2025 WTA Dubai 1000

Tauson has much more to her game than Ostapenko, who mostly hit flat and topspin and is really good at that. Tauson does not rush to the net, but is comfortable with her volleys. Generally I think she has very good hands and feeling and touch with the ball.
if tauson lost that double/triple chin she would probably be better. yikes
ostapenko who i think has actually lost some weight which has helped her lately also has a USOpen doubles trophy and 2 AO runner ups. she can volley but just isn't used much in her singles. she is currently #5 rank in dubs

Hard to predict these semis, which means they could be two long ones. I'll guess the younger ones will both prevail, but in three sets each. This could really be a bookmark moment for Andreeva if she goes on and wins it.

Cheering for Muchova.

She's gone so deep at many big tournaments and yet she has just one career title. A 250 in Korea over 5.5 years ago.

Runner up at the French Open in 2023 to Swiatek, just 2 games away from being a slam champion.
Runner up at Cincy 1000 in 2024 to Gauff.
Runner up at Beijing 1000 in 2024 again to Gauff.

SFist at the 2024 US Open losing to Pegula.
SFist at the 2023 US Open losing again to Gauff.
SFist at the 2021 Aus Open losing to Brady.

She deserves a big title.

What a matchup to watch - Rybakina v Andreeva, two hard-hitters. Their H2H is 1-1, but 1-0 for Rybakina if not counting the exhibition where the played only a set.

Maybe it's just white noise, but I just noticed how loud and busy the sounds of seemingly thousands or millions of birds chirping heard inside this stadium. Apparently this is common in Dubai. Due to its location, it's a passage for millions of birds passing through.

Can someone please teach Rybakina to do split step properly :). On the other hand, she is doing quite all right even without this skill.

This match has had so many momentum shifts, but Andreeva has been a little more consistent. Rybakina really needs to work on shoring up her forehand. It's a weapon when it's on, but it breaks down way too often in any sustained rally.

Taking out Swiatek and Rybakina, Andreeva sure is cementing her rep as a future star. I expect her to have a better career than Gauff.
Gauff still has a long way ahead as well, they are only 3 years apart! But I feel like Mirra can still evolve 1 step further and might dominate the tour since she is a very well rounded player compared to Gauff who rose to prominent early on her athletic ability.

They're kind of both on par in terms of career achievements as teens.
Gauff top 10 at 18 y.o. 3 months, Mirra will be before 18 if she wins Dubai
First title Gauff 15, Mirra ? (17.8 if she wins Dubai)
First 1000 Gauff 19, Mirra ? (17.8 if she wins Dubai)
Best GS result before 18? Gauff QF, Mirra SF at French Open
Top 10 wins before 18? Gauff 5, Mirra 6 (on going)

Gauff is a slam winner after all, so it’s not a low bar. Overall though I see more potential in Mirra. Coco has an interesting ceiling with athletic dominance, big serve, super defensive type… almost like an actualized version of the ATP playstyle of Zverev/Medvedev… but her FH is just so choppy that it’s hard to trust her.

Tauson copped a first set bagel in her first match in Doha last week and then retired against Mertens but this week in Dubai she’s into the final with wins over Svitolina, Noskova, Sabalenka and Muchova?

That’s some turnaround?

They did Clara dirty with this pic.

Honestly both have had incredible runs this week but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t actively cheering for Andreeva. Have tipped her for a slam and think she’s the future star of the sport. No disrespect to Tauson who has played lights out this week and also already has a title this year in Auckland but my heart is cheering for Mirra.

Yeah I'm definitely rooting for Andreeva! No complaints about her game at all. She's radiating the "It" factor. Hopefully she puts it away!

Andreeva physical tennis game has always been good, it is her mental game due to her age which has needed to catch up. Conchita Martinez has done a really good job coaching her. Andreeva has improved so much more since hiring her. it's just a matter of time before she wins a GS.

Watson/Marino are playing each other in Austin 250 qualies this morning, temp will barely be above freezing if it’s not moved indoors. Talk about two names that should probably move on.

And speaking of old names, Christina McHale is also entered into the qualie draw. Appears her last main draw match was Wimbly ‘22.

The doubles final on now with nearly empty stadium - especially the premium seats behind baseline. Such a pity considering how did the quality of this match now.

Siniakova/Townsend took the 1st tight set 7-6(5).

Some the rallies between Siniakova and Ostapenko are quite amusing to watch where they exchanged long (6+) and very deep groundstrokes bullets, followed by amazing ability of Siniakova to lob off during that high speed rallies, then ended by Ostapenko winner curved volleys off of another Siniakova's bullet right at her

Siniakova's often aimed straight at net person's body in returns or during rallies. Probably at least 80+ mph FH or BH drill right at the body.

7-6,6-4 for Ostapenko/Siniakova.

Is Hsieh now sponsored? First time seeing her wearing a kit with wording. That's an Australian-based clothing company Aje Athletica, paired with her own mis-match socks - green stripes on the left and red-stripes on the right, I think.

Congrats to Mirra and welcome in the top 10!

Fun facts (if this list is correct - tennisabstract.com/reports/rankingsByAgeWta.html):

Mirra is the only player in the top 100 who is not yet 18 years old
Mirra is the only player in the top 100 who is not yet 19 years old
Mirra is the only player in the top 100 who is not yet 20 years old

Congrats to Mirra. At 17, I didn't think she was ready for the spotlight, but she clearly was. And the scary thing is, I don't think her level has peaked yet. She hits a good ball, and is fun to watch.

And it appears the very next youngest player in the top 100 in terms of age is a player by the name of…. Andreeva. But elder sister Erika who is 20.

Some family!
