2025 WTA Madrid 1000

That was a disappointing match especially compared to how great was last year's final. I expected more from Coco. Oh well. I'm happy for Aryna though. 4 finals lost for 2 titles this season would have felt weird considering how dominant she is. As successful as Sabalenka is I can't help but to think she could win even more if she was loosen up just a bit more in finals. The game is most certainly there to win a ton.

Very good win for Sabalenka. The best tennis of the day was probably played between 1-1 and 5-3 Coco in the 2nd set. RG should be interesting

Every 2 years, Sabalenka is the Queen of Madrid. Joins Kvitova (2011,2015,2018) as 1 of just 2 players to three-peat at the tournament (2021,2023,2025).
Kvitova was good but i have gone off her for some time now. A very disappointing career wimbledon record when you consider her games potential.

She's always been chaotic results wise a bit like a more stable version of an Ostapenko, but she also benefits more as she's a lefty. I think players with those huge ball striking games just can't be expected to string 7 match wins in a row together and not have huge dips in form.

There is more to her than ostapenko for me. More all court game, more agility and better returns. The serve is a huge differerence with a much more difficult 2nd serve even if it were right handed. She had a height advantage over ostapenko. More tenacity when down in a big match too.

For whatever reason she lost to a lot of worse grasscourters that promptly didnt get much further. I wasnt expecting 7 matches always but she has done quite a bit more than ostapenko in a given season. She was one match iirc from no1 but wasnt quite mentally tough enough when presented the chance.

Doubles final on now. No one cares, I know :D
Kevin Skinner brings the worst in his commentator partner - making Craybas joining him in constant yapping during points. Talking about everything else, but the current match.

Kalinskaya/Cirstea vs. Mertens/Kudermetova has to be one of the most level pairings that have ever existed in terms of singles accomplishments.
It's like they're all more or less the same player.

Yes, very rare that both pairings like these make it to the final. Both pairs are also unseeded.

Not a bad final, despite the scoreline. Enjoyed watching Sabalenka's offense overcome Gauff's defense. The tennis gods will be happy.

Did anyone notice she got obscenity warning today? The ump must have understood Polish or knew a set of swear words in different languages.
Curva!

Max/TNT awaits ...
Luckily these two are not the ones doing the actual coverage. Looks like it'll be Agassi for studio analyst and possibly commentary by Brian Anderson and JMac.
That was pretty funny... and I actually agree with that guy! Why did they rebrand from the French Open to Roland Garros? RG is such a mouthful, and doesn't sound prestigious or important.

Do they think that because Wimbledon isn't the English Open (or the British Open), that they can follow suit? Dumb.

I thought it would be close but Sabalenka played very consistently. All the worst traits of Gauff came out to play. She played nowhere near as well as the semi.
People keep waiting for Gauff to turn a corner, but this is her. And honestly, I only expect it to get worse.

Physically, I don't think Gauff will get any better or fitter, and mentally I think her demons will only get more and more prevalent.

Gauff's mentality is a strange one. She is known for fighting and never giving up, and it's certainly true. She will run and scrap on every point. That said, during the actual points, you can often see her getting tight when it comes to actual technical execution. So it's like she always wants to fight and play hard, but her brain just overthinks it sometimes and gets in the way.

At one point Sabalenka won 17 straight points in the first set, and I would say that was the best stretch. Some of her points were seriously impressive.

Uhm, just to clarify, anywhere other than the English-speaking world (and I think it might be just the US?) this major has always been known as Roland-Garros. People wouldn't even understand what you're talking about if you said "Open de France", "Open de Francia" or "Französische Open". Just to make it clear that you're the minority in thinking the "French Open" nomenclature is prestigious or important. :)

I don't think the "French Open" is particularly prestigious or important, or at least not any more than the US Open. But here in the US, a big tennis playing and watching country, I believe it has always been referred to as the French Open (to go with the US Open, Australian Open and Wimbledon).

Obviously the announcers in that clip were approaching it from an American TV perspective, so I think from that point of view they are right.

I can’t remember which part of the match it was but she hit this extreme cross court angle with her back hand. They reminded me of a Agassi/Nalbandian/Rios type backhand

AK took a bad fall in the 1st set tiebreak almost like Zverev at 2022 RG. Lucky that the only effect was the impromptu fashion statement.
