Huge Rafa fan here. Already moved on from his USO win.

Very happy.

And i'm quite sure he will keep pushing until at least 35-36.

But a part of me keeps asking itself how did he do it ?

How do the Big 3 keep winning at their advanced age while past Open Era greats couldn't produce ?

How do they keep covering the court at blistering pace for hours and hours, 4 days out of a week, 7 days out of a fortnight, all year round, like a 20 year old would ?

Is there something going on behind the scene we aren't privy on ?

When I started posting in this forum, I predicted that Federer's last chance to win a Major was Wimbledon 2019 (we already know how close he was to winning it) and that Nadal would have his chances until RG 2021 when the Spaniard turns 35 and he could become the oldest player in history to win the tournament, where he could beat his compatriot Andrés Gimeno's record).
The season is almost over and I remain more firmly in my forecast.
I think Federer could reach a last semifinal of GS but that would be all. 2020 will practically be his farewell.
And regarding Nadal, I think he will play until RG 2022, (it is the par excellence tournament where he should retire) but his chances of winning a Major would be practically void and I think that after he turns 36 he will be his final decline and it won't be worth dragging down the tennis courts. His pride would not allow it.
Then, Nadal has 6 realistic chances of winning a pair of Majors more to beat Federer's record.
Can the Spaniard achieve it?

That's actually a great choice of .gif because McEnroe never won another major after playing one of the greatest single seasons in tennis history (1984).

I would be shocked if Rafa is done lol. It's possible, but nah. Bull rises ;) most majors after 30 for the guy that would be burned out by 25 lol, amazing

the great us open run has been tempered by the wrist... and the shoulder. novak was possibly going to miss a few weeks or months and not be able to defend all those points.. and rafa was poised to all but guarantee another #1 status. then he plays an exhibition with his buddy fed and he's taped up and playing anyway..

Epic thread!

I love it when Rafa wins the US Open - you get bragging rights from September all the way to January when the AO is played :D then the magic wears off unfortunately because of that damn AO curse!

Damn AO curse? The guy won 4 US Opens while being worth like one. He's more than made up for the AO with Berrettinis and Youzhnys.

Took advantage of Monofed. No way in hell was Nadal ever going to beat Federer on grass with Fed being in good form. It was his peakest of peaks and he still barely won it.
At least a Prime Fed at Wimbledon even if below 2003-2007 level?

That was probably the most enjoyable Nadal hard court slam victory for me as a Fed fan.

Anyone who says it's a "weak draw" because "he only faced Cilic/Medvedev/Schwartzman/Berrettini" wasn't watching that mad level of play, especially in the Cilic match, I mean holy crap...

I didn't want Nadal to win, but I guess I've just accepted that Federer has lost his GOAT title after 10 years because of you know what. So I'm actually looking forward to next year's tennis for some reason. These are exciting times.

Nadal's level was so high he wasted a two-set lead against a first time finalist, come on. Fed looks good against mugs all the time, means diddly squat.

Still feels amazing. The more I think about it, the more I appreciate this year’s US Open actually. It has its place among the best Slams since the beggining of Nadal/Federer renovation in 2017, though haters gonna hate. The set up of Medvedev as a villain through NA hc season and their rivalry with Nadal in Toronto is just so good from story telling point. Also there were some decent and unexpected back stories such as Dimitrov’s rise from the ashes, Shapovalov’s way with Youzhny, Federer fighting with his 40-15 demons and so on.

What is all that talk about "first time finalist"? Federer in his prime actually lost a USO final to a player who was in his first slam final. Yet it wasn't even close to being the worst loss of his career.

Not to mention that Nadal and Federer won their first GS finals. We should rate Medvedev by ATGs standards if he’s so brave to make statements such as "I hope to win at least as many Slams as Djokovic".

That player already gave fedr a great scare at RG. It was still a pretty disgusting loss from Fred, and he didn't get a two set lead to waste (although was two points away). Both fedr and nadl should have won their finals in straight sets. The decider showed the difference: del Potro powered on, Medvedev tightened up. I don't think del Potro is intrinsically clutcher, but rather he had already played a big match vs Fed so had the experience (and he did tighten up in their RG semi), while it was Madlad's first.

Feels very good, though I think I kinda got over it already. The best feeling is during the tournament itself, not a few weeks after it. This last week of USO 2019 will definitely be one my best memories as a tennis fan. Cilic, Schwartszman, Berrettini and especially Medvedev all made Nadal work hard for it. I had to stay until the morning to watch the matches, was getting nervous every time. And somehow Nadal still won it all.

Also JMDP was playing quite a bit better. Although RAFA was injured, crushing him as Potro did is a great feat requiring terrific tennis. Meanwhile, Madlad struggled through the draw and kept winning by being brave and ingenious when he had to, but that isn't enough when facing the nadal. Fact: he faced set points in the first set of four consecutive matches, yet was able to avert it and snatch a tiebreak on three of those occasions.

Are you sure you're not just trolling tennis_amateur and his likes? Cilic, Schwartzman, Berrettini...

Med really upped his game in the final. During the tournament he was hitting lots of double faults, his volleys were terrible, and so on. All these problems suddenly disappeared in the final.
