Siegmund looked like a 3.5 player yesterday too. I was in a July 4th doubles drills (point play) and I stood just inside the service line and watched the ball sail back and forth over my head. ...until we moved up to the lead courts

Anisimova, yes, and that's why I don't think there's much chance of the Anisimova v Swiatek final that I mentioned in my previous post. Not sure about Swiatek. Sure, she will appreciate fewer slices, but Swiatek is so much more solid than Anisimova.

Talking of doubles, why is the mixed doubles final tomorrow? Isn't that a bit early? They used to hold it as the last match of the tournament on the second Sunday after the men's singles final.

Mirra's feel for the drop shot/dink shot is suspect. Missed far too many.
Those loopers are giving her opponents time to get into position and fire at will.
Flatten them out dear!
Hopefully this loss will get Martinez to fix these things, because Mirra will likely never do it on her own.
I just saw Martinez shaking her head after Mirra won another unnecessarily long rally.

Instead of dinking the ball over the net for an easy winner she whips the ball out of the court! Now 2-4. Only herself to blame.
At least she didn't smash her racket.

They used to have Mens double, Womens double, and Ws single on the same day and Mx and Ms the following. Now they follow the other slam schedule. Either due to Sunday final moved earlier or Thursday only has 2 Women's matches.

That will be an intriguing semifinal. Hsieh and Ostapenko overcame Cirstea and Kalinskaya, both much better known for singles play but both were out after the second round in singles (as was Ostapenko).

Siegemund is exactly who I thought of who plays that way because she has to. Andreeva should be a lot more aggressive with the tools she has especially on big points. Shes still so young though so there's plenty of time for her to grow into it.

Yes we need to be patient with Mirra (our expectations).
She already has the tools needed to go further.
It's a matter of her learning when to use each of her shots.
The are two main departments:
Skills/talent and knowledge/experience
She's lacking much more in the second department.
Today's match really could have gone either way.
Bencic's knowledge/experience got the upper hand over Mirra's
still developing skills/talent.
Mirra played poorly in both tie-breaks. That's where she could
have used more knowledge/experience.

Yes, Bencic can be really charming. Classy, elegant, beautiful... she's great.
Huh? Every player gets annoyed when they start making bad mistakes or things like that. She doesn't lash out in any particularly bad way (like Andy Murray or Kygrious or something).
I think people forget that Andreeva has a LONG way to go in terms of her mental strength. She has thrown away a lot of matches this year because she lost the plot mentally.
Like so many others, she clearly gets pretty tight on big points, and that is why she resorts to a lot of slicing. I think it will get better with age.

Very happy for Bencic. Disappointing for Andreeva, she's still only 18 but is making a habit of losing winnable matches. That's back to back slam QF's where she really should have won the match.

Bencic's year has been a very strong one, only getting derailed the last 2 months by an injury which saw her retire in Rome against Sakkari and then withdraw from the French Open. She played just the one match on grass getting smoked by Alexandrova 6-1 6-2 but has turned it around here.

Belinda started the year ranked #421.
Got a WC in qualies in Adelaide which included beating fellow Wimbledon QFist Siegemund and then made the 2R losing to another Wimbledon QFist Samsonova.
Used her Protected Ranking at the Aus Open and made the 4R beating Ostapenko and Osaka before losing to Gauff in 3 sets.
Got a WC In Abu Dhabi and actually won the 500 title including beating Kudermetova (double bagel), Vondrousova, Rybakina and Krueger.
Used her Protected Ranking in Dubai making the 2R where she pushed top 10 Navarro to 3 sets.
Got a WC in Indian Wells and made the QF's with huge wins over T Maria, Anisimova, Shnaider and Gauff.
Made the 2R into Miami losing to Svitolina.
Lost 1R in Charleston to Kenin including getting bagelled.
Made the 4R in Madrid beating Tauson and Haddad Maia.
Then she retired in Rome down a set to Sakkari, withdrew from the French Open and as mentioned just the one match on grass.
Now with the SF in Wimbledon she's up to #20 in the world.
From #421 to #20 in 7 months. Mammoth.

Also, Bencic is looking to be the first mum to win Wimbledon since Evonne Goolagong-Cawley won the title in 1980 and the first mum to a win a slam since Kim Clijsters won the 2011 Australian Open (along with the 2010 and 2009 US Open).
Azarenka came close at the 2020 US Open losing in 3 sets to Osaka and of course Serena came close four times losing the 2018 & 2019 Wimbledon finals and 2018 & 2019 US Open finals.
Huge task next though against #8 Swiatek.

Yeah these matches were winnable and it's probably disapponting for her, but still. She is in QF of every big tournaments (Slams and 1000) she played since Dubaï. Won Dubaï and Indian Wells. Lost in QF of Madrid, Rome, RG and Wimbledon. Yeah for a 18yo, that's not too bad. Most 18 don't have this kind of consistency. She can only improve her game from now on.

Andreeva has that little distraction of being a glamour queen and getting all that endorsements. Her net play and volleys were atrocious and bencic was making her come to net all the time
An interesting women's semi-final line-up involving:

- The most successful active player in Swiatek appearing in her first ever Wimbledon semi-final. She has a lot of struggles this year (and during the back end of last year), especially for her high standards, but has looked more comfortable than ever before on grass.
- Anisimova who received a huge amount of hype when she was a teenager, also appearing in her first ever Wimbledon semi-final, and first grand slam semi-final since 2019. She has overcome the death of her father, mental health struggles and hip and back injuries. At Wimbledon last year, she lost in the final round of qualifying.

If the final is Aryna-Iga, I believe that Iga will win, as he has a perfect 5:0 record in the GS finals, handles the atmosphere of big matches better and will have extra motivation to avenge the loss at RG. Aryna, on the other hand, will be under pressure from a possible third loss in the GS finals in a row.

Just catching up with today's matches.
Joined the Bencic match at the end of the 1st set.
Iga was pushing Bencic around the way Mirra should have (she has the ability).
First game of second set Iga got tight but Bencic couldn't capitalize on two break points.
From then on it was smooth sailing for Iga.
Then I learned of Amanda's huge upset win over Sab. I was ecstatic! She silenced the beast.
You can now scream into your TV set all you want Sab watching the final from your couch.
I'll be the happiest man in the world if Amanda can somehow win the final.
What has struck me the most about Amanda's recent improvement has been her movement and
anticipation. Way way better than it was even a year ago.

well the Wimbledon final is between 2 players that made a grasscourt final this season, wonder when the last time that happened? And no week off for Swiatek, came straight to Wimbledon after losing final of Bad Homburg.

Valdmannova saved a match point before going on to win and move on to the semis. She then teamed up with 15-year-old Kristina Penickova to beat the #2-seeds Emma Jones and Jeline Vandromme 7-6 (9-7), 6-2, again to move on into the semis. In the girls juniors quarterfinals, the #1, #2, #3, and #5 seeds all lost, with #6 being the only seed reaching the final four.

Yet again I get my dream of a Sabalenka v Swiatek slam final pulled away at the very last stage. Why must this keep happening.
At least they faced off in the SF of the French, but that would've been the dream final here between the 2 most consistent players of the last few years.
Very happy for Anisimova though. Great win.

Strange history for Amanda.
Just 23 yrs. old but been on tour for 10 years already!
This is her best showing at slams so far.
Previous to this it was six years ago SF at the F.O.
And let's not forget last year she couldn't get through the qualies here at Wimbie!

Sorry, but that Sabalenka v Anisimova match was absolutely terrible to watch.
It was the perfect example of everything that is wrong with modern day WTA tour. Both just hitting hard and hoping their opponent makes a mistake first, or they happen to generate some slight angle. Zero real tactics.
Most of those games were a complete toss-up. It seemed completely random as to who would miss their shot first. Then throw in the mental factor, where they were both so tight and nervous, and it was just awful viewing.

IMO we will have a dream women's doubles final. I even don't know for whom I'll root for. Hsieh Su-wei can have her 5th Wimby title (which is kinda of a great achievement), Mertens can have her 3rd (not bad either), Kudermetova can finally have a doubles slam she somehow deserves, and Ostapenko is my tennis idol. I wish they could award the final to all of them.

Siniakova still won the mixed, though, so she retains her title of doubles King/Queen maker. Nobody caries her partners to titles like she does.

It's not nearly the same energy as Andy Murray, or Medvedev, or even Ostapenka (I think), who are vicious towards their teams and often ask people to leave.
