Bublik is here

I’ve always been fascinated by athletes who aren’t consistently elite, but when they do hit their peak, it’s nothing short of divine. I'm talking about the ones with an average baseline, but when they catch fire? God mode.
The ones who blur the line between mediocrity and immortality, sometimes within the same week. You know they’ll come crashing back to earth but for a moment, they bend reality.

Nobody may remember that Bublik saved five break points in the final game of the match when he was serving for it. He ending winning the match on his second match point.
Who knows what would have happened if he could not hold that serve game?

He might have lost if he had been broken! He was so tight that he couldn’t hit any first serves for most of that game, but the longer it went he loosened up and hit some key serves when he needed it. Credit to him for winning several points in that game with his second serves also.

Unfortunately, Rafa met a bunch of them at Wimbledon between 2012 and 2017:(

Djokovic has not lost a set so far and seems to be rounding into good form in the last two weeks. We have to give credit to his new coach as it has been an instantaneous revival since Vemic took over - better serving, more aggression from the baseline, better error tolerance in long rallies.

Maybe we should take his chances against Zverev in the QF seriously, if not against Sinner in a possible semi. He has beaten Zverev in straight sets at RG before but it was a long time ago in 2019. Zverev beat him in the Rome final, but it was even more in the past in 2017. I’m surprised that two of the better players on clay have met only twice.

Who will the oddsmakers favor in this QF clash? Zverev is the higher seed, but Djokovic has the gaudy trophy case including the more stellar FO track record with 3 FO titles, 4 more finals and 5 more semifinals. He has made his 19th QF and lost 6 times in that round - twice early before his career took off in 2011, twice during his career lull in 2017-2018, last year with a walkover and the other time to Rafa in 2022. Zverev has the game, but does he have the cojones to take him out? Or is Sascha just a bully who can only slap around weaker people?
