Tien and Monfils on now. Tien could use a win, as he’s struggled the past couple of months. I don’t know if it’s the racket or if he’s trying to be more aggressive, but he’s been a lot more error prone the past few months. Last season he could put the ball anywhere he wanted, and his game is about angles and precision. Now he’s hitting long and wide a lot more often. Hope he can get going again. It will be tough if Monfils plays like he did his last match.

It was a dumb and greedy move to extend the Masters. Doesn’t surprise me with his track record. I don’t know if it’s the racket Tien trying to be more of a power based player, or both, but it’s not working for him. I can understand wanting to get more out of the serve power wise, but he getting away from his strengths on his ground game has set him back since Geneva. Chang made a similar mistake when he played. Hopefully they both realize this more offensive baseline play style isn’t working. Tien keeps looking at his racket after some of these misses, so I wouldn’t doubt changing rackets has something to do with the increase in errors too.

It seems that way. He won the match tonight, but he had 47 unforced errors. I’m surprised he won to be honest. I’m glad he found a way, but that’s not going to get it done in most matches. If the racket is causing some of it, it might be best to go back to the Blade, but that’s something I definitely wouldn’t know for sure lol.

Tien looking shaky, not good. I expected him to do better at Wimbledon and DC but hopefully he can capitalize on the best part of the year for him, post-USO.

I don't think he would have wanted to come in even if he had a strong chance of grabbing the title. Slams are all that matters for him (possibly OG or maybe another ATP Finals) and he needs more rest. Besides, his off court endeavors don't scream "committed" to me.

Men's tennis is in a weird place. Sinner wins all the time when healthy but you never know when his body will betray him, Alcaraz is injured, Djokovic is a part time player and is nearing the end, the rest of the top 10 outside of Zverev is a hot mess, the not so young anymore but just entering prime incumbents in Fils and Draper are injured all the time, the former next gen guys exiting their prime in Medvedev and Tsitsipas are has beens and the next wave of young talents are too young to compete for big tournaments so now you get the mess that is the current mens tour where Zverev wins a slam without beating anybody of consequence and another slam final where....he beat nobody of consequence outside of Fritz who isn't what he was the previous few years. Now this tournament which is a glorified 500 with this field. Rough stuff
No kidding.
I am betting on qualifier Popyrin who's won this tournament once before.

Being saying all along the Ultra is an issue for Tien, he stopped to look and complain about the racquet not going what he wants in vid vs monfils down 5-0

Yah man, good observations. Tien has a pleasing game, but does seem fragile somehow. Good job to get through.
Le Monf bagelling Tien in the 2nd was noteworthy, dude gave what he could to the end, although looking spent,which is valiant in itself at this stage- the crowd willing him on. Tien is a sweet kid, nice comments about Le Monf, who was given the opportunity to say goodbye to the event once and for all. It's moving when the familiar oldies retire.
Van de Zandchulp seems to be enjoying his campaign here, taking Meds out in straights.
Pleased Mensik and Jodar are through.
Looking forward to Fils/Navone - hope AF can get through.

I'd bet against that. Although 5 of the top 8 seeds failed to get through their opening round, most of the lower seeds did win. Of the final 32, 18 are seeded and only 14 unseeded. It's just mostly lower seeds left.

It’s what I’m thinking too, that he’s not completely comfortable with it. Wouldn’t be under any pressure and hit the ball long, wide, or into the net. I think going back to the Blade would be a good idea.

Yes, though he lost to Jodar last week and is scheduled to play him again in the QFs if they both make it that far.
Injuries have really prevented him making the progress at slams that he's made in 500s and 1000s, so he'll be hoping for a good run at the US Open, where he has never even made R3.

Yah man, good to see the dude looking fit/playing well.
Dipped in and out of the Norrie / ADM match. Initially caught my interest when ADM was 1-4 down in the 1st. Great effort to claw back and win the set. Broke early in the 2nd and was serving for the match at 5-3, got broken back, Norrie taking it to a tb, which he won, and then ran away with it to win by a breadstick in the decider. Another loss from a winning position for ADM. Poor chap.
Jodar/ Musetti; Bergs/Shelton and Atmaine / Mensik will hopefully be well contested.
