlos does.

I think she beat SaBs. Yea just looked it up. She is 1-2 against her.

She beat hear at IW 2204 the slowest HC on the tour. Their other more recent matches were one-sided.
But then she lost to Sakkari in the next rd, yikes.
Well, maybe this means Emma should do well at the FO.

I mean Im just not into writing a player off who literally vaulted from 100 to top 10 in like 18 months. I understand what you are saying. Ferrer is a good comparison. But to me the idea how people see a dominate player and think well, player x is never gonna win because of player y. One bad knee injury to SABs and the conversation totally changes. You just dont know.

Well, a major injury to any top player would cause them to start losing.
100 to top 10 is great yet the point is about her losing to those two and the way she lost by being pushed around with ease and them hitting winners off her serve.
For her to win, she needs major changes to her first serve and her FH needs to stop landing so shallow.

I saw an interview with Chris Evert once. Martina had gotten in shape and was just crushing people. Like smoking them. Including Chris Evert. She said she had to adjust her game and get in much better shape to compete. Well later in their respective careers she was able to do just that. Maybe not win the majority but she had put herself in the best possible place in order to compete with her.

All these players on tour are always attempting to improve, and compete with the top ones. No one sits still. If she is 28 and still getting creamed by the top gals I will concede your point. Until then I will withhold judgement.

Yikes, so the WTA was bad even then. When did she win the golden slam 88?
