they gave sabalenka a tougher draw than iga but still expect her to get through. they put most of the big hitters like rybakina that bother iga on sabalenka's side including ostapenko lol kalinskaya might give her trouble but doubt she will win. coco and pegula have easy draws for first few rounds

Ito is through to the main draw. Shouldn't need to qualify anymore after this to many higher level WTA tourney. Oh my, she has a LOT of fans waiting for her signature.

The Rybakina / Paolini section is pretty insane also having Kudermetova, Raducanu, Vondrousova, Kessler, and Jovic. That Mboko / Krejcikova / Danilovic portion of the draw is also super competitive, and it's a coin flip who comes out of the Kenin / Krueger / Collins / Cristian section.

Zheng and Badosa are out with injury, but they have had a pretty mixed year anyway and probably would not have gone very deep.

Swiatek has been playing well and with confidence to the point that I feel like she may be favored over Sabalenka here. Sabalenka has got immense pressure to defend the title given her slam losses this year and she's got to be praying that Rybakina doesn't reach the quarterfinals. Shnaider has lost her consistency so I expect Alexandrova to get by there, and she will probably be Swiatek's toughest test until Anisimova in the quarters, then likely Gauff or Keys in the semis.

Looks like Ito will be playing against ex-Pepperdine ITA All-American Janice Tjen (INA). I saw a few of her matches before, looked pretty solid. She has had a meteoric rise in ranking. Was ranked 700+ just a year ago and at #149 now. There's rarely any Indonesian player who makes it to the main singles draw of a GS. The last time was more than 20yrs ago. Might be an interesting qualie match.

Blockbuster 1st rd. matches:

Krej - Mboko (Unfair in my opinion. Worthy of a final)
Boulter - Kosty
Rakhi - Garcia
Vekic - Bouzas
Eala - Tauson
Kessler - Linette
Pavly - Yastrem

Some assorted surprises for me:
- Branstine out in the 1st round of qualies, thought she was doing well lately
- Fruity1 out in the 1st round, haven't been following her, but I thought she was improving - or is she the one that struggled with the mental side?
- Bernarda out in the 1st round (not that much of a surprise)
- Jana Fett (the near-Woz slayer) is not only still playing, but also in the final round of te qualies, and
- Dasha "Gavrilova" Saville went out in the first match

The new WTA 'rebranded' web site is maybe 'prettier', but is lacking information. The site used to have Ranking History where you can see several years ranking curve of a player. After the web site overhaul, they've removed that information.

Who is the guy yelling at each of Priscilla Hon's matches? He's equal parts hilarious and annoying. Every now and then you get a glimpse of Hon laughing at his antics too.

Wow Ostapenko too, definitely fixed for Iga to win.

Hopefully the right Anisimova shows up, unless she has forgotten the humiliating bagels in Wimby and in the finals of all matches.

Absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event Sab should make it to the semi's.
Iga should also have a cakewalk to the semi's.
On the other hand, Mirreeva has a very challenging draw.
Keys and Coco will be up against a slew of tough players.

I'm hoping for an Andreeva/Mboko 4th round matchup. It could kind of resemble that Sinner/Alcaraz "glimpse into the future" 4th round match at the US Open 3 years ago.

These were "surprises"?

Over-advertised Branstine lost to very dangerous Chinese player that has been even to top 50. Absolutely no surprise there.
"Fruity1" has been quite good lately and has improved in some of her former weaknesses but here also the opponent was the main factor. Petra Martic used to be threat to almost everybody on tour earlier (especially on clay and grass, hard courts have been her weakest surface) and still has weapons to hurt anybody. But the main point is her playing style is Kryptonite for player like Fruity1. The match went very much like I awaited it to go, though I hoped something totally different... :(
Saville also lost to player that can be super-dangerous - but is very uneven - and has had e.g. very impressive run in FO in the past.

The most unpleasant surprise losing for me in the qualies was Tomova losing in the second qual round to some Wandewinkel. :(

Of the players that have qualified or are about to do so Tjen, Akli and Inoue are totally obscure players for me.

I think the younger one, Brenda, made a post about mental struggles. She hasn’t played since March. Both her and Linda seem to have struggled with injuries. They’ve been surpassed by Valentova now. Brenda is apparently coming back in September, we’ll see if the break helped her or not.

I can see Sabalenka going out early-ish in this tournament. She's not been right since the French.

She'll probably have Rybakina in R4 and I don't see her winning that one.

Reminder that Rybakina is terrible at the US Open. Not only has she never made the QF, she’s never even made the 4R. And she’s only made the 3R twice.

It's crazy that Mboko is already seeded and Krejcikova this time is not!

Oopsie, that Niemeier's second week run was in Wimbledon, not FO. :giggle: Somehow I'd expect her to be more a claycourter than grasscourter...

Short, black player from USA, Akli, didn't make through the qualies after all. That Selekhmeteva that defeated her in the last qualies match didn't look bad at all. Russians have amazingly long row of "lookers"!

Iga seems to have gotten "half-byes" from the organizers to the 3rd round!??
