On July 28, the top 8 teams determined by combined singles ranking will be in the field via direct entry.
The remaining 8 teams will be determined via wild card and announced at a later date.

Badosa and Tsitsipas not there anymore.
Draper, Zheng out too.
Errani / Vavassori and Zielinski / Hsieh, Siniakova/Arevalo the _actual_ doubles specialists are towards the end of the list.

Venus has won her doubles today at citiopen with baptiste! 6-3, 6-1 against Bouchard

Hopefully S/A and H/Z on opposite sides of the draw.
I think there's very little chance either of those teams gets a WC. USO only wants stars, no specialists allowed.I mean do you think they will turn down Venus/Opelka for either of those 2 teams?

The outrage online after all the dubs guys/gals get snubbed will be amusing. Since there were literally 2 posts here on the mixed dubs final at W, while there were 20 page threads on the initial USO announcement, I can only conclude that most on here that were "outraged" may have been exaggerating a tad(not you of course, you are the biggest dubs fan I've seen on this board - and I've been on this board 20 years)

It would be more fun if they allowed one team of doubles specialists on each side of the draw, so that we can watch them mercilessly mow down the singles stars and show the crowd what high level doubles looks like.
I mean there are like a hundred examples of singles guy entering a dubs event and moving down the dubs specialists, so I think its a bit of stretch to assume that would happen.

so these are the 8 guaranteed teams(based on singles ranking)
  • Sinner & Navarro
  • Swiatek & Rudd
  • Rybakina & Fritz
  • Anisimova & Rune
  • Paolini & Musetti
  • Pegula & Paul
  • Andreeva & Medvedev
  • Keys & Tiafoe

and here are the 8 that I predict will get a WC
Shelton & Townsend
Venus & Opelka
Raducanu & Alcaraz
Sabalenka & Dimitrov
Osaka & Kyrgios
Danilovic & Djokovic
Di Minaur & Boulter
Bencic & Zverev

In the past 25 years, on the men’s side in slams, it’s happened 3 times that the singles guys won. A period of 100 slams.

1. Bolelli / Fognini
2. NK / Kokk
3. Rinky / Kubler

The other 97% of the time, the doubles specialists took the title. And keep in mind that up to 40% of the draw is often comprised of singles guys. They’re usually purged in the first two rounds.

Is there no limit to how low the U.S. Open will stoop?
Legitimate Mixed Doubles Champions are being thrown under the bus for this Dog And Pony Show.

I watched Raducanu and Rybakina take out seeded doubles specialists today and now I realise why there's zero interest in mixed dubs. This is a good decision from the USO to try and get high-profile singles players involved.

I'm one of the disgruntled fans. Past 6-12 months TC had been a little better showing dubs on their main feed, I think ESPN even showed some slam finals if I remember correctly, and I loved that TNT allowed/negociated with TC to allow them to show French Dubs early on. I enjoyed watchind mixed, mens and womens. I felt this was creating some more interest and momentum to watching dubs.

When I go to Cincy, 1/2 the fun for me is watching Dubs. It's a great change of pace from singles and a great option in the early rounds when the bigger singles players aren't playing.

I think this US Open format is insulting to the previous dub champs. I would've been more accepting of this if 1/3 was based on singles ranking, 1/3 was based on dubs ranking and 1/3 was based on wildcards. I get the need to bring star power to get more interest in dubs.

I also think the condensed format adds insult to injury. Starting to open the door for shorter tennis formats and fear this will spread to all of dubs and result into something like this:
Day 1 and 2: Mixed Doubles Championship. Condensed draw. Two 4 game sets, if split play a
Day 2 and 3: Men's Doubles Championships. As above
Day 4 and 5: Women's Doubles Champships. As above
Then start singles draws.

Then in 5-10 years, singles will match the above.
Sure you can watch a match in a 1/2 hour, but is this tenniis?

Doubles already has two distinct formats.

The short format with no-ad and match tiebreak is typically a 1-hour match.

The long format with ad scoring and full third set is typically a 2-hour match.

The World #1 men’s doubles team has won zero of the past 5 slams. Teams built for long format rise in slams.

Just watched the highlights. Pretty well contested match. Fun to watch. Could've gone either way. Lots of exciting points.

And bolelli is one of the top doubles players now, who played a lot of dubs w fognini, before taking on Vava as his protege. I would explain #2 and #3 as a result of the playing conditions at the AO.

I've never heard of the two "specialists" they beat... and I probably watch more dubs than anyone, except for trav, but probably the most women's dubs.

For the USO, out of the singles players, I think Shelton will do the best, primarily due to his partner, who is arguably the best female dubs player at the moment (Townsend).
