It's strawberries and cream time once again!

All WTA Wimbledon discussion (singles and doubles) Qualies, Tournie play and post-Wimbledon is welcome in this thread.

A link to the main tournament draw will be posted here as soon as it becomes available, as well as a poll to predict the singles winner.

May the upsets from the F.O. carry over to Wimbledon. :)

With Eala knocking out 2022 Wimbie champ Rybakina just now in Berlin the Wimbie playing field
could be evening out even more. Probably the biggest win in Eala's career.
 
I think it's great that suddenly, almost overnight we have 'newbies'
such as Eala and Chwalińska vying for a very legit chance at the title.
I'd really like to see a first-time Wimbie winner step up to the plate this year.
 
It be a great store for Eala to make a deep run. I really don't think she can make it best the quarters.
Another wild card is if Serena plays singles. Not sure if she is even in singles shapes. But could totally be a wrecking ball
on the singles draw in which ever half she be in.

Yep, very interesting that they have chosen to still have that one wildcard left. I personally think Venus is more likely to get it for one final shot but Serena could be a chance. I think she’s just there for the doubles with Venus and they’ve already got that WC but let’s see! If Serena has been grinding hard I’m never going to discount her, especially given some results on tour of late. Nobody is looking dominant, Sabalenka is always going deep but loses, Swiatek, Gauff and Rybakina decide to show up when they want. JPeg is like Sabs, usually deep but never gets the reward. Andreeva off the back of RG is one to watch, yet to see her on grass this year but a QFist last year.

Yet again, hard to predict this one.

Chwalinska's game probably won't work well on grass, but we shall see.

Serena has her powerful serve, but movement is key on grass, and any good player can beat her at her current age by making her run the whole match. Her last Wimbledon match was a first-round loss to outside-the-top-100 Harmony Tan. The last time Serena had a win against a top-10 player on grass was against #4 Kerber 10 years ago.

Christ. For a woman who is dominant that’s such an embarrassing stat. Not even Safina had that happen. Sabs needs to freaking strike back and win this Wimbledon. Anything less than a victory is an embarrassment. And that’s not mentioning defending champ Swiatek who’s having a terrible year. And Gauff.

Watch someone like Noskova go and win it all but.. (no shade) but see it happening.

I have zero faith in her anymore in big matches

I won't read too much into a trivia stat.
A loss is a loss, how much it matter whether 3rd set is 6-0 or 7-6 loss
Sabalenka will have those meltdowns along with her explosive runs. That much is given

It’s hard to not read into it. Sabalenka started the year blistering. She won Brisbane, she blitzed to the Aus Open final not dropping a set en route but lost to a better Rybakina on the day, she then does the very rare sunshine double winning Indian Wells and Miami with wins over players like: Osaka, Mboko, Noskova, Rybakina x2(!) avenging the AO final loss) and Gauff.

Suddenly.
Madrid QF - mammoth choke to Baptiste. Someone she easily beat in Miami. Blows 6 match points to a much lower ranked player.
Rome 3R - again a choke to lower ranked Cirstea. Led a set and break but loses in 3.
French Open QF - another massive choke, this time Shnaider. Led 6-3 4-1 and 6-3 5-3. Loses in 3 sets WITH a bagel in the 3rd set.
Berlin SF - yet again, loses a 3 setter and guess what, a bagel in the 3rd set.

That’s our #1. Who started the year very well and is now bagelled in back to back matches and since winning the sunshine double hasn’t won a title or made a final. That’s not a trivia stat, it’s so much more.

I don’t see her having an explosive run this Wimbledon. I expect yet another QF or SF implosion. Which hey not bad financially but for someone who as I said, should have at least 8-10 slams given the draws and players faced and fact she led by sets and breaks in those slam finals… 4 isn’t good.

Swiatek could jump to 7 here and she’s 3 years younger. Krejcikova or Rybakina could get to 3 slams and be just one behind Sabalenka. Crazy.

I predict Serena will win one match against a starstruck nobody and then withdraw when she realises she has a top drawer player in round 2.

"Err yeah, bit of a tight muscle. Don't want to jeopardise the doubles. I proved I can still mix it though with that win on Monday. It's a shame actually because I quite fancied going all the way".
 
I just watched (on a stream) Esther Adeshina win the first round of women's qualies. She has maybe the worst game I have ever seen, loopy topspin up the middle and slice up the middle about 90% of the time.
But at 514 in the world she just beat the 108th ranked player and is in the 2nd round.
Funny old game.
 
In a weird twist of events, here we are almost seven years after Andreescu defeated Serena in her last slam final (2019 U.S. Open), with Serena receiving a wild card for the tournament and Andreescu having to slug it out in the qualies. :)
 
Well one’s a 7x Wimbledon champ and the other has never gone past the 3R and lost in qualifying at the French Open a month ago.

Given Bianca’s results of late, we aren’t likely to see her in the main draw winning matches.
 
Serena in the draw for both doubles AND singles is a bit much.

And I can't see any good outcome for fans of the sport: if she sucks, it'll just be a sad sight, but if she manages to go far in the tournament, the "WTA sucks" argument will be inevitably reignited. It just looks like another publicity stunt, much like the Sabalenka-Kyrgios exhibition. It would be tragic to see tennis follow the Jake Paul path.

As usual, only the people making money off of this will be entirely satisfied.
 
Some picks from the qualies so far:
- Courtesan & part time-tennis player Mademoiselle Dodin victorious against Pigossi. Hoping for a performance with more endurance on 2nd round as was the case in Roland Garros... :rolleyes:
- Linda Fruhvirtova exprienced a humiliating defeat in the hands of long time junior nr.1 Aussie Emerson Jones (2-6, 1-6) (Jones was junior nr.1 for considerably long time even though she was not even close of winning any of the Slams)
- Potentially high quality match between two Swiss players: in-form & good on grass Masarova vs FO-success Teichmann (Teichmann took the 1st after tie-break)
- Former super-junior Alina Korneeva had to play very tight 3-setter against somebody called Schubladze, but a least won in the end. (Well, compared to her junior opponent/pal Mirra, she has tend to be more furious fighter)

Reminds me of the time when Murray said the same about he only needing to play 75% got walloped and finally quit. The arrogance of someone like Murray is ridiculous. I can understand that statement from top 3 but Murray??
 
The qualifiers are clear now:
Bibi (Andreescu) dealt nicely with the challenges that Teichmann and Sasnovich were able to throw at her. Maybe at least small improvement in her level has happened.
Maria Timofeeva - nowadays representing Uzbekistan - as 1st seed through quite comfortably. Happy with that... I usually don't root for gals that look as they could be from my neighbor, but there is something (or some things) about Maria.. :giggle:
Ashley Krueger - I was surprised she had to qualify in the first place...
Alina Korneeva - Super-junior is coming with a clatter. @NaomiKonjuhPotapova I still would like to know how far you think she can go? And I'm sure there are others that would be interested in that view of yours too!??
Robin Montgomery - Fairly unknown player for me so far. I was surprised she came through.
Leonia Jeanjean - Not my favorites, I was disappointed she was able to beat Volynets at the final round.
Anastasia Gasanova - Surprise for me that she was able to qualify.
Claire Liu - No surprise here as she is good on grass.
Tyra Caterina Grant - Breakthru to WTA-tour is starting to be reality. However she had luck with the draw.
Mananchaya Sawangkaew - Managed to beat (nowadays) plastic sex doll Dodin, for which I'm eternally angry at her! :laughing:
Lina Gjorcheska - I have no idea how she managed to beat Bronzetti. (Or practically anybody in those qualies :rolleyes: )
Polina Kudermetova - "Princess of the roses" was awake for a change. Let's see how long that will last...
Mariam Bolkvadze - Nice surprise. Saw her in Fed Cup (2020) and there she seemed a very likeable person (and easy on the eyes too :giggle: )
Iryna Shymanovich - I remember the name but not the player.
Kayla Day - I didn't believe she could get through.
Teodora Kostovic - Despite Serb-gal's high rankings in juniors I haven't too much believed in her. This qualification- among some other recent results - makes her look far stronger I used to think... excellent wins over Sramkova & Lin Zhu.

Here is a bit of trivia: Serena is only 3-1/2 months younger than Anna Kournikova, who has been retired for 23 years.

I was quite stunned by this comment... "I have missed a whole WTA250-tournament"?!? :oops: But you are referring to s'Hertogenbosch tournament. (I remember from earlier decades Rosmalen-tournaments - both WTA and ATP - have they just changed names but are still played in the same place? )
I remembered that Montgomery had some success there, but definitely not winning. (Actually she didn't really won that... ) But yes, you are correct - no surprise in her getting through the qualies.
 
Apparently Radacanu has an injury so maybe not going to play but in the 2nd round she will play Harry Dart if both win.
