Crazy to see so many cancelled matches. Definitely not good for match prep either.

I realized that paolini isn't defending the dubs title this year for some reason.

Also, why didn't guinard grab another partner, knowing that andreozzi was injured? How many potential points is he walking away from?

Just saw that #8 seeds Salisbury/Cabral lost to French wildcards in straights. Ouch.

If he’s switching racquets between return points and serve points, there’s no buffer points in a tiebreak to recalibrate.

Paolini had a bit of an injury and withdrew for precautionary reasons because singles was more of a priority. Errani playing with Tagger, they won their first round, interesting team.
Weird to se Hsieh unseeded, surprised she didn't pair up with another high ranked player.
 
The number of withdrawals, w/os snd retirements in this year‘s RG is unreal. One definitely can see why Slams want to get rid off of doubles in its traditional format. But double players and players who sign up for doubles unfortunately contribute to this too.

Yah man, was sorry to note this. The stars seem to be in a contrary mood at RG this year with the heat/fitness issues.
Surprises already: Reboul/Doumbia ; Salisbury/Cabral; Olivetti/Arribage ( withdrew); Cash/ Tracy – and to my particular disappointment, Glasspool/ Cash in straights - all out.
Pleased Skup/Harr; Helio/Patt; Pavi/Arev are still in it.
 
Today is the last day of the sweltering conditions. Tomorrow it returns to comfortable room temperature conditions, which usually favors the favorites.

Will the heat today claim any more casualties?
 
N/P pulled out of the mixed. Both have bigger-money matches on the line tomorrow, so I hope this is simply a strategic body-protecting move, given it’s a brutal 32C with sun today, with much cooler, milder weather forecast for tomorrow.
 
PHH is still one of the best doubles players in the world. And he made his mark on his home slam today by ousting AO champs H/S.

Skupski is back to #1 in the live rankings, but he will have to pray for help to hold onto it, with H/P and G/Z close behind him and still in the tournament.

Man, the men's dubs draw is almost as bereft of top players as the singles.
Yesterday,Skup / Harr couldn’t find the gumption to force a decider. Today, Putz/Kraw caved to Bala/Demo in straights. Arev/Pavi made more of a fight of it but nevertheless exit the event. Some of seeds remaining but for how long- Nys/Rog-Vas; Patt/Helio; Vava/Bole.

Watched Erra/Vava attack their way past Stoll/Harri yesterday in the decider – and they routined their opponents today, into the sf. Watched Skup/Kraw yesterday too, play well together. Hope they can keep going, but Erra/Vava look as though negotiations are not an option, put them as the more likely winners here.
 
Man, know zilch about Nouza/Oberleitner, but they made a match of it against Bole/Vava, who are through to the sf. Will the 1st and 2nd seeds also make the sf's?

In the mixed, pity Skup/Kraw are out. Outplayed in a close contest - out in straights to Sieg/Rog-Vas. Dabr/King through to the sf via a walkover. Some have luck, others a battle. 'tis the way of the world.

Vavassouri saved mp at 8-9 in the match tiebreak with N/O trying to wall off the net, by sneaking a touch bh slice angle over the net in front of them off a short angle volley.

I watched this point again carefully. It’s all over insta.

Poor Nouza made a positioning error after volleying his crosscourt bh volley short angle. This volley was the first one in the rally that gave N/O command of the point. His return was also a good shot, which is why he followed it to the net, but Vava hit a great bh pickup after that to set up the fateful 2-up-2-back pivotal exchange.

He slid toward the centerline as he should have, but instead of staying tight on the net and textbook to cover the crosscourt pass, he inexplicably stayed a step further from the net than his partner Oberleitner, who was correctly positioned. Rec player positioning error. I didn’t watch the match, so maybe he was wary of the flick lob? He was basically not contributing much court coverage from that position.

Doubles veteran and 3-time slam finalist Vavassouri sensed the weak formation immediately and took advantage. And so he advances, and Nouza goes home.

Hear you man, always tough to lose by these hairline margins. Interesting observations regarding positioning. Really like the energy Nouza / Oberleitner brought to the 1st set and decider, but the Italians were superb in the 2nd. Play the top seeds next.
Pleased to see Helio/Patt through -Gren/Zeba and Herb/Haly also through. All in rather routine straights, so energy conserved.
Looking forward to the sf's.

Fun factoid:

H/P have played in 4 slam semi or final matches. They were significant underdogs in the odds in all 4 matches, but went 4-0.

This will be the first time they will play this deep in a slam as a favorite. And they will face off in hostile territory against the hometown French squad.
 
G/Z vs. B/V semifinal opened as a pick-‘em on Sofascore… but a lot of early money must have come in on the defending champs…

G/Z are now a slight favorite.

But I kind of like the Italians to advance, given Vava is the only guy with young legs of the 4. I give Italians 60% chance.

Did you watch Helio/Patt? Good job by them to make the final – dudes haven’t dropped a set yet, and I think will gain number 1 ranking as a result of this win. Can they get past either the top seeds or Vava/Bole for the title?

As for the mixed dubs, with Erra/Vava playing, the outcome is almost never in doubt. They flew past Sieg / Rog-Vas in the sf, and trumped King / Dabr in the final today. I watched both – the energy and sheer willingness to take it on is impressive. Erra/Vava each bring a determined, attacking mind set,but can also defend well.

King / Dabr looked good in the 1st set and maintained their advantage. Their level dropped- I don’t think King held serve in the 2nd set, and even through Vava was broken, he and Errani retained their advantage to take it. The decider was the Italians to take from the outset, going 3-0 up and never losing their lead even if it fluctuated. Other than the noise Erra makes, this pair is often rewarding to watch.

Dabr is playing the women’s sf too – having a good run here.

The first mixed dubs to defend the FO mixed dubs title apparently. Erra’s 10th major title, aged 39. Vava playing the men’s dubs sf tomorrow.

 
Ouch! Stefani/Dabrowski just got a bagel and breadstick from my girl Townsend and Siniakova. It was sweet revenge from the last tournament, in which the T/S were ousted by S/D.

It's interesting that Errani/Vava are able to win, despite of her serve.

Excited to see the outcome of the men's final.
 
The second men’s semifinal was a bit anticlimactic.

Bolelli rolled his ankle early in the match, and got it taped up at the changeover. His level and mobility were poor after that, and I think this caused Vava to overplay a bit.

In the end, Vava was the only guy to get broken. He played a poor error-laden service game to end the match.

G/Z seemed to be the more strategically polished team. And Zeballos especially has a topspinny game style that elevates his level on the dirt. B/V were allowing chip-lob returns to bounce, giving G/Z an easier way to neutralize first serves and generate return points. Vavassouri got burned a few times trying to pinch the middle when he was at net and other guys were playing every ball to Bolelli’s corner.

Watching from the side — I always try to sit roughly even with one of the baselines — it was apparent that both Granollers and Zeballos have better second serves than than the Italians. Bolelli’s 2nd serve is especially weak for a top-tier doubles guy. I went into the match giving the Italians the edge, but after the first several games, especially after the Bolelli ankle injury, the outcome felt inevitable — I rooted for the Italians to push it to 3 but wasn’t going to happen.

G/Z are 4-0 in sets on red clay against H/P, and haven’t dropped a set in the tourney. They’re also the defending champs.

Bettors have noticed. The line has been moving toward the Argentine-Spanish pair.

Sofascore opened yesterday with H/P as 55% favorite, but within a few hours the line had shifted toward the team with the stronger red clay resume. It’s now a pick’em.

Edit: odds have shifted again further toward the Argentine-Spanish tandem. G/Z are now 55% favorites to win their 3rd slam out of the last 5.

A disappointing final, but my guys gave it a go.

The roof on Chatrier was closed, and temperature cool. The slow moist cool clay played slow as molasses, and G/Z played extremely well on it, breaking serve 5x.

They are now 6-0 in sets against H/P on clay. H/P will be #1 on Monday, a small consolation prize.

Agreed, the final was disappointing - had hoped that Helio/Patten would win it. They seemed to settle down by breaking back, second attempt in the 1st set, but lacked the required incisiveness to take it further than the 4 games won.

Gran/Zeba were confident, strategic from the outset- Gran impressive at the net and in his placement. To my eyes, the match was lost early in the 2nd, when not only did Helio/Patt go behind but looked dejected, vulnerable on serve, especially Helio. With Zeba/Gran wasting little opportunity and remaining on the offensive, Helio/Patt probably did well to avoid a bagel/breadstick.

Gran/Zeba defended their title and are brimming with confidence as Wimbledon approaches. It can’t be denied that the 40/41 year olds are worthy champions here.

 
Heard from the ceremony that Danilina/Krunic were in their 3rd slam finals, losing all 3. Krunic is a beast at the net. I assume they'll get one soon.

Townsend earned her 3rd slam title. Siniakova her 11th!?
 
As anticipated, Helio/Patten are joint number 1 dubs players. Good stuff.


The Libema Open 250 is underway, Balla/Ram beat Goran/King in the decider. Ram is 42-interested to see how far he gets! The pair that caught my attention against Vava/Bole at the FO, Nouza / Ober are playing - will keep an eye on them.

Wimbledon dubs entry list not yet published.
 
I got excited to see there's a link now to the doubles entry lists. Don't fall for it! It's just a placeholder pdf file saying that final entries are due Wed 17.

Also, surprised to see that Serena and Mboko won in straights vs. Routliffe/Melichar-Martinez
 
Man, with the plethora of singles dudes playing doubles in Stuttgart and the Libema Open, Arends / Pel did well to clinch the win in a close straight sets final as the home favourites. No such luck for the top seeds in Stuttgart - Cabral / Mektic, who succumbed in the decider to a relatively obscure pair Sakellaridis/Glinka.

Onwards to Queens- seems a good field. Helio/Patten are the top seeds, followed by Glasspool /Cash seeded 2nd and Skupski / Harrison seeded 3rd. 4 of the top 3 seeds are Brits.

Interesting that Halle and Queen's both have a doubles qualifying draw(for one spot), that is a rare sight on tour. Wonder how they decide which events get one. And weird to see Tommy Paul entered in the dubs qualifying!

Interesting observation, man. Noted too that King /Goransson are qualifiers - thought they might be eligible to qualify for the main draw. Paul might be trying to get as much match play on grass as possible.
Fonseca is in the qualifying round in Halle - possibly for similar reasons.

Struff/Hanfmann won in a close decider in Stuttgart- will be keeping an eye on Sakellaridis/Glinka who've played well.
 
Smaller tournaments have a smaller field, so it's harder for lower ranked teams to get in, which seems counterintuitive.

I noticed that ram/Salisbury are teaming up again. I wonder if that means Salisbury and cabral are done. I guess we won't know until the wimby entry list is published. Could just be scheduling differences between partners.

I suspect the Salisbury/Cabral pairing was viewed as a style mismatch failure.

We have our flights for Wimbledon! Probably won't be able to get stadium tickets to see them, but it'll still be fun to be there in person.

My son grew up trying to peg me (and vice versa), so it was funny to us both when he was young and asked Taylor Townsend for lefty dubs advice, and her reply was, "don't be afraid of the ball."

Top 4 seeds at queens each have at least one Wimby champ, 6 in all.

Man, Glass/Cash took the scenic route! Through to the sf's by the skin of their teeth- will play Arev/Pavi who had a relatively straight forward win. Skup/Harr also through in straights, will face Helio / Patt or Stev / Will next. I hope it'll be Helio / Patt.
In Halle, it's a case of 2 halves - one sf between dubs players ( Peers / Gallo and Arri/Oliv ) and the other of singles dudes ( Shelton / Cobolli and Altmaier / Fonseca). Hope one of the dubs teams wins the title.
