In this tournament so far -
Defending champion Alcaraz has struggled in all 3 of his matches after an easy 1R, dropping a set each to Marozsan, Dzhumur & Shelton.
Paul on the other hand had a somewhat straightforward 4R win over Alexei Popyrin in R4; however, he's played two 5 setters in R2 & R3, coming back from 2-0 sets down against Fuscovics in the former.

Who wins? How many sets?

Voted Alcaraz in 4 because it sure as **** ain’t gonna be Alcaraz in straights lol.

Paul had the easy match he needed last round but I still think the five-setters and ab issue will catch up with him as this one wears on. Plus he just doesn’t quite have the weight of shot for clay. But still should be able to scrap and claw his way to a set. Always enjoy matches between these two.

Paul is without a doubt the best American and definitely the best American on clay. Alcaraz will win this but should be a tough match. Between Alcaraz in 4 and 5 but picked 5 because I want to see a battle.

Not Shelton on clay?

Not Shelton on clay?
No definitely not. Shelton has done well to improve on clay and played a good match yesterday but Paul much more experienced and comfortable on this surface. Tommy Paul has made the SF at Rome twice and won this tournament as a junior. Much more comfortable in extended rallies and a better mover than Shelton even if he doesn't have the same top-end weapons

Alcaraz hasn’t struggled. Dropping a set and winning in 4 doesn’t amount to struggling. By that metric unless a player wins in straights, they are struggling.

Alcaraz' comments to the Spanish press after the Dzumir match sure made it sound like he felt that to be a struggle though.

Tommy “first name basis” Paul may cause some problems but I figure Alcaraz is getting into some good form and will have too much for him, potentially even shocking the world with a (tight) straight sets win.

Good call.

Alcaraz in 4 is the most logical prediction. As boring as that prediction is; I have to go with it. Alcaraz will dish out a breadstick in that win.

..though he could munch on a breadstick as well. Calros is a very good player, but I'm not taken with him (so far).
Maybe Carrot will step up.

Alcaraz in 4

I've gone with Alca in 4.
There will be a dip just to feed some hope in and more excitement for us, but overall Alca will be full of irresistible jumping beans for this one.

Yeah he's been playing well. I think some credit should be given to Dzumhur and Shelton for playing great tennis. Alcaraz's game has been solid overall and as an Alcaraz fan I'd admit if he was playing poor.
Tommy will push him but he just doesn't have the weapons to win 3 sets from Alcaraz on this surface.

You are right. Sometimes you got to praise the opponents for playing great tennis and getting a set. However, despite this alcaraz has not been in any danger of losing these matches.

The longer matches will toughen the spainard up too. I see it as all positive for alcaraz as he looks to defend his title again.

This is my point really. Both his opponents played at a high level, Dzumhur for 2 sets, and Shelton for the entire match. Alcaraz’s level of play has responded in kind. I don’t call that struggling. I made my comment as a result of the OP’s use of the term whilst failing to attribute the same term to Paul for his two 5 setters.
Alcaraz seems to be overly criticised here whether he wins or loses, whilst other players are not subject to the same critique whilst also dropping sets.

Alcaraz has been tested a lot more compared to the likes of sinner/zverev/djokovic so far

The people saying he is struggling are all Sinner fans wishcasting

That's because many individuals are fixating that Alcaraz is the new Nadal 2.0 when Nadal dominated the first week regardless who was in front of him while Alcaraz drops a set here and there.

Some should just accept that Alcaraz plays differently, might not achieve what Nadal did at the same rate and just enjoy the way he plays.

I hadn’t thought of it that way. He is incredibly talented and it’s frustrating when people can’t just enjoy what he brings to the game and admire it.
