World Cup champions?

One of the more random songs to be featured as part of a World Cup soundtrack, probably will be better than any new ones from the upcoming tournament.

Fun fact, Roque Santa Cruz is still playing at age 44.

Is anyone going to watch any of these matches live, in person?
I looked at tickets for fun to see since I’m planning a trip toward the end of June, and they were insane. Looked at group stage matches for France in Philadelphia and New England and the cheapest stuff like nearly 500 per person, with better seats closer to a grand or more.
Opted to go on a European cruise instead, get to see Barcelona, Nice, Portofino, Pisa, Rome and Naples

Now that’s a sensible decision! What a trip.

Yeah it’s weird, England fans are known for travelling well.. ok not necessarily well, their reputation proceeds them. But they travel in numbers. I don’t know anyone who’s interested in going to this World Cup.

I guess price is an issue. America seems to be a bit unhinged in some ways. The commercialisation of the tournament is a bit cringey. Maybe the expanded format too, which I suppose ties into the commercialisation.

It’s probably Englands best chance of winning it in my lifetime, probably got the best manager in the tournament.. but yeah, can’t say I’m overly looking forward to it. Maybe that’ll change when it starts.

Toronto is hosting only 5 matches and yet, the ticket prices are as high as possible. I will take your cruise trip over these pricey matches!

Exciting to see if the Norwegians can do anything. What a run through the qualifying stage...

I have always enjoyed the French team. Platini, Giresse, Tigana - heroes from my childhood. Then Zidane, perhaps the most well-rounded talent ever in football. He was a shift of paradigm in ball control and finesse, as I saw it.

Norway are a team I can see making the QF stage if Haaland and Odegaard turn up.

Norway's strategy used to be built around defensive qualities, which was smart in the 90s, when the team lacked star power. The mid and attack of Norway right now is strong and they seem to have a lot of fun out there.

The time difference means matches are played during the night in Norway, so the politicians are passing contemporary laws that allow pubs to be open until the morning

Having a World Cup final half-time show with Shakira, Madonna and BTS.

Can't get more Yank than that. Time outs soon?

Glad Neymar is playing. Even if he’s washed, he’s still one of those players I always wanna see.

I really like that Luiz Henrique. Not really someone you want starting, but he’s chaos off the bench. Reminds me a bit of Dango Outtara.

Yes, I expect him to be used on second half if things doesn't go well until there, which, honestly, I expect it to happen in most matches.

When Palmeiras faced Botafogo in 2024, whenever Botafogo managed to recover the ball while Palmeiras lines were advanced, I **** my pants in fear.:p

Adeyemi not selected by Germany is odd.

Especially for Sane. He’s been awful the last few years.

Some surprises in the England squad. Maguire, Foden, Lewis Hall, Colwill, Wharton, Palmer and Shaw miss out.

Not actually sure who’s going :-D we taking a 7 man squad? This ain’t a 5 a side tournament, Tommy, lad.

Toney and Hendo in while Kopama stays home is utterly hilarious

Actually the prices seem to be dropping at met life for some games now. Behind the goal is so fun there, but if a South American team isn’t in it should I even go?

Really strange.

I get Foden not going. He’s always been awful for England, completely dropped off the face of the earth the last two seasons and I remember TAA mocking him when talking to friends and family in the stands when he asked to come off against Switzerland at the Euro’s because he didn’t want to take a penalty :-D

No Palmer is weird. He’s not been great, but he makes things happen off the bench. Set up the winner for Watkins in the semi, scored in the final, takes a penalty and let’s not forget, he was player of the tournament at the CWC last year. He knows the stadiums and the conditions.

No Maguire is also weird. I wouldn’t want him starting, but he can see a game out, defends the box well, gets his head on everything, always willing (and very capable) when it comes to high pressure penalty shootouts.

Tuchel is a strange one. Great coach, but awful manager. If you remember when he got manager privileges at Chelsea when Blueco took over, he wanted Koulibaly, Sterling and Aubameyang.

His ability to construct a squad is awful. But give him a good squad and he will do well.

Morgan Gibbs White was robbed

No MGW? Tuchel is turning us into Spurs  I’m having flashbacks to last summer.

No Bowen either. Which isn’t a major blow, but considering all the others who have been left out I’m a bit confused.

Ashley Barnes in, maybe? Adam Armstrong?

Maguire would have done great with Saka and Rice taking corners.

Agreed. We find out what the actual squad looks like tomorrow, but it does feel like it’s probably not going to be overly well rounded.

When I saw Brazils squad, I thought it looked poorly constructed. It seems like England might outdo them on that front!

England squad.

Goalkeepers: Jordan Pickford (Everton), Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), James Trafford (Man City).

Defenders: Reece James (Chelsea), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Jarell Quansah (Bayer Leverkusen), John Stones (Man City), Marc Guehi (Man City), Dan Burn (Newcastle), Nico O'Reilly (Man City), Djed Spence (Tottenham), Tino Livramento (Newcastle).

Midfielders: Declan Rice (Arsenal), Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest), Kobbie Mainoo (Man Utd), Jordan Henderson (Brentford), Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Eberechi Eze (Arsenal).

Forwards: Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Ivan Toney (Al-Ahli), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Marcus Rashford (Barcelona), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle), Noni Madueke (Arsenal).

Tuchel is either a genius and seeing something no one else can see or he’s on crack. Guess we’ll find out.

Tuchel is a champions league winning manager so maybe I should shut my mouth and reserve judgement until the games have been played.
haha Yeah, my first reaction was thinking it's time for that bold strategy meme. He might have earned some extra props from United fans because there are no Liverpool players for the first time since 1986, but then I look at the Liverpool squad, and there really is no player that could have realistically been selected.

I guess only time will tell. Best of luck to them. I can't help feeling it will end up being same old England, once they face a half-decent team, they will get exposed.

Game on: 1-1, 87th minute vs Germany, you need to progress the ball and get a goal.

Who do you look to? Your midfield 3 is tiring and none of them can really pass even at their best. Who will pick the lock: Deccers? Bellingham? Eze? Morgan Rogers? All hard charging buffaloes of players, none of them with guile or passing creativity.

You go on the bench… hm.. Dan Burn. Tino Livramento. Djed Spence. No no no.

I’ve got it: Noni Madueke!

Palmer is a one-season wonder, pretty much. I would have complained if he were selected. (y)

*This was a joke btw. I'm not in the one-season-wonder camp.

I like the cut of his jib. Of course, he's not going to make everybody happy. I think the player I have a bit of a problem with would be Maguire, since it's my Man Utd views. I know, he's slow, he's past his prime, but I still think there is something to offer. Perhaps in the group stage, and maybe if you get a corner for him to put his head on.
Who would you guys have selected? I'd say Gibbs was done dirty, maybe.

Mate, I don't know. I'm just typing for the sake of it.

I would have picked Maguire over Burn. Saka and Rice feeding balls to Maguire’s big slabhead seems like a cheat code to me.

I can understand Harry Maguire being upset, but then I hear Tommy Tuchel talking about brotherhood, so maybe leaks and stuff a day before the squad is announced tells me something.
