One area Carlos can keep improving is his second serve points won, especially in terms of consistency. His first serve has improved out of sight this year, but as the saying goes “you’re only as good as your second.”

I think he won something like 33% in that second set.

He was due to slip, since he won 86% of his 2nd serve points in the first set. Overall, he won 57% of his 2nd serve points for the match. You will win the vast majority of your matches when that number is at 55%. And to do that against a monster baseliner like Sinner on hard courts is incredible. Alcaraz was nearly perfect this match. This easily could have been a straight set curb-stomping, except that Sinner converted the only BP opportunity that he had during the entire match. Holding Sinner to 1 BP opportunity for the match on hard courts is nearly an impossible feat since that guy entered his prime in 2024.

For last two years these two have spilt the slams at 2-2. Total domination like Big players..
Its great for tennis, Alcaraz-Sinner have ALMOST completely replaced the Big3, so the world has this rivalry to hype up constantly :P
Now we just need Nadal to make a comeback next year to complete the Big3 and bring the Slam Record back into the spotlight as Nadal chases #23 and #24.

But if Sinner really is injured (looked like he just broke up Felix's momentum with a timeout), his future looks bleak, because he hasn't had a hectic year at all.
If he can't handle a year where he didn't even play Indian Wells/Miami/Monte Carlo/Madrid, no hope surviving a full schedule.
He's known for excuses, like when he had a "virus" in Cincy but kept hugging and shaking hands with everyone all the way to New York.

quote speaks for itself

I liked this portion a lot:
He (Jannik) said he watches a lot of my matches just to study my game. I do the same, I watch a lot of his matches. First of all because I love watching him play, I think it's unbelievable what he is doing. Secondly it's because I love to study him, how he plays, how he feels (?) at tournaments
Cool to hear him say such complimentary things about Jannik, and cool that he just enjoys watching Jannik's matches.

Didn't Nadal say something similar before the 2020 RG final against Djokovic?
:)

Here you go:

Yep and Sinner won 33% of 2nd Serves in the 1st Set.
And Sinner won 29% of 2nd Serves in the 3rd Set, epic!

Can anyone step up? I'm surprised we've gone from the Big 3 to the Big 2 so quickly. There was no real in between period with a lot of different players getting a shot. I like having dominant players in a given era - to a degree; not THIS dominant. I'd like 2-4 others to be the occasional, just occasional, spoilers. But there's literally no one right now who looks like they could do it. So Sinner and Alcaraz are very deservedly lapping up the titles.

IF Alcaraz didn't exist, I would support the notion of watching 5 or 6 players duke it out and share the slam titles.
But at least its only a Big2 and not a Big3, and if the Big2 are ever injured or upset, an outsider will snatch something.

Of course, there is a big difference between Alcaraz AND Sinner both being upset/injured at the same time, and only ONE of them.
That's the problem, if only ONE of the big2 is eliminated, then the other will probably have an easily Slam Final (debut finalists tend to get nervous).

The only solution to this, is BRING BACK NADAL, he'll be the outsider who can contend (if his brief retirement has refreshed his body without creating irreversible rust).

I think it will be easier for outsiders to win the odd Slam here and there if we happen to have a "big 2" era in the next few years.
Even with the big 3 (and the ridiculous "big 4") there were chances for the likes of Del Potro, Cilic and Wawrinka, and it's much more difficult to distribute all four Slams between two people without a leak here or there.
But with the media being so eager to attribute "big 4" status to Murray, however, we can imagine a player winning two Slams to Alcaraz and Sinner's 10+ Slams... and there we have it again: a big 3.

I read somewhere that Alcaraz only faced 10 breakpoints in the 7 matches he played here.
Is this true?

If true, it's one of the greatest serve stats of the Open era: better than Sampras or Federer at Wimbledon.
I have a hard time believing it.
Only the 3rd time that a player dropped three or less service games en route to winning a major title.

Pete dropped 3 and 2 at WO 94 and 97.

Alcaraz faced only 10 break points in the tournament, the least for any player while winning a Grand Slam since 1991, bettering Sampras (12) at the ’93 US Open.
