The errors that Marta made in that breaker looked like what you see with the 3.0 ladies on Saturday morning at the local club.

The French girl had one winner the whole breaker. Almost all the rest of the points she won were from Kostyuk inexplicably dumping shots. Just wild.

I'm so angry that Marta lost. One of the most unusual results in a tennis match ever. Kostyuk looked in amazing form in Brisbane too.

One thing i will say is that here in Melbourne there is an extremely bad virus going around at the moment. Maybe it affected Marta's ability to get balls in before this match (might explain the amount of errors) or maybe it didn't but one or two players will fall victim to this virus because it is rampant in Melbourne right now and horrible and very strong symptoms.

Come on man, stop clutching at pearls. She played well over 3 hours, she just went full Marta at the end. After getting her bionic foot taped back on.

Tiantsoa taking it to Aryna.
Given TRR's form going into the AO I was thinking she would do well to win 2 games against Sabs - thankfully we have a match on our hands.
Allez Tiantsoa! Loving the tenacity and focus.

Edit: Sabalenka takes the first set 6-4. TRR scrapping and has some lovely groundies when unrushed but Sabalenka rushes people with her pace and then you start to see the opponent spraying more. TRR needs to improve her serve as we could still be in set 1 if it wasn't such a liability.

Looking forward to set 2! Love seeing an up and coming playing showcase their potential on a big stadium court. Hopefully we go to a third but I expect Sabalenka to take this in straights as TRR is having to go for more to pressure Sabs and it's showing in errors. These kinds of matches make you realise why you either have to retrieve like Gauff to frustrate Sabs or knock her off the court like Rybakina/Keys to get the W.

What a disaster for Kostyuk, especially after reaching the Brisbane final with all those great wins.

Yastremska the other seed to fall, although that's a bit more unremarkable I suppose

Its a shocking result for sure. We all saw Marta beat half the Top 10 a week ago. I give Jacquemot huge credit for clutching out that break in the second set but my guess is that something like a virus has interrupted Kostyuk's momentum/prep between Brisvegas and Melbourne for her to have played that badly out of nowhere.

I've only just noticed Qinwen Zheng isn't in this; now down to 25 in the live rankings
She shouldn't have played that one match in China last year - could well have flared her injury up again and now she's missing the AO swing and potentially more. Here's hoping it's not career ending.

I've never heard of Emma's opponent so presumably she'll be alright. I mean, I've 'heard' of Taylor Preston before this year
I haven’t heard of her but she’s on a 5 match winning streak of the back of an ITF75K title last week. Meanwhile, Raducanu has lost 5 of her last 6 matches including to Preston as you mentioned who is ranked lower than this Thai opponent. So it’s not that straight forward.

Emma should win easily in theory but I would never gamble on it because she’s a mess.

Hard to tell with Raducanu. Whether she was invested in the Hobart tournament or just wanted to get to Melbourne is unknown. My main gripe with her is she should be targeting 250 events to win a few tournaments but her mentality seems to want to play/win the big tournaments and given she only has 1 title to date and was injury ravaged I can't see why she's not reset her career and looks to make these incremental advances towards the big time.

Sawangkaew moves well and hits a lot of topspin off both wings and slices the backhand a fair amount too so Raducanu will have to be dialled in.

Danilovic wasn’t even close to being alive when Venus made her debut in 1998. Yet she’s looking like she’ll lose to her today. Venus 45, Danilovic 24.
