2026 Doubles

Christian Harrison has looked like a World #1 this week in Queens, based on the eye test. We will see if that continues today against newly minted World #1s H/P.
Agree that the dude is in excellent form. Harr/Skup down a set, but have gained momentum to go up 4-1 in the 2nd. Great energy from them. They should take it to a decider, looking forward to it.
Glass/Cash ousted rather routinely by Pavi/Arev, who await in the final.

In Halle, Arri/Oliv are through to the final via a walkover. Should be fresh for the final.

Edit : After that spurt in the 2nd, Harr/Skup fell away in the decider, were never a threat and Heli/Patt took it 10-3. Should be a good final tomorrow - hope Heli/Patt can win it.

Looks like the dubs final in Berlin will not be played due to rain(haven't even finished one of the semis)

Wonder how points and prize money works for that situation?

Hey man - As you're no doubt aware, delaying the final that is played another day is unlikely to impact points/prize money. The final was played today and (to my surprise) Errani/ Martinez lost in straights.
Good question though, what if the final can't be played for some reason? Not sure if this is current, but for ATP, the following is an interesting solution:

"..........3) Prize money shall be paid only for matches played. If a final cannot be played, then each finalist shall be paid runner-up prize money. For purposes of this section, a match is played when it is won as a result of a retirement, default, walkoveror no show. (See Exhibit K).........."

From ATP 2019 notes - I don't know how to attach a copy.

In other words, no play, no pay.

Not sure man, as both finalists would be ready / willing but the tournament deciding to cancel the final ( weather / emergency etc.) is not a listed category in my quote. There's bound to be guidance somewhere, but don't currently have the capacity to look further.

Meanwhile, $**^%&!!!!! to Helio / Patt lacklustre performance in the final yesterday at Queens. Arev / Pavi were 5-1 up, their opponents managing to avoid a breadstick. Arev / Pavi pressed from the outset, looking confident and attacking often. The 2nd set was better contested but Helio/Patt semed to be on the defensive for much of it. A tame, straight sets loss in a final was disappointing. Disappointing too that despite the plethora of Brits in the latter stages, none of them could win the title!
Well done to Arev/Pavi for their attacking, incisive game. The 2 returns by Arev in game 9 of the 2nd to build the ensuing break were just outstanding. Not sure why Arev was wearing those leggings though! This is their first title this season, a much needed confidence booster no doubt.

Didn't watch the final in Halle but pleased a 'real' dubs team prevailed. It's Arri/Oliv's second 500 title this season and their 4th overal thus far.

Probably just cold. He's a thin guy. Can't stand his constant grunting, even on volleys!? He was practicing on his own court this year at IW, next to a doubles practice match I was watching, and his grunting was so annoying. He was practicing half volleys w/ a coach, and I couldn't help but be distracted, just from watching a court away. Couldn't imagine being across the net from him, during a match, and he's grunting on every shot, even the finesse shots.

Was 85F (29C) at match start time.

This matters, because H/P have historically been much tougher to beat when the temperature is in the 68F to 82F (moderate temp) range, but very beatable when it’s either cold or very hot.

In fact, H/P have not lost an elimination match on any surface when average match temperature was in the 68F to 82F range since last October a span of 8 months.

Lol

Dubs draw is out. Ram must be hurt, so Ariel Behar is teaming w Salisbury. Lots of singles teams in the draw. #2 seeds Granollers/zeballos arguably have the toughest first round matchup vs. Peers/Galloway. Mektic/Kracijek vs. the new pairing Melo/Molteini should be competitive. Also, interested to see how the lefty/righty Cerundolo bros match up vs. the Gonzalezes.

Hmmmm. So it's been done before!

Heh, heh, I'm a Carlitos fan so no comment on grunting!

Some good outcomes in the lead up to Wimby. In Eastborne, was disappointed that Skupski / Harrison went out by a whisker in the decider, but good win by Nys/Roger-Vasselin in a close final.

Mallorca saw Olivetti / Arribage clinch a close win.

An entirely objective take is that 'real' dubs players winning is always a good result, unless I don't like them!!

Onwards to Wimby.

Christian Harrison continues to dominate on the return game and play at a World #1 level.

He outreturned his partner, Skupski (who was World #1 earlier this year), 23:11 in return points.

H/S dropped a stolen set, but the outcome was never in doubt as they posted a 34:10 dominance ratio, highest of first round so far.

Enjoyed the match, but miffed when they lost the tb. Similarly with Kraw/Putz losing focus in the 2nd set. Pleased at the following getting through: Patten/Helio;Glass/Cash; Arev/Pavi; Bole/Vava.

I don't see A/P losing this. They're too experienced and polished................
Yah man. Were in no mood for shenanigans.

Interested to see whether recent grass court title winners will consolidate their success at Wimby- Olive/Arrib ( Halle & Mallorca); Arev/Pavi ( Queens) and Nys/Roger-Vasselin (Eastbourne).
Also, whether the defending champs Glas / Cash will retain the title. Let's see.

I'm doubtful they can repeat. They've been slumping this year. Last year, the grass season is when they went on a tear, winning almost everything they entered (3 tournaments, including Wimbledon?).

Good reminder, man. Let's see how it goes.

My tennis cup runneth over! Lots of interesting dubs matches today and available on BBCiplayer! And I have the capacity to watch more today! Flicking between them - Kraw/Putz (early days but the Argentines seem up for it); Glass / Cash ( going with serve - nice to see one of my favourites - Nico Mahut there for the Frenchies); Helio/Patt ( going with serve - time to step up and break the cycle!); Skup/Harr (were behind on serve but have clawed back-hope they don't bu**er it up); Arev/Pavi ( the dude Arev in his leggings :) - they're cruising - took 1st set 6-1. Want to see the Brits play better at least);

Despite top-seeded H/P being #1 in the tournament in dominance ratio thru first two rounds, they trailed 4-7 in the match tiebreak today (on the precipice of losing), before running off the last 6 points to close out American young guns Kiger / Trhac.

In today’s match, they outscored their opponents 32:11 in return points, but still needed steely nerves to survive. This underscores the ultra-thin margins and intense mental focus required of top doubles specialists.

Thinner margins also amplify the drama and in turn the entertainment value, something the ATP higher-ups should pay more attention to.

Surprised to see so many tight matches that went to tiebreaks.

Haven't seen even one highlight of a match, yet. @Tallawah Tennis, do you need a subscription to BBC to catch the matches?
Think you can subscribe to the BBC in the US but not sure if this includes BBCiplayer, which is where I watch the Wimby matches. I pay the BBC TV licence fee and get BBCiplayer under that. Here is a link to some information : https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/help/questions/watching-outside-the-uk/reside-outside-uk
Hope you find a way.

Spot on observation. I felt irritated at H/P's seeming inabiity to be more dominant, but the American's posed a real challenge, played well. As for the ATP higher ups, really disappointing attitude.

Thanks, blocked here in the US. I'm flying over tomorrow, landing Monday. Will stand in the queue on Tuesday morning.

Gille/verbeek have taken out the #2 seeds Granollers/zeballos. #9 Nys/R-G are also gone thanks to Ho/Jebens, which is surprising bc they didn't play any grass warm ups together. Thin margins, plenty of tiebreaks. Exciting stuff. ATP should note.

A few seeds were dismissed today, but all of the true contenders remain afloat. #2 G/Z among the ousted seeds, but were not a serious threat on grass.
They should have a title here. They were robbed a couple of years ago on a bad call, saying that Zeballos reached over on a routine put away volley. W/ no replay at the time, there was now way for them to challenge. Replay on tv showed that the ump was wrong.

Hope you enjoy your time at Wimby / in London. Agree that man, thin margins make for exciting matches.

Tomorrow's R16 matches look promising but Monday look like sizzlers! Hope @ey039524 gets to see some of them.

#1 H/P, #7 K/P, and #8 A/G are the first teams through to the QF.

H/P had to work overtime again, coming back from a set down, and again from 1-4, 15-40 down in the 3rd set (effectively facing double match point), to win a match tiebreak for the 2nd match in a row against Pavlavek / Rikl.

I think this title is wide open to whomever gets hot at the right moment. I think H/P are the favorites, having won it before...

... but I've been checking the weather forecast and it's going to get hot at the end of the week.

We should be on the grounds for Tuesday's quarters. Can't wait.

Both Harrison and Skupski are still alive in the mixed, and both guys in their 30s.

With extreme heat, you have to wonder if going double duty in two events compromised their performance against K/K.

Kokk of course famously won a doubles slam. He’s an elite serve talent and hits a heavy ball on the fh wing. Kova also serves extremely well for his height, and gets a lot of aces for a guy a hair under 6’ tall. But both K’s are weak on the bh wing and have sub-par net games.

Don't forget to mention that Kokk's title was at AO, which also birthed a win for Kubler and Hijikata, both great returners, but not guys w a dominant net presence.

The heat wave shrunk the margins for the top teams today, and claimed two more of the top 5 seeds.

The Italians fell to the pair of disrespected but still-proud ex #1s, Krajicek / Mektic. With the last doubles time slot of the day, there was still heat but no sun. This tends to favors dudes who don’t wear hats!

Avg Dominance Ratio for Teams Thru to QF:

1. #3 Cash / Glasspool 2.61
2. #1 Heliovaara / Patten 2.25
3. #6 Arévalo / Pavic 1.62
