20W20 #12: 2012 2R, Rosol vs Nadal

The day Rosol sent shockwaves throughout the tennis world with the biggest upset in the Championships' history.
Nadal was looking to reach his 6th straight Wimbledon final and avenge his 2011 loss to Djokovic, and the World No.100 seemed just another easy early-round opponent in that quest. But as soon as the match started, Rosol made it abundantly clear that he was here to fight. He blasted down aces and redlined his ground game with flat, hard rockets off both wings to go up 2 sets to 1 against a sluggish Nadal. Finally in the 4th set, the champion seemed to regain his form and forced a deciding set under the lights on Centre Court.
Nadal was no stranger to battles like these - he had faced down many an inspired underdog over the years, perfecting the art of breaking the opponent's spirit. But just as order seemed to be restored, Rosol started swinging away at full strength, crashing through Nadal's defenses to break serve. The stunned commentators kept expecting him - at some point - to come back down to Earth, but the unseeded Czech continued to redline his shots at mach speed to the crowd's delight. He showed no sign of fear serving out the match, capping off a flawless last game with an ace to send the Matador of Mallorca packing, 6-7(9) 6-4 6-4 2-6 6-4.
It was an upset absolutely no one could've seen coming, and one that changed the course of tennis history itself. Nadal would not be seen playing again for the next 7 months due to a knee injury he had been dealing with throughout the match, and his grass court game had been irreparably dented. It would be 2018 before he reached another semifinal at Wimbledon.

That could be the highest peak level on grass.

Interestingly, the closure of the retractable roof took the momentum out of Nadal after he crushed the Czech in the fourth set.
Despite starting serving first, the Spaniard played a bad first game that cost him a lot, since that led Rosol to "transform" for a few minutes in that decisive set, and he had one of the unforgettable service performances that is remembered in the last times.

Nadal must hate that Wimbledon roof with a passion now, after 2 of his most famous losses under it.

Must've hurt for for the Bull, but it was a real treat for fans like me.

Insane match tbh. Just crazy scenes. Their match in 2014 was great too (had Rafa on the ropes again), but obviously not to this degree. Nadal slipped so many times and Rosol was getting netcords galore too lol

Maybe I need to watch this again but I'm pretty sure it's super overrated. Nadal made so many unforced errors and Rosol did too but because he served and hit so hard so it probably looks good in the highlights, but its ugly in the full match. (If I'm remembering correctly)

Rosol always brings his best specifically against Nadal. So annoying. The only time when Nadal beat him easy was in Paris 2015.

Now that’s toughness..

Not like the next gen guys ride the yellow school bus to the matches and wet their rainbow panties at the mere sight of Rafa walking onto the court.

Rosol knocks over Nadals bottle, Kyrgios j’s off Nadals bottle

@Cabeza del Demonio

Nothing helped Rosol at Wimbledon in 2014, including knoking over Rafa's bottle after a changeover. :-D

Fail. That would be Doohan beating Becker, the two-time defending champion, in 1987.
That was a big one too, not to mention Karlovic beating Hewitt in 2003. Ivo seemed to be the perfect type of player for Hewitt to beat - one-dimensional servebot who rushed the net every point. It defied all logic.
