3 Qualifiers into R16

Otte facing Berrettini (winnable after 5 set match with Ivashka)
Gojowczyk facing Alcaraz (winnable after 5 set emotional career defining victory at 18)
Zandschulp facing Schwartzman (meh?)

Point being none of these guys facing heavy odds in their 4th round matches. Brooksby as a WC likely destroyed by Novak. Gojowczyk faced a fellow Qualifier in the 3rd round.

It would be a Slam record if all three made it into Quarters and actually both Zandschulp & Gojowczyk would be in same Semifinal with Gojo having Winner of Felix/Tiafoe.

Interesting times. Dewulf is the only male Qualifier to make a Slam SF.
Karatsev literally just did this at the Australian Open earlier this year.

Otte and Van de Zandschulp are interesting mid-career guys that could get a Karatsev-ian boost to their careers. Maybe get a year or three playing some ATP level play instead of toiling in the minors. That would be pretty cool. Gojowczyk has already had his time in the sun and, frankly at 32, I think it would be horrifying if he advanced any further lmao. Especially given his opponent.

Corrected, my bad.

But what do you think of multiple Qs making Slam QF?
Want to correct the “first SFist from qualies”, too? Teenager JMac made Wimby’77 SFs from qualies. The same year there had been an Aussie qualifier who made AO SFs a few months later in the second of 2 AOs that calendar year.. His name, Bob Giltinan, isn’t JMac famous though. Then, three years after Dewulf at RG’97 there was Voltchkov at Wimby’00.

Quantity of Qs this year shows there was a way to get ready for slams even though the amount of Challengers scheduled is way down due to pandemic related cash flow issues.

I get Dewulf because of the French. He got QFs next year and then dropped off the map. Probably why I remember him. I'm just gonna stop trying now.

Don’t be upset. We’re just being encyclopedic nerds who wouldn’t have had the grey matter exercised without your catalyst post.

I remember JMac because in 1977 I lived about 10 miles from his neighborhood in Queens and even closer to where he learned tennis from Harry Hopman. Good times!

The bookies say otherwise. All of them are at least 5:1 underdogs... those are pretty heavy odds to me.

That's just betting volume. Gojowczyk is definitely not that unlikely to beat the 18 year old while Schwartzman has been losing early on hard court.

Gojo came close, up 2-1 but body gave out. I think Otte has a decent chance against a lethargic Mateo.

Otte would join van de Zandschulp as the two qualifiers in the Quarters if he wins tomorrow but I think Botic will be the only qualifier since Berrettini is the likely winner tomorrow.
